Chapter 279 Kumārajīva Arrives

Upon hearing Xuan Ci's refusal, Wang Yang didn't say anything more.

He knew very well that the Tibetan monk Xuanci mentioned was most likely Kumārajīva.

However, in the original story, Kumārajīva went to Tianlong Temple in Dali.

He used his Xiaowuxiang Gong (a type of martial art) to impersonate the 72 Shaolin skills.

All for that was the Six Meridians Divine Sword.

"Kumārajīva came to Shaolin Temple on Mount Song, probably for the Seventy-Two Arts of Shaolin and the Yi Jin Jing."

Just as Wang Yang was lost in thought, Xuan Ci smiled slightly and said:

"Benefactor Wang, please come in!"

After regaining his senses, Wang Yang, led by Xuan Ci, arrived at the main hall of the temple.

As soon as they were seated, Xuanci instructed the monks to serve tea to Wang Yang and the others.

After chatting for a while, Wang Yang prepared to ask Ye Erniang about her relationship with Qiao Feng.

He had a chance encounter with Ren Yingying outside Hangzhou earlier.

At that time, Ren Yingying was being harassed and teased by Yun Zhonghe, one of the Four Evils.

Ye Erniang and Yue Laosan stood by to keep watch.

Wang Yang's men killed Yun Zhonghe and also defeated Ye Erniang and Yue Laosan.

After that, Yue Laosan chose to follow Wang Yang.

Ye Erniang learned from Wang Yang that her son was still alive and was at Shaolin Temple on Mount Song.

Upon learning this news, Ye Erniang immediately rushed to Shaolin Temple.

Prior to that, Qiao Feng was framed by Kang Min and others in Xingzilin.

Fortunately, Wang Yang appeared and revealed the truth to the public.

In addition, Wang Yang also told Qiao Feng.

His father, Xiao Yuanshan, did not die, but was hiding in the Sutra Repository of Shaolin Temple.

After learning of this, Qiao Feng bid farewell to Wang Yang and also came to Shaolin.

Just as Wang Yang was about to ask a question, a hurried footstep suddenly came from outside the hall.

Looking in the direction of the sound, they saw a monk running in with a panicked expression.

"Abbot! The Tibetan monks have arrived!"

The monk looked at Abbot Xuanci with a worried expression and said.

"Um?"

Upon hearing the monk's words, Xuan Ci's brows furrowed and his expression turned grim.

Earlier, Kumārajīva had submitted a letter written in Sanskrit to the Shaolin Temple.

The letter was very simple; it simply stated that the person wanted to visit Shaolin Temple to exchange ideas on Buddhism.

But Xuanci and the others knew very well what was going on.

This Tibetan national teacher, Kumārajīva, probably has ulterior motives.

"Abbot, why don't we just send him away?"

Master Xuanku said in a deep voice, "I really don't want to receive this Tibetan monk from Tibet."

Xuan Ci glanced at himself slightly and replied:

"Guests from afar are welcome; how can we turn them away?"

As she spoke, Xuan Ci sighed softly, then looked at Wang Yang:

"Alliance Leader Wang, please enjoy your tea for now. I will go out to greet the Tibetan National Preceptor."

Wang Yang smiled slightly, nodded, and replied, "Okay."

Then, Xuan Ci didn't linger and led Master Xuan Ku and the others straight out.

Not long after, a commotion was heard outside the hall.

Upon closer inspection, one could see Master Xuanci leading a dignified-looking middle-aged monk into the hall.

Seeing this, everyone stared intently.

The middle-aged monk was dressed in a yellow robe and appeared to be under fifty years old.

He was dressed in cloth clothes and straw sandals, his face was radiant, and there seemed to be a faint glow of precious light flowing from it.

It is like a bright jewel, naturally shining.

A brief glance is enough to inspire admiration and a sense of closeness.

After seeing the monk, Wang Yang glanced at him and muttered to himself:

"It really is Kumārajīva!"

Wang Yang easily deduced from the monk's attire.

The newcomer was none other than the Tibetan National Preceptor, Kumārajīva.

Just as everyone was sizing up Kumārajīva, Kumārajīva also glanced at Wang Yang and the others.

Then, he put his hands together, smiled, and said:

"Abbot Xuanci, your temple has so many guests present today!"

"I am a humble monk who has come here unexpectedly. I hope the abbot will not be offended."

Upon hearing this, Xuan Ci smiled slightly and replied:

"It is truly a fortunate occasion that the Imperial Preceptor has come from afar to the East. Since we are fellow Buddhists, please do not disturb us."

"Please take a seat!"

With that, Abbot Xuanci invited Kumārajīva to take a seat.

Kumārajīva bowed slightly, showing a touch of humility, and then sat down in an empty seat.

After Kumārajīva took his seat, Master Xuanku frowned slightly and asked:

"Why has the Imperial Preceptor traveled so far to Shaolin Temple? What is his true intention?"

"Um?"

Upon hearing Master Xuanku's question, Kumārajīva was slightly surprised, then smiled and said:

"Didn't this humble monk already send over a visiting card?"

"We are all Buddhists, and I have come here to exchange Buddhist teachings."

Master Xuanku was taken aback and speechless at what Kumārajīva said.

At this moment, Xuan Ci smiled slightly and said:

"How does the Imperial Preceptor wish to exchange teachings?"

Kumārajīva smiled calmly, glanced meaningfully at Xuanci, and said:

"Abbot, what are your thoughts on the three great vows of Buddhism?"

"Um?"

Xuan Ci frowned.

Before he could even reply, Master Xuanbei suddenly spoke up:

"To save all sentient beings, to have great compassion and mercy, and to relieve all suffering in the world—these three great vows are what Buddhists pursue throughout their lives."

At this point, Master Xuanbei paused and asked in return:

Why does the Great Wheel King ask this question?

Kumārajīva smiled calmly and said:

"I believe there is one more vow in addition to the three great vows."

"That is to liberate all beings from suffering with great compassion."

"This is the vow to sever endless afflictions!"

Upon hearing Kumārajīva's words, Abbot Xuanci narrowed his eyes slightly, a strange light flashing across his gaze.

Then, he smiled and said:

"Eliminating endless afflictions, including greed, anger, and ignorance, is to purify the minds of all beings."

"The fact that the National Preceptor has such a grand aspiration demonstrates his compassion and pursuit of Buddhism and Taoism."

...

Next, Kumārajīva continued to exchange Buddhist teachings with Abbot Xuanci and other eminent Shaolin monks.

Upon hearing this, Zhao Min and the others also admired the Tibetan monk, Kumārajīva.

He single-handedly debated Buddhist teachings with a group of Shaolin monks and held his own in the slightest.

There was even a subtle tendency for them to suppress the Shaolin monks.

Seeing this, Wang Yang gave a cold, indifferent smile.

Others might not know this, but he knew it very well.

When Kumārajīva came to Shaolin, he ostensibly came to exchange Buddhist teachings.

But in reality, they came for the 72 Shaolin arts and the Yi Jin Jing.

Right now, in the hall, the pretentious debate between Abbot Xuanci and others was something Wang Yang scoffed at.

Just as Wang Yang had expected.

After this exchange of Buddhist teachings, Kumārajīva gradually revealed his purpose.

"Abbot Xuanci, what do you think of the Seventy-Two Shaolin Arts?"

Upon hearing Kumārajīva's question, Xuanci felt a chill run down his spine.

He had long found it strange that Kumārajīva had traveled so far to Shaolin Temple to exchange Buddhist teachings. What was his purpose?

"He's after the Seventy-Two Shaolin Arts?"

Xuan Ci muttered something under his breath, but outwardly responded with a smile:

"The seventy-two Shaolin arts are all extremely powerful."

"Otherwise, it wouldn't be called a unique skill."

Kumārajīva smiled calmly and said:

"Does Abbot Xuanci think there is anyone in this world who can master all seventy-two Shaolin arts?"
