Chapter 26
I was so scared that I dared not move, and secretly held the evil-repelling bead on my wrist tightly.
The elevator clanged, and I watched the number of floors on the display rapidly rise until it reached the 11th floor. The sudden stop caused me to lose my balance and fall flat on my face. The elevator door dinged and opened.
I looked behind me again, and there was nothing. Before me was room 1101. The door was boarded shut, and strange patterns were painted on the exterior walls. The other three rooms were equally unoccupied, and the entire floor felt eerie and gloomy. I didn't rush out of the elevator. Instead, I stood up and quickly pressed the 5th floor button. The elevator door dinged shut, and then the elevator returned to its normal speed, stopping at the 5th floor.
I quickly got off the elevator and ran home, but the incident wasn't over yet. Terrified, I hid under the covers, took out the evil-repelling beads, and clutched them tightly in my hand.
"Bang." Something fell to the floor in the living room.
But I didn't dare go out to look. I felt that the bedroom was the safest place in the whole house.
I don't know how long it took, but I drifted off to sleep. In my daze, I vaguely felt the bedroom door open.
I woke up at daybreak. The sunlight was particularly bright, almost glaring. I glanced at my watch. It was already ten in the morning. I rubbed my head, not knowing how I had fallen asleep the night before.
My mind was still in a state of confusion, and I drowsily went to wash up in my slippers. I walked to the bathroom, half-closed my eyes, brushed my teeth, and washed my face. Then I felt something on my right side.
I turned around and saw that all my toothbrushes had fallen to the floor. I saw countless long strands of hair hanging from the bathroom ceiling.
I suddenly sat up in bed.
Gasping for breath.
It turns out that it was just a dream I had just had.
But I also found something strange. How come the bedroom door was open?
This is definitely not something I started.
Before I could think again, I heard something fall in the living room again. I picked up my phone and immediately called Zhang Song. I was so scared that I didn't dare to move.
Zhang Song told me on the phone to stay at home and he would be there soon.
I was in the bedroom for less than an hour, and every second was torture.
Finally, I heard the sound of a car downstairs. I opened the curtains and saw that it was Zhang Song's car. A moment later, my cell phone rang.
"Open the door, I'm at your door." Zhang Song's voice was obviously panting, he must have run up.
I immediately put on my slippers and ran to the door. Just as I was about to open it, a thought suddenly occurred to me that made the hairs on my back stand on end. I looked through the peephole. There was no one outside. Then, a woman with a face full of pinpricks appeared in the peephole.
I was startled by the sudden appearance of the woman's face, and I stepped back hastily. The door lock moved on its own, the sound of unlocking so clear. I held the evil-repelling beads in front of me, closing my eyes and not daring to look at the door.
The door opened, and the cool breeze from the corridor blew on me. I opened my eyes for some reason, but she didn't come near me.
I looked at her in surprise. She looked completely new now, not at all like that scary person. She was still covered in a layer of red gauze, and beneath her beautiful face was a well-proportioned figure. Her feet were just floating on the ground.
This must be her appearance before she died. It was very similar to what I'd seen online at Zheng Yunyun's house. She seemed to have something to say to me, but I couldn't hear it. Now I was bolder and started to approach her. Embarrassingly, I'd forgotten to put away the evil-repelling bead in my hand. It flashed with a golden light, and then it disappeared before my eyes.
I looked at the place where she disappeared, and for a moment I didn't know what to do.
This went on until daybreak, when I quickly called Zhang Song and Mao Jianming. After this encounter, I decided I didn't want to sit around and wait for death anymore. I had to take the initiative to find the answer to this matter. My life had been completely disrupted by this during this period.
When I turned on my phone, I found that there was no record of the call I made to Zhang Song last night. In other words, from the moment I woke up from the nightmare until the ghost disappeared, it was all an illusion.
I found Zhang Song and Mao Jianming's phone numbers and called them. My first priority today was to check out the eleventh floor. They both said they'd be here soon, so I waited at home.
When they both arrived, I told them what had happened the night before. After I expressed my feelings, they both suggested we go to the eleventh floor. So the three of us left my house and planned to take the elevator straight up. But then something incredible happened: I pressed "11" several times, but it wouldn't go. But I had clearly taken the elevator up last night. Could that have been an illusion, too?
I had no choice but to press the button for the tenth floor and then walk up the stairs. But when I got to the tenth floor, I was dumbfounded again. The stairs to the tenth floor were completely blocked and we couldn't get up at all.
Zhang Song and Mao Jianming didn't question my lying. Mao Jianming said, "Why don't we go up to the twelfth floor and try walking down."
This is the only solution, but the stairs leading down from the 12th floor are probably also blocked.
Sure enough, after we reached the twelfth floor, we still couldn’t get down to the eleventh floor.
Just then, we ran into a tenant on the twelfth floor. The presence of a tenant wasn't surprising, but she was actually an elderly woman. As far as I know, the local residents of the building had all moved away, but judging by her appearance, she must be a local.
We went up to her and asked her why she couldn't go to the eleventh floor.
She first asked if we were from out of town, and we said we were tenants on the fourth floor. Then she let us into her house, and as soon as we entered, we knew why she hadn't moved out. A statue of Guanyin sat in the living room, and the air was thick with the scent of sandalwood. She looked like a fortune teller, someone who predicts career success, marriage prospects, and so on, much like a fortune teller. Of course, I'm talking about the real deal, not some street charlatan.
After talking to her, we learned that she and her husband had a daughter, but that she had been living abroad for years. Her husband had passed away two years ago, and she wasn't afraid of that, so she hadn't moved. She also revealed a crucial piece of information: the deceased woman's husband worked as a designer at an architectural firm and was no ordinary person. At first, we couldn't understand why architects were so unusual, given how common they were in the world. Later, she explained that she could tell the deceased woman's husband was probably someone similar to her.
This made me think more. If this was true, the woman's husband also knew some Xuanmen skills, which would raise the suspicion of murdering his wife. Because it is entirely possible for a Xuanmen person to kill someone without being present at the scene.
