"Battalion Commander, may I go see Sister Lai?"
Chang Yin nodded, but he still advised, "The farms here are different from the production teams in other places. If you want to go there, it's best to ask Tang Jianye for help."
Tang Yue raised an eyebrow. It seemed Tang Jianye's identity was quite extraordinary. Otherwise, the battalion commander wouldn't have said such a thing. Sure enough, Tang Jianye arrived again at dinner.
"I've found out, your sister Lai Xiang is..."
"I know where she is. Can I go see her?"
Tang Jianye nodded, "Okay, I'll put in a word with the farm over there tomorrow." After thinking for a moment, Tang Jianye changed his mind, "Never mind, I'll go with you tomorrow."
The next morning, Tang Jianye borrowed a car, and Tang Yue carried a lot of things. The two set off for the farm early. Along the way, the cold wind was biting, and the trees on both sides of the road were bent over by the weight of snow, creating a desolate scene.
The car bumped along the rugged, snowy road, and Tang Yue's heart grew heavier with each undulating road. She imagined Lai Xiang living in such a harsh environment, and her heart was filled with worry.
Finally, they arrived at the farm. Tang Jianye negotiated with the gatekeeper before being allowed in. After several transfers, the two arrived at the educated youth settlement of Yiwa Production Team.
Looking around, a cluster of low, mud-brick houses were scattered across the vast white snowfield, appearing particularly dilapidated. Tang Yue and Tang Jianye inquired around the educated youth settlement before finally finding the small wooden cabin where Lai Xiang lived.
The wooden house was extremely low, its roof covered with a thick layer of snow, as if it might collapse at any moment. The wooden door was half-open, and a wisp of cold wind blew through the crack.
Tang Yue gently pushed open the wooden door, and a damp, musty smell wafted out. The room was dimly lit, with only a small window. The window paper was badly torn, and the window frame was covered with frost flowers, making it almost impossible for light to pass through.
Lai Xiang was sitting on the only dilapidated wooden bed in the room, wrapped in an old cotton-padded coat with patches on it. Her face was pale and her eyes showed exhaustion.
Hearing the noise, she turned to look outside and saw Tang Yue and Tang Jianye come in. A hint of surprise flashed in her eyes, but it was quickly covered by a deep sense of helplessness.
"Sister Lai, how are you?" Tang Yue stepped forward and asked with concern.
Lai Xiang slowly stood up. She initially thought she was hallucinating from the cold, but upon hearing Xiao Yueyue's voice, she knew she wasn't dreaming. "Xiao Yueyue, what brings you here? This isn't a place for you."
“I only found out you were here yesterday because a comrade saw you near the train station. When I was in Kyoto, I went to the department store to look for you, but they said you weren’t there anymore.”
Sister Lai, are you alright?
