The three Tang brothers heard shouts and the sound of whips cracking in the distance. If it weren't for their excellent hearing, they certainly wouldn't have heard it from that distance. Knowing something was amiss, the three of them went around the guards to investigate.
The three Tang brothers held their breath, cautiously approaching the chilling sound. The night grew darker, clouds obscured the moonlight, and only occasional beams of searchlight occasionally swept across, illuminating the path ahead.
Turning a corner, the scene before them froze them in place, their blood seemingly standing on end.
In a large open area surrounded by iron netting, dozens of Chinese prisoners were chained together. They were ragged, emaciated, and covered with whip marks and bruises.
Several American soldiers, wielding whips, were lashing the prisoners with vulgar language.
"Crack!" With a sharp sound, a young Chinese soldier was lashed hard across the back by a leather whip, his skin torn open and blood staining his tattered clothes.
He groaned in pain, but forced himself not to open his mouth, clenching his teeth tightly, refusing to yield to the American soldiers despite being covered in wounds.
"You're really stubborn. Let's see how long you can hold out. Haha!" A burly American soldier grinned maliciously, raising his whip again and lashing it hard across the soldier's face. "Today I'll show you what happens when you resist the American army!"
Another older prisoner tried to stand up to block his companion, but was kicked to the ground by a U.S. soldier.
"Old man, still want to show your skills?"
The American soldier glared at him fiercely, "Then let me show you something even more amazing!"
As he spoke, he picked up a burning stick and pressed it against the prisoner's arm. The smell of burning flesh mingled with the prisoner's broken groans as he endured the pain, intensely stimulating everyone's senses.
It seems the US military has done this more than once; their practiced ease shows how professional and efficient they are.
The three Tang brothers clenched their fists, their eyes burning with fury. Tang Nan tried to step forward but was forcefully pulled back by Tang Dong. Tang Nan didn't turn around, nor did he take another step forward.
They suppressed the urge to rush out and continued to observe. Despite the inhumane treatment being suffered by the Chinese prisoners, not one of them yielded. The three Tang brothers were proud of them. This was the spirit of the Chinese army.
They knew that the reason they endured these humiliations without ending their lives was because they still firmly believed that China would one day be victorious. They believed that China's glory would eventually shine upon them.
Tang Bei and his two companions thought that if they were ever captured, they would likely end up like these people. At the same time, a sudden realization struck them: No! They had to become stronger, stronger so that no one could defeat them, and they would never be captured by the American army.
The group remained silent, but their resolve only grew stronger.
The group looked around the entire open space and noticed a figure in a corner—a gaunt old man with gray hair, a hunched back, and eyes that revealed a stubbornness and unyielding spirit.
Several American soldiers surrounded the old man, their faces filled with mockery and provocation. "You stubborn old man, still not ready to cooperate?" one of the soldiers grabbed the old man's hair and said menacingly, "Don't think we won't touch you. Today we'll show you that here, we are the ones in charge!"
As he spoke, he picked up a glass of cold water and splashed it on the old man's face.
The old man was soaking wet, yet he remained silent, biting his lip tightly. Seeing this, the American soldiers grew even more enraged and began punching and kicking him. Strangely, however, although their attacks were brutal, they deliberately avoided the old man's vital organs, clearly not wanting him to die so easily.
Perhaps because such incidents had been frequent lately, the old man remained unmoved. His expression further provoked the American soldiers. One of them grinned maliciously.
“Old man, you’re really stubborn. I don’t know, hahaha…” As he spoke, he began to unbuckle his belt, and soon, yellow liquid poured down from the old man’s head. As the filthy urine poured down from the old man’s head, the unrestrained laughter of the American soldiers pierced the eardrums of the three Tang brothers like sharp thorns.
Tang Bei's hands, veins bulging, gripped the wall tightly, his knuckles white from the force; Tang Nan trembled violently, a suppressed growl escaping his throat; Tang Dong's eyes were red-rimmed, his teeth grinding together.
The three brothers' pent-up anger erupted like a volcano.
"Damn it!" Tang Nan roared softly, then suddenly jumped out of his hiding place, pulled out the pistol from his waist, and charged towards the American soldiers.
Tang Bei and Tang Dong reacted almost simultaneously and rushed forward as well, their eyes filled with a murderous intent that disregarded everything.
Just when things were at their most critical, the old man, who had been keeping his head down, suddenly raised his head, his cloudy but sharp eyes looking straight at the direction where Tang Bei and the other two were hiding.
His chapped lips moved slightly, and he gently shook his head at them. The movement was weak, but it seemed to have an invisible force that made the three Tang brothers freeze in place the moment they took a step.
Tang Bei was breathing rapidly, his chest heaving violently, and large beads of sweat slid down his cheeks.
Looking into the old man's bloodshot yet resolute eyes, he seemed to understand the deep meaning in those eyes in that instant—impulsiveness would only bring more sacrifices, and acting rashly at this moment would not only fail to save everyone, but would also plunge everyone into a desperate situation.
Tang Nan's hand, still trembling as he held the pistol, could no longer move forward. The consequences of his impulsive actions were immeasurable. They couldn't protect so many Chinese prisoners of war.
