Tang Nan shuddered, nearly tripping over the rubble—his sister's consciousness was like a ray of warm light, piercing through the despair brought by the downpour.
Meanwhile, at the foot of the cliff in the valley, Tang Bei and Tang Dong had completed the setup of the vine traps. Three-meter-thick vine nets were fixed among the ancient trees above the mountain path, and the soaked hemp ropes swayed slightly in the wind.
"Big brother, why are there so many gunshots over there? Will second brother be alright?" Tang Dong stared at the direction of the billowing smoke, his fingers unconsciously rubbing the bomb at his waist.
Tang Bei drove the last iron nail into the tree trunk and said in a deep voice, "He seems unreliable most of the time, but he's incredibly clever when things get serious. If he can't beat you, he'll definitely know to run away, so don't worry!"
Although Tang Bei said that, it was impossible for him not to worry. However, Dongzi was still young, and no matter how smart he was, he was not mature enough. He couldn't worry about that, as he couldn't handle things here yet.
"Once the US military escort team arrives, we will..."
Before Tang Bei could finish speaking, the roar of an engine suddenly came from afar. A military jeep burst through the rain, its roof-mounted heavy machine gun gleaming coldly.
"Damn it, US reinforcements have arrived!" Tang Bei's pupils shrank sharply. "Dongzi, detonate the bomb and disrupt their formation!" Tang Dong immediately lit the fuse and threw the bomb with all his might toward the jeep's likely path.
"Boom!" The explosion shook the mountainside, shrapnel tore through the rain, and the jeep veered and crashed into the roadside ditch.
However, before the smoke had cleared, more American soldiers poured out of the woods behind them, raining bullets down on the cliff like swarms of locusts. Tang Bei and Tang Dong were forced to take cover in a crevice, watching their carefully laid vine net teeter precariously amidst the hail of bullets.
Bullets rained down on the area around the crevice, sending shards of rock flying. Tang Bei and Tang Dong huddled in the narrow crevice, barely daring to breathe. Tang Dong looked at the riddled vine netting, his voice trembling slightly, "Brother, the trap isn't holding up. There are too many American soldiers. Let's retreat!"
Tang Bei's face was ashen. He gripped the rifle he had captured from the U.S. army tightly, his eyes fixed on the approaching U.S. soldiers.
"Don't panic!" They don't know the situation on Ernan's side yet. If they retreat now, and if the situation on Ernan isn't over yet, and the US troops come to their aid, Ernan will be in grave danger. He absolutely cannot allow that to happen.
Tang Bei took a deep breath and tried to calm himself down. "We'll use the crevices in the rocks as cover, fire a shot and move on. We can't let them figure out our location."
As soon as he finished speaking, Tang Bei leaned out and fired a shot at the American soldiers, one of whom fell to the ground. The other American soldiers immediately opened fire wildly in the direction from which the gunshot came. Tang Bei quickly retreated into the crevice in the rocks, a bullet grazing his scalp and causing a burning pain.
Tang Dong was just asking his older brother a question, making conversation out of nothing. Even if Tang Bei told him to leave now, he wouldn't. He didn't know the situation upstairs, and he didn't know how Er Nan was doing.
Furthermore, judging from the gunfire and explosions above, reinforcements may have already arrived nearby. Therefore, they absolutely cannot leave. Keep these American troops here; once the situation above is resolved, reinforcements will naturally come to their aid.
He seized the opportunity and threw a homemade bomb. "Boom!" The bomb exploded in the middle of the American troops, instantly killing several soldiers. However, the American firepower was too intense, and they quickly adjusted their tactics, splitting into several small teams to flank them from different directions.
"Dongzi, they're surrounding us!" Tang Bei cried anxiously as the American troops drew closer. It was just him and Dongzi now; he couldn't let anything happen to Dongzi. His mother was waiting for them at home.
He looked around and spotted a narrow mountain path behind the crevice. Although steep and difficult to traverse, it might be their only chance to break through. "Let's retreat to the path behind and fight them there!"
The two men carefully crawled out from the cracks in the rocks and retreated quickly along the mountain path. American soldiers spotted them and immediately gave chase, bullets whizzing behind them. Tang Dong suddenly stopped, turned, and threw another bomb at the pursuing Americans, successfully halting their pursuit.
But this was only temporary, as more American soldiers surged forward. Tang Bei and Tang Dong had retreated to the end of the mountain path, with a steep cliff behind them. By this time, they were running low on ammunition and their strength was nearing its limit.
"Brother, it seems we're going to die here today." Tang Dong looked at the densely packed American soldiers before him and said with a bitter smile. Tang Bei, however, clenched his fists, his eyes still filled with determination: "We will never give up until the very last moment! Even if we die, we'll take a few of them down with us!"
Moreover, this wasn't the most critical moment yet. Even if things really did turn out badly, they still had a lifeline. The two were actually calmer than before.
Just as they were preparing for a final stand against the American army, suddenly, a familiar shout came from afar...
On the other side, Tang Nan was forced into a mountain ravine by the American troops. Five soldiers surrounded him in a semi-circle, and the squad leader grinned and raised his gun: "Little brat, try to run?" Tang Nan wiped the blood from his face and suddenly threw the homemade gun in his hand high into the air.
The moment the American soldier instinctively looked up, he suddenly ripped open his shirt—and three hand grenades strapped to his waist were clearly visible!
"Back off if you want to live!" Tang Nan's roar, like a thunderclap, rang out as his finger tightened on the pin. The American soldiers' expressions changed drastically. The squad leader gritted his teeth and took two steps back, still pointing his gun at him: "You dare! This old man will die with you!"
Just as tensions were rising, a sharp whooshing sound suddenly rang out from the sky. A burning arrow pierced through the rain and struck the American squad leader's helmet with pinpoint accuracy.
