Chapter 39: Young Men's Guard
In the Su family's study, candlelight flickered.
Qingning looked at Su Shengsheng speechlessly as she turned around to make the bed.
Although Tianqianguan is desolate and housing prices are relatively low, purchasing a courtyard is not easy.
In order to avoid buying in a hurry and not being able to lower the price, several families did not buy the central courtyard for the time being.
However, the old man had already spoken in the morning, and they felt embarrassed to go back to the courtyard to eat, so they just borrowed the kitchen and solved the problem themselves.
Su Shengsheng did not bring Ning Jie to the table today, but had a simple dinner in the study. After that, she exchanged residence with her two aunts Tingwan and moved into the study herself.
Of course, Ning Jie was also brought along.
Ning Yu helped clean up and said hesitantly, "Miss, why don't I stay here with you?"
Although the young man is not very old, the young lady is only five years older than him. It would be bad if the news got out.
Su Shengsheng knew that she was worried about the separation between men and women. "I have my own plans. I won't be staying here for a few days. I'll just move out after a few rooms are left."
Although Ning Yu was still hesitant after hearing this, she had no choice but to agree when she saw that Su Shengsheng had made up her mind and asked her to go into the house and bring Brother Heng to live with them.
After cleaning up, Qing Ning saw that Su Shengsheng was not paying attention to the young man, and her heart was full of doubts.
She glanced at the young man furtively, lowered her voice, and asked, "Miss, isn't it a bit inappropriate for us to treat this young master like this?"
After Su Shengsheng finished cleaning up, she sat down at the desk and drew on a piece of paper. She didn't look up when she heard this, but asked calmly, "How did you treat him?"
Qing Ning was stunned and muttered to herself: Not giving him food, ignoring him, and not talking to him, doesn't this count as not treating him well?
But she still mustered up the courage to say, "This child is quite pitiful. Doesn't the young lady want to teach him to read? She also needs to establish a good relationship with him!"
Su Shengsheng then raised her head and glanced at the silent young man, "Isn't the Duke's Mansion treating him badly?"
Qing Ning choked and was about to speak when Su Shengsheng interrupted her, "And even if I wanted to teach him now, do you think he would learn?"
Qing Ning looked at the young man. He was sent to the bookstore to study in the morning. After class, when no one came to pick him up, he kept a cold face.
Now she was treated so coldly by her own young lady, and the fierceness in her eyes became even stronger. She really didn't know what the young lady was planning.
Fortunately, Ning Yu led Brother Heng in at this time.
Su Shengsheng changed her cold attitude and pulled Brother Heng, whose face was flushed, over to warm himself by the fire.
As soon as Brother Heng entered the room, his grape-like eyes locked onto the young man.
"Sister, he's so handsome, like he walked out of a painting."
Children are always the most innocent.
What I see is never fame, wealth or power.
Su Shengsheng saw the boy move his body, so he smiled and touched Brother Heng's head, "Brother Heng, do you want to play with me?"
Brother Heng nodded repeatedly and took out a few candies from his sleeve. "This is what my sister-in-law bought for me. I want to give it to my little brother."
Su Shengsheng smiled and patted him, "Go ahead."
However, the boy not only refused to take the candy handed to him by Brother Heng, but also threw it to the ground.
He let out a wheezing roar, which scared Brother Heng so much that he burst into tears.
Su Shengsheng sighed and hugged the frightened Heng brother back, "Don't cry, Heng brother, little brother is just joking with you."
But Brother Heng didn't want to stay here and wanted to go back to find his mother.
Su Shengsheng noticed that when the boy heard the word "mother", the sound in his mouth immediately stopped.
Su Shengsheng placed the plates of snacks that Ning Yu had brought next to the brazier and said to Brother Heng with a smile, "Then can I tell you the story of Sun Wukong? You can listen for as long as you want."
Brother Heng loves to listen to this story the most. Even though he has heard it countless times, he still can’t get enough of it.
In the past, Su Shengsheng was afraid of disturbing his sleep, so she always limited the time she spoke.
Brother Heng had stopped crying, his attention completely diverted. "Brother Heng wants to listen."
After Su Shengsheng wiped his nose, she placed Brother Heng next to the bed he shared with the young man.
At first, Brother Heng was a little scared and twisted his body, but he was soon attracted by the Monkey King in Su Shengsheng's hand.
Su Shengsheng held up the newly cut Monkey King, a stone and several figures, and posed them in front of the candlelight.
"Let's listen to the first chapter: The Stone Monkey is born."
Qing Ning and Ning Yu were already tired of hearing this story. Seeing that the boy's eyes were unconsciously drawn to it, they quietly retreated.
Soon, the only sounds in the study were Su Shengsheng's story and Brother Heng's cheers.
Unfortunately, Brother Heng was young after all, and was soon taken over by sleepiness.
But Su Shengsheng did not stop. After a while, she took the opportunity to drink some water and pushed the hot snacks in front of the boy.
But the boy still ignored it.
Su Shengsheng did not try to persuade him and continued talking until the young man could no longer resist his sleepiness and slowly fell onto the couch.
She pounded her aching arm and walked over to the boy who had let down his guard and fallen asleep.
"You're quite hostile!" She sighed, gently took off the boy's shoes, and covered him with a blanket.
Fortunately, it was not a complete failure. She had determined that the child had a high level of perception of images.
She can intervene later with pictures to help him understand and retain the information.
After putting the pastries back next to the charcoal fire, the exhausted Su Shengsheng fell asleep with her clothes on.
Day 2
The early morning sunshine pours into the study.
Looking at Ning Jie who finished his meal obediently, Qing Ning gave Su Shengsheng a thumbs up with admiration.
Su Shengsheng also felt relieved.
She thought this child had a bad temper!
However, she was too happy too soon.
On the way to the bookstore, Ning Jie suddenly ran out.
If it weren’t for Zai Qing’s quick feet, Su Shengsheng really wouldn’t have been able to catch up.
"If you want to go home, besides having enough food to eat and enough strength to gather, you also need to know where to go!"
Su Shengsheng lowered her body and looked at him with a chuckle, "Do you know where the Duke's Mansion is? If you don't know, you can ask passersby."
As she spoke, she stood up, made way, and casually pointed at the pedestrians.
The boy kept his lips tightly closed and did not move.
Su Shengsheng exhaled and let Zaiqing hold him back, "Don't say I didn't give you a chance!"
Because of this commotion, Su Shengsheng was late for her lecture.
But there was someone who arrived earlier than her.
"Su Shengsheng..." Fan Wenchang's head was wrapped like a dumpling, and he looked at Su Shengsheng with gritted teeth.
The only eye he could open made him look like a pirate.
When he saw the boy behind Su Shengsheng, his roar stopped abruptly, "Why is this idiot here with you?"
That day, before he could finish his words, he was beaten out by people from the Duke's Mansion with sticks. He fell on the bed before he figured things out.
How could Fan Wenchang swallow this humiliation after being fooled time and time again, always defeated by a young woman?
Su Shengsheng glanced at his miserable face, which looked like a silkworm chrysalis. "It's your own fault. Let's just forget about the bet."
Fan Wenchang was so angry that his mouth twisted. "Don't even think about it, or are you scared?"
Su Shengsheng still had to go to class and didn't want to waste too much time with him. "You haven't fulfilled the conditions. If you still want to continue the bet, you are not allowed to disturb me for three months."
Fan Wenchang is now furious and is about to explode. How can he wait for three months?
"No." He refused. "I'll give you ten days at most."
Su Shengsheng's face was cold. "It takes a year for a child to learn to babble. Three months doesn't seem too short to me. Mr. Fan hasn't fulfilled his conditions, so let's end the bet. I think Mr. Fan can't afford to lose, so he can just default on his debt."
Fan Wenchang was so angry that his face turned red and his neck became thick. "Who said I can't afford to lose? Who is refusing to pay?"
"Master Fan, the treaty hasn't been reached yet, and you're still making trouble here. Aren't you trying to cheat?"
Seeing that everyone passing by was staring at him and laughing, Fan Wenchang felt embarrassed and angrily threw up his sleeves, "Okay, three months is three months. Do you think I'm afraid of you?"
After saying that, he limped into the sedan chair beside him and said, "Go back home."
Qing Ning waited until the sedan chair had gone far away before she could no longer hold back her laughter. "Miss, look at his pig head. It's so funny!"
But when she saw Ning Jie with a cruel look on his face, the smile on her face was immediately suppressed.
After seeing this, Su Shengsheng sighed and said, "Let's go to class first."
