Chapter Ninety-Eight: The River to Heaven

The night is like ink.

Only a red lantern was lit on the roof of the Xishen Pavilion.

"Stop!" A cold shout came from the darkness before they even reached the front of the Xishen Pavilion.

Bian Lang stopped and clasped his hands in a fist and said with a smile, "I am Bian Lang, a corpse driver, bringing a god of joy to your esteemed place."

"What did you say your name was?" The voice in the darkness was clearly filled with surprise and doubt.

Bian Lang repeated, "Bian Lang."

With a creak, the door opened, and someone carrying a red lantern arrived in front of Bian Lang in a few steps.

The man practically pressed the red lantern against Bian Lang's face.

"Master, it really is you." The man observed for a while, his voice filled with joy.

Bian Lang said speechlessly, "Could you please move the lantern away?"

"Yes, sir." The man laughed and stepped back, using the lantern to illuminate his own incredibly comical face.

Bian Lang didn't know how to describe that face except for the word "comical".

"It's actually the corpse of the Green Mountain Ancestor of Mount Shu! No wonder he's the Pavilion Master." The man was even more excited when he saw the corpse behind Bian Lang.

Bian Lang corrected him, "I'm just a corpse driver, not some kind of pavilion master."

“Eighty thousand years ago, the Joyful God Pavilion belonged to you, Pavilion Master.” The man was shocked, clearly surprised that Bian Lang himself didn’t know.

Bian Lang was stunned and asked, "This pavilion is the Happiness God Pavilion from 80,000 years ago?"

"The Joyful God Pavilion has been passed down through generations, but the position of Pavilion Master has always belonged to Bian Lang." The man said, leading the way and saying that Bian Lang would know once he went inside.

Bian Lang shook the Soul-Capturing Bell and followed the man into the gloomy and terrifying Xishen Pavilion.

"Master, my name is Maoqiu, and I am the steward of our Xishen Pavilion." The man introduced himself as he walked.

Bian Lang laughed and said, "Maoqiu, from now on you will be the head of the Xishen Pavilion."

"Sect Master, if it weren't for your divine statue suppressing us, I'm afraid our Joyful God Pavilion would have collapsed long ago." Maoqiu's voice was unusually serious for once.

Upon entering the main hall on the first floor of the Xishen Pavilion, one is immediately greeted by a huge golden statue of a deity.

The statue's posture and appearance are exactly like Bian Lang's.

Bian Lang was increasingly bewildered and asked, "Who the hell did this?"

"It could be the Pavilion Master from 80,000 years ago, or it could be the Pavilion Master from 30,000 years ago. It's too far in time to verify." Maoqiu remained serious.

Bian Lang wanted to destroy the statue, but Mao Qiu desperately stopped him, saying that if the statue was destroyed, the God of Happiness who was suppressed in the Happiness God Pavilion would rise from the dead, causing endless trouble.

Bian Lang thought for a moment and decided there was no need to argue, urging, "Quickly accept this auspicious deity."

Maoqiu chuckled, picked up the corpse of the Green Mountain Ancestor, and headed towards the side door.

[Successfully moved the remains of the Green Mountain Ancestor to the Joyful God Pavilion, reward: 50,000 years of internal energy.]

Bian Lang thought he was already powerful enough, but he never expected that the reward given by the Corpse Brother would be power, and a full 50,000 years' worth of power at once. The generosity was truly enormous.

After Maoqiu placed the body down, she came out but couldn't find Bianlang anywhere.

"To have met the Pavilion Master even once in this life, Maoqiu will die without regrets." Maoqiu's eyes were filled with tears.

The Xishen Pavilion has had countless stewards, but how many have actually seen Bian Lang's face?

Maoqiu turned its gaze back to the statue. If the statue suddenly glowed, it meant that Bianlang was in danger.

The disciples of Xishen Pavilion throughout the ages have been praying that the statue will never emit light again.

At that moment, Maoqiu was actually praying in his heart, hoping that the statue would start to shine as soon as possible so that he could bring people to help.

If Bian Lang knew that Mao Qiu had such thoughts, he would definitely come back and cut off Mao Qiu's head to kick around like a ball.

Bian Lang did not go far from Xishen Pavilion, but found a big tree in the nearby forest and lay down to sleep.

The next day, as the sun rose and its rays shone on his face, Bian Lang opened his eyes, got up, and stood atop the treetop to gaze into the distance.

Not far away, there is a great river whose opposite bank is invisible, rushing like a dragon.

Just then, a bird tried to fly from this side of the forest to the other side of the river.

But as soon as it reached the sky above the river, it suddenly swooped down and plunged into the river.

"Birds also commit suicide by jumping into the river?" Bian Lang asked, his face full of astonishment.

His first thought was that the bird didn't want to live anymore.

Turning my head, I saw on the other side that a flock of birds was doing the same thing, flying over the river and then plunging headfirst into the water.

What's bothering these birds?

"Master, it's magnificent, isn't it?" Maoqiu's voice drifted from the direction of Xishen Pavilion.

Bian Lang glanced over and saw Mao Qiu float over here as if she were a fairy.

“Any creature that tries to cross this river will sink to the bottom and rot in the mud. Those birds are, so am I, and so is the Pavilion Master,” Maoqiu said with a grin.

Bian Lang asked curiously, "What's going on?"

"This land we are in is surrounded by the Tongtian River. No matter which direction we go, we will eventually encounter the Tongtian River. No matter how high our cultivation level is, we will be sucked into the silt by the Tongtian River and unable to cross it." Maoqiu's eyes were shining, as if he was talking about something that excited him a lot.

Bian Lang understood what was being said: on this vast land surrounded by the Tongtian River, there existed four major cultivation sects, including the Iron Enclosure City.

But on the other side of the Tongtian River, there is another world.

Bian Lang asked, "What's on the other side of the river?"

"Nobody knows," Maoqiu shook its head.

The creatures living in this small circle have no chance to go to the other side of the river to see what's on the other side.

Those birds were quite persistent, one after another, desperately trying to cross the river.

Bian Lang looked at the surging Tongtian River and laughed, "Maoqiu, I think the existence of this Tongtian River is either protecting us or imprisoning us. Which do you think it is?"

"It's not about protection, it's definitely imprisonment. I've heard from our ancestors that this land is a cage," Maoqiu said.

Bian Lang asked, "Whose cage is this?"

"Who could possibly know?" Maoqiu shrugged.

Bian Lang said, "Farewell."

Maoqiu watched with a smile as Bianlang left once again.

To return to the Misty Forest, take a slightly longer route, and you'll pass through Ironwalled City.

Bian Lang has some questions about the Tongtian River that he would like to ask Dugu Meng, who may be able to answer them.

Iron City is one of the four major sects that stand in this world. They must have explored this world and must know about the existence of the Tongtian River.

Bian Lang stepped into the Iron Enclosure City and learned that when Dugu Meng returned earlier, she was ambushed by the Ascending Heaven Pavilion. Although she fought her way out, she was injured and was currently in seclusion.

Upon learning the purpose of Bian Lang's arrival, Dugu Qiusheng first treated Bian Lang to wine, and then took Bian Lang to find Leng Yueshuang.

Dugu Qiusheng often traveled, but this was the first time he had ever heard of the Tongtian River.

Leng Yueshuang was no stranger to the Tongtian River, but her knowledge of it was limited.

This continent is so ancient that there are so many things they know nothing about.

Whether the existence of the Tongtian River is for protection or imprisonment, Leng Yueshuang only knows that with the Tongtian River there, at least no more powerful enemies will appear before them.

"Mother, Brother Bian wants to know how to cross the river," Dugu Qiusheng said.

Leng Yueshuang said, "Go and search your father's study."
