In the evening, Su Huaiyue walked on the small path leading to the village chief's house. The bamboo forest around him made a rustling sound under the gentle breeze.
She sorted out her thoughts as she walked.
The food crisis facing the village made her feel a heavy responsibility and a sense of urgency to act quickly.
Pushing open the village chief's low wooden door, Su Huaiyue saw the village chief squatting beside the brazier, warming himself by the fire and drinking a cup of hot tea.
When the village chief saw her come in, he quickly called out, "Madam Wei, come and sit down. It's cold outside."
Su Huaiyue smiled slightly, walked over and sat down next to the brazier, and got straight to the point, "Village Chief, Wei Che and I have discussed it and we plan to go to the state to sell our village's embroidery and exchange it for some seeds to get through this difficult time."
The village chief nodded, a hint of worry on his face. "You all have good intentions, but it's not easy to go to the state, especially at this critical juncture."
Su Huaiyue understood his concerns and comforted him softly, "We will discuss with Lord Li and try to get an official to accompany us to ensure safety. Also, Wang Susu can come with us. She embroiders very well."
Wang Susu is the daughter of Wang Erjia and the most outstanding embroiderer. At the age of fifteen, she can embroider lifelike phoenixes and has become a legend in the village.
When the village chief heard Wang Susu's name, he smiled with satisfaction, "That girl is the pride of our village. With her help, everything will go smoothly."
Seeing that the village chief's attitude had softened, Su Huaiyue felt a little comforted, so she stood up and said goodbye and walked out of the village chief's house.
She was thinking about her next move in her mind, and with every step she took, she seemed to hear the bamboo leaves whispering in the wind, cheering her on for the plan she was about to unfold.
At the same time, Wei Che did not dare to slack off.
He walked into Lord Li's room.
Wei Che bowed and said, "Sir Li, we have a good plan and would like to ask for your help."
Lord Li raised his head, put down his pen for a moment, and asked calmly, "Oh? Tell me about it."
Wei Che elaborated on the idea, and Lord Li paused for a moment before saying, "That's a good idea, but as exiles, it's a little inconvenient for you to travel. How about this? I'll send a few officials to accompany you and provide assistance along the way."
Wei Che secretly breathed a sigh of relief and readily agreed, "Thank you, Lord Li. With your support, we are more confident."
Coming out of the county government, Wei Che ran into Su Huaiyue who was hurrying over. When their eyes met, they could see the expectation and sense of responsibility in each other's eyes.
"How do you think the village chief's discussions went?"
Wei Che spoke first.
"The village chief is very supportive and even praised Wang Susu. We can leave as soon as possible."
Su Huaiyue seemed full of confidence.
Wei Che nodded in approval, and the two agreed to start preparations tomorrow morning.
As night falls, the village returns to its peaceful state. Lanterns illuminate the paths.
The next morning, the sun shone through the mist onto the village path, and the air was filled with the fresh scent of earth.
Su Huaiyue and Wei Che were already prepared. They stood at the gate of the yard and looked at each other, revealing a sense of unspoken understanding and anticipation for the upcoming journey.
Just then, Wei Yunrou ran over with excitement on her face.
"Sister-in-law, brother, I also want to go to the state. I can definitely help you."
She spoke sincerely and her eyes were full of expectation.
Su Huaiyue shook her head gently, but her tone was gentle and firm, "Yun Rou, this journey has been arduous. You stay and take good care of the old lady and the others in the family, okay?"
"No, I can help!"
Wei Yunrou said unwillingly.
Wei Che couldn't resist Wei Yunrou's insistence, so he had to make three rules with her before he agreed.
The two little ones who were nagging and clamoring to follow were pulled back by the third sister-in-law, "Be good and listen. I'll take you there when I have the chance."
The fourth sister-in-law comforted him softly, "Be careful on the road."
Wei Che and Su Huaiyue felt a surge of warmth in their hearts at the same time.
"Don't worry, we will be back as soon as possible." Su Huaiyue responded with a smile.
In order to save time and have a smooth journey, Wei Che and Su Huaiyue converted the village's donkey cart into a horse carriage early on. After everything was ready, they set off with Wei Yunrou, Wang Susu and several officials.
The horses had already been harnessed. Seeing that everyone was on the carriage, Wei Che pulled the reins and the carriage drove out of the village, splashing morning dew along the way.
"Although things are a little difficult and we are not sure about the outcome when we go to Dongzhou this time, we must try our best."
Wei Che said firmly, and everyone in the car felt a sense of yearning and expectation.
Wang Susu lowered her head, holding the small handkerchief she had embroidered, and said with a smile, "I will try my best to play my role and strive for a better future for the village."
Her confidence and gentleness infected everyone in the car.
The carriage was traveling along the road in the morning light. The sound of the wind was gently humming the anticipation of an unknown journey in my ears, and elegant scenery was passing by from time to time.
Wei Che drove the carriage slowly forward. The early morning sun shone on the winding country road, adding a touch of warmth to their journey.
Su Huaiyue was sitting in the car and happened to glance out the window to see a large area of abandoned farmland.
I couldn't help but think that if this trip was successful, maybe I could do something with these lands.
She turned her head and saw Wei Che's profile as he focused on driving, and she couldn't help feeling relieved.
Although they were silent all the way, the look in their eyes seemed to reveal all their thoughts, and they had a special understanding.
Just then, a slight vomiting sound was heard from inside the car.
Wang Susu covered her mouth and her face turned pale.
Su Huaiyue quickly took out the small porcelain bottle she carried with her and comforted her softly: "Susu, open your mouth, drink some of this and you will feel better."
