Old Li waved his hand, "Don't worry, just give me a few invisibility talismans, and even if Xixi and I stay at home, no one will be able to find us."
Lin Cuicui thought about it and agreed. Then her eyes turned cold. "I don't know which country Wei Xin works for, but I think she's been a bit anxious lately. She used to hang around our house quite often."
Old Li knew this too, but he didn't think much of it at first. But after meeting him today, he realized that this man really had a gloomy mind.
"We need to pass this message on to Commander Kang so that they can make arrangements."
Lin Cuicui nodded, but she couldn't go out. She'd see what happened tonight. There should be some activity from the military.
Wei Xin returned in a good mood. After lying in wait for so long, she finally had a chance to be of use. Wei Xin wanted to get the message out as soon as possible. She quickly ate a quick meal, then left the army base with a basket slung over her shoulder.
The midday sun was exceptionally scorching, but Wei Xin felt a gentle breeze on her face, which was very refreshing.
She draped the washed blue cloth shirt over the bamboo basket and walked seemingly casually toward the supply and marketing cooperative on the outskirts of the city. A secret report transcribed the previous night was hidden in a lining at the bottom of the basket; every word recorded the movements of Lin Cuicui's family.
Weaving through the bustling crowd, Wei Xin stopped under the willow tree at the entrance of the supply and marketing cooperative. She reached out to tidy her wind-blown hair, but actually she was observing her surroundings—an old man selling popsicles was dozing in the shade, and a peddler pushing his bicycle passed by humming a tune. Everything seemed ordinary, yet it made her heart race.
After walking another half mile along the bluestone path, under the old locust tree at the corner, there was a worn-out wicker basket with half a piece of brown sugar pressed down on the rim—this was the signal for the agreement.
Wei Xin's heart raced slightly. She bent down and pretended to wipe her shoes. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a man wearing a straw hat dozing against a tree trunk in the shadows. His toes tapped the ground unconsciously, the rhythm matching their agreed-upon code.
Wei Xin took a deep breath, gently placed the bamboo basket next to the wicker basket, took out a blue cloth shirt from the basket, and seemingly casually unfolded it, but quickly tied a double knot at the corner of the shirt - signifying "important intelligence has been delivered".
As she stood up, she deliberately staggered, reached out to steady herself against the old locust tree, and tapped the bark three times quickly with her fingertips—asking if she had received the message.
The man in the shadows of the trees still had his eyes closed, but the straw sandal on his right foot drew a crooked arc on the ground. Wei Xin instantly understood that he was telling her to walk towards the moat.
She forced herself to remain calm, dusted herself off, and walked in the designated direction, each step extremely slow and steady, as if she were just an ordinary woman taking a stroll.
Under the willows by the moat, Wei Xin stopped, took a withered leaf from her sleeve, and watched it slowly drift into the water. The leaf swirled downstream, and just as it drifted half a meter away, a wooden mallet used for washing clothes on the opposite bank suddenly slammed heavily onto the stone slab—thump, thump, thump—three sounds, the signal for a rendezvous.
She gripped her skirt tightly, watching the woman washing clothes on the opposite bank raise her wooden mallet high and then slam it down, the splashing water drawing seven tiny arcs in the sunlight. With each strike of the mallet, Wei Xin understood the meaning of the new instruction.
