Chapter 999 You're a policeman, I'm not; you protect the people, I'll protect you.

Meanwhile, inside the East Tower.

The power system seemed to have received a friendly greeting from the explosion, and the lights flickered on and off like a disco, creating a cheap horror movie atmosphere.

The piercing alarm sounded like a dutiful banshee, relentlessly reminding everyone: This place has exploded! Run!

Yuzuru Hanyu and Miwako Sato, like two streaks of lightning, raced upwards along the safety passage, leaving the panicked crowd fleeing downwards behind.

"The explosion point should be near the observation deck!"

"The smoke is coming from there!"

Based on the direction and density of the smoke, Sato Miwako made a precise judgment. Her breathing was a little rapid due to the high-intensity running, but her beautiful eyes were unusually firm, burning with the flame of the pursuit of the murderer.

The two ran frantically down the dimly lit staircase filled with the acrid smell of smoke and the sound of alarms, finally reaching the floor where the explosion had occurred.

The scene before me was terrifying.

The focus of the explosion appears to be near the elevator shaft.

One of the unfortunate sightseeing elevators, having been "baptized" by the explosion at close range and experiencing a "shutdown" in its wiring, became unsightly stuck between two floors. The car was at an awkward angle, and the door was twisted like an abstract work of art, leaving only a narrow gap that could barely fit a thin person.

Even more alarming, the elevator's steel cables also appeared to have suffered internal damage.

It emitted a teeth-grinding "creaking" sound, as if saying "I'm about to collapse," and the entire carriage swayed slightly with the sound, creating a precarious and ready-to-free-falling atmosphere.

Through the gap, one could clearly see a little girl, about five or six years old, clutching a tattered rabbit doll in the corner of the elevator. She was trembling with fear, her little face covered in tears, but she dared not cry out.

"Yuko! My Yuko! Save my child!"

Outside the elevator, a young mother completely broke down, collapsing to the ground and crying out in anguish, trying to break free from the security guards' obstruction and rush toward the dangerous elevator. The scene was chaotic for a moment.

This scene, like a brutally recreated movie directed by a mediocre director, instantly and precisely struck the most painful corner of Sato Miwako's heart.

Three years ago... the Ferris wheel at Beika Department Store...

The explosion caused the control panel to malfunction, leaving the cockpit suspended in mid-air... It was also a malicious death trap set by the killer for the police...

In a daze, she seemed to see again the ghostly figure of Death, wielding a scythe and grinning maliciously, floating in mid-air, mocking her as if to say:

"See? History always repeats itself. I'm too lazy to even change the script, and you're still powerless. What an unlucky guy..."

However, Miwako Sato was only distracted for less than a second.

Her eyes instantly became incredibly sharp and resolute, and all her hesitation, fear, and past shadows were forcibly suppressed and thrown into the trash can.

She's a police officer!

Protecting the people is her sacred duty!

"Get out of the way!"

She gave a low shout, exuding an aura of authority, pushed aside the security guards who were trying to maintain order but were somewhat flustered, took a few steps back, and took a deep breath.

Then, she took a running start and jumped!

Her lithe figure drew a graceful arc in the air. She nimbly turned to the side and, using the narrow gap, daringly slid into the swaying elevator car like a fish.

"Officer Sato!"

The security guards outside and the staff who rushed over exclaimed in surprise.

Below, the people who witnessed this scene through the reporter's live broadcast also gasped in surprise.

The reporter from Mihana TV was so excited that his voice trembled: "Dear viewers! A brave policewoman has disregarded her own safety and entered the dangerous elevator car! We are witnessing a true act of heroism!"

Inside the elevator, Sato Miwako steadied herself, trying not to look down at the dizzying height beneath her feet. She softened her voice and gave the frightened little girl in the corner the gentlest smile she could muster:

"Little sister, don't be afraid, I'm a policewoman, I'm here to save you. Come here slowly, okay? I'll take you out to find your mother."

Her voice was so gentle it could melt your heart.

She was completely different from the policewoman who had exuded a powerful aura just moments before.

The little girl looked up at Sato Miwako's police uniform and her determined eyes, as if she had found a pillar of support. She nodded with a sob in her voice and moved her feet carefully.

Sato Miwako carefully carried the little girl to the elevator door crack, and with Hanyu Nan's help outside, they successfully handed the little girl out.

"Yuko!"

The mother held her daughter, whom she had lost and found again, and wept with joy.

Everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

Miwako Sato also let out a long sigh of relief, wiped the fine sweat from her forehead, and prepared to evacuate from this awful place herself, since the elevator looked like it was about to freefall at any moment.

However, just as she turned around, preparing to squeeze through the gap again—

Hidden in the shadows, listening to the live broadcast on his phone, the bomber wore a cruel yet satisfied smile.

"Now... you stupid cops... die for your so-called duty!"

He pressed the button on the remote control in his hand.

"boom!!!"

A second, more violent explosion occurred above the elevator shaft, at the location where the steel cables were secured!

The already precarious steel cable, seemingly crying for help, snapped completely with a chilling, ear-piercing sound, like a snapping string!

The elevator car, now without traction, began its freefall like a kite with a broken string, accompanied by a piercing metallic scraping sound and a desperate howl, as it began its joyful freefall towards the bottom of the dark and deep elevator shaft.
