Tang Yue suddenly stopped, her brows furrowed, and her nostrils flared as she tried to discern the unusual smell.
The smell was peculiar and difficult to describe accurately. It was neither the damp, rotten smell that usually lingered in the passage, nor the metallic scent of gold bricks, but rather a pungent odor mixed with putridity, blood, and some kind of chemical agent, making one want to vomit.
A strong thought surged in Tang Yue's mind; the scent made her instinctively feel her heart clench.
Her mind involuntarily drifted back to the words Miyazaki Kaze had spoken: "Those who are alive but unable to work? They are the masters of the morgue. They will die there sooner or later."
"The smell? Don't worry. Japan has the world's best germ research experts who can control those corpses from rotting and smelling bad."
Could it be that we're very close to the morgue? Tang Yue's heart suddenly raced, and her hand unconsciously tightened its grip on the weapon, as if she could break it if she used just a little more force.
The passageway was silent, save for her slightly rapid breathing echoing in the empty space. She moved forward slowly, each step deliberate, her eyes fixed on the front, not missing a single subtle sound.
At this moment, she was like a cheetah in a dark jungle, ready to attack its surroundings at any moment. It seemed that only in this way could she vent the anger in her heart.
Tang Yue took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. With her keen senses, she began to carefully observe her surroundings.
The water stains on the walls of the passageway worsened, and moss spread rampantly, shimmering eerily in the dim light. The floor also became increasingly slippery, requiring Tang Yue to be extra careful with every step.
As she continued on her way, she noticed some strange marks. There were several deep scratches on the wall, as if they had been made by some sharp object; the length and depth of the scratches were chilling.
Scattered on the ground were fragments of old clothing. Tang Yue picked up one; the bloodstains on it had long since dried, turning a dark red, as if telling a story of past misery. Looking at these marks, Tang Yue knew that the morgue was not far away.
However, with each step he took, his steps grew heavier and heavier.
Continuing forward, the passage came to a fork in the road. Tang Yue stood at the crossroads, her eyes closed. She didn't use her spiritual power to investigate; she couldn't bear to accept such a horrific scene.
A moment later, she opened her eyes and resolutely chose the passage on the left. This passage was even narrower, the walls almost touching her body, and the oppressive atmosphere made it hard for her to breathe.
During her journey, Tang Yue encountered some small traps. Occasionally, there were hidden pits on the ground, their entrances covered by a thin layer of wooden planks, which were also covered with a layer of mud and moss, making them almost undetectable without careful observation.
With her agility and extensive experience, Tang Yue skillfully avoided the traps time and time again. She knew that these traps were set up by the Miyazaki family to conceal the secrets of the abandoned morgue, which meant she was getting closer and closer to her destination.
As Tang Yue ventured deeper, the strange smell grew increasingly intense, almost unbearable. She didn't try to block it out; she wanted to remember this day, this place—she never wanted to forget it.
Continuing to move forward slowly and laboriously, a huge stone gate appeared ahead, covered with strange symbols and patterns, exuding an ancient and mysterious aura.
Tang Yue didn't care what the totems on the stone gate were for; she just wanted to see what kind of inhumane treatment those people had received.
Tang Yue slowly walked to the stone door, reached out and gently pushed it. The stone door made a dull sound and slowly opened.
A strong, putrid stench hit her, and Tang Yue almost gagged. She forced herself to endure the discomfort and slowly walked into the morgue.
The morgue was dimly lit, with a few faint oil lamps flickering on the walls, their light swaying precariously as if they might go out at any moment. This contrasted with the countless yellow talismans adorning the walls.
The walls were covered in water stains and moss, shimmering eerily in the dim light. The floor was wet, and Tang Yue could feel the stickiness under her feet with every step she took, whether it was water or some other liquid.
A strong, stench of decay filled the air, a mixture of blood, rotting flesh, and death that nearly suffocated her. To suppress the nausea, Tang Yue had to take out a handkerchief from her storage ring and cover her mouth and nose.
She couldn't shut herself off; she had to remember, she had to remember every moment here.
Even so, the stench was still everywhere, seeping into her nasal cavity and causing her stomach to churn.
Besides the stench of decay, there was also a faint, pungent smell of disinfectant mixed in with the air. The two smells combined to create an even more eerie and unpleasant odor, as if death and struggle were intertwined.
Tang Yue's gaze slowly swept over every corner of the morgue. The scene before her made her pupils shrink instantly, and a surge of intense anger and grief welled up in her heart.
Countless corpses lay scattered haphazardly on the ground and against the walls. These corpses were in various postures, some twisted in agony, as if they had endured immense suffering before their deaths;
Some were incomplete, with limbs, heads, and bodies separated and scattered on the ground; others were highly decomposed, with the flesh beginning to peel away, revealing white bones, and maggots wriggling rampant in the rotting flesh, making them unbearable to look at.
In a corner, Tang Yue saw a corpse. The deceased's hands were tightly bound behind his back, the rope digging deep into his flesh, leaving bloody marks. His eyes were wide open, his face still bearing the expression of pain and fear, and his mouth was agape, as if he were uttering a desperate cry before he died.
