Chapter 31
The creature's eyes shone green in the darkness, and it seemed to be heading straight for our car. Due to the poor visibility, I couldn't tell what it was for a moment.
It crawled quickly, reaching us in a matter of seconds. It pressed its face against the car window, peering in. That's when I got a clear look at it. It wore a hat, its face round and protruding forward. Its two mustaches, one on each side, stretched long, reaching down to its chest.
It was wearing gray clothes and its little eyes were staring at us in the car without blinking.
This is a monster. I don't know why it is approaching us.
It knocked on the car window and gestured with its hands, signaling me to get out. Strangely, the heavy rain stopped after it knocked twice. Sister Ma, who was sleeping soundly, was awakened by it and looked out the window with a confused look on her face.
This sight woke her up immediately, and she probably realized that it was a monster.
I was about to open the car window when Sister Ma grabbed me and asked, "Where are you going?"
"It doesn't seem to have any malicious intentions. I'll go down and take a look," I said.
The two of us opened the car door and looked at the monster carefully. Its feet were covered by clothes, but from the way it walked, it was definitely a catfish monster.
When it saw us coming down, it lowered its waist slightly and said, "My two lords, my grandson is trapped in a fishing net in the river. I need your help."
This is really aimed at the two of us.
I said, "Even if your grandson got caught in a fishing net, you should be able to rescue him."
"My Lords, the little one's hands and feet are not very flexible. I tried for a long time to rescue him but failed. I had no choice but to come to you."
Hearing it say this, I looked at its arms and legs. They were still just fins and a tail, not yet fully transformed. Such a monster's magical powers were limited. Even if it could transform, without immense merit, it probably wouldn't be able to achieve immortality. Indeed, not all monsters are evil; there are also good monsters with good intentions. This applies not only to monsters but also to ghosts.
I turned around and looked at Sister Ma and said, "Let's go take a look?"
"Let's go, they've come to us to ask for help." Sister Ma said with a yawn.
The giant catfish said thank you to us and then led us to the river. The sound of the roaring river could be heard from a long distance away. When we reached the river, we saw a very wide river.
"This is the Yinma River. I've heard for a long time that there is a water dragon king in the Yinma River. It seems that the legend is true." Sister Ma said.
"How can I, an old man, be worthy of the title of Dragon King? I am just a fish that has lived a little longer. I can't even do anything when my grandson is caught." It sighed.
The Yinma River is a tributary of the Songhua River. Its waters flow rapidly and dangerously. Its original name was the Yilemen River. "Yinma" is the transliteration of "Yilemen," which means "King of Hell" in Manchu. This shows how dangerous this river is.
"It's such a big river, how can the two of us help you?" I looked at the turbulent river. I am not a good swimmer, so let alone saving people, I don't even know where I will be washed to if I get into the water.
"My two lords, please follow me." It said and jumped into the water.
Sister Ma and I exchanged glances, debating whether to jump in. We weren't entirely sure whether this catfish spirit was good or evil; it was all just a feeling. If it got angry after we jumped in, we wouldn't be its match in the water.
"You stay on the shore, I'll go down, and you take action if the situation goes wrong!" I whispered in Sister Ma's ear.
Just as she was about to pull me up, I had already jumped into the water.
I was very afraid of water when I was little. I later learned to swim, but my skills were only very limited. I could swim a few times in a swimming pool, but once I entered a wild river like this, I was completely unable to do it. But this time when I entered the water, I didn't feel suffocated at all, and I could even breathe normally.
With this discovery, I immediately caught up with the catfish spirit in front of me. It swam with me until I finally saw a catfish entangled in the broken net. The catfish looked to be at least a meter long.
A fish this big, wrapped in a giant fishing net, was stuck to the rocks at the riverbed, unable to move. I knew it was the giant catfish's grandson, so I quickly swam over to it. My idea was to untie the net from the rocks first, then swim back to shore. That way, Sister Ma and I would be much better at untangling the net than I could on my own.
But as soon as I picked it up, I realized the net was extraordinary. It wasn't made of ordinary fishing line, but rather golden cicada silk. The so-called golden cicada silk is just a name for a specially cultivated net used to catch monsters. In other words, this net isn't just for catching fish; it's specifically designed to capture them.
At this point, I hesitated again. If this demon-catching net was truly made by someone from the Xuanmen sect, it must have a purpose. If I let it go, I'd probably get into trouble.
"Sir, the second son's family has always been honest and upright, and has never done anything harmful to others. This monster-catching net was not there yesterday, but was encountered by my grandson while he was playing today. I know how difficult it is, but please save my grandson's life, otherwise when someone comes to collect the net tomorrow, I don't know what will happen to my poor grandson." said the big catfish spirit.
The little catfish caught in the net made a squeaking sound, as if responding to its words. I actually saw it shedding tears in the water.
"I can help you this time, but after your grandson is rescued, you need to leave here immediately and you can't reveal our information," I said.
"I'll listen to you, adults, in everything." It seemed very excited when it heard me promise it.
I immediately used the Golden Feather Arrow to cut the monster-catching net, and the little catfish immediately escaped from the net. At this moment, there was a shock in the water, and a feeling of suffocation followed.
"Oh no!" the catfish demon shouted, then quickly transformed back into its original form.
It must have been over two meters long, enormous, and it grabbed my wrist with its jaws and swam quickly toward the surface. I pinched my nose tightly, and it leaped from the water, throwing me to the shore.
"Thank you, sir!" Its grateful voice came from the river, followed by the cheerful voice of the little catfish, and their two figures disappeared in the Drinking Horse River.
The rain suddenly stopped at this time, the dark sky became clear, and the huge moon appeared.
I was still marveling at their speed when I heard a fight on the shore. I turned and saw Sister Ma battling two men. I was startled, realizing it must be the person who had cast the demon net.
No wonder the catfish monster ran so fast, it was afraid of being caught by the two of them.
I ran out of the water and shot a golden-feathered arrow at the two of them.
Sister Ma freed herself from the encirclement, looked at me, and said, "You're finally out!"
