Chapter 41
Sunshade Mountain.
Looking at the vast expanses of spruce forest before my eyes, it felt like a different world.
"Let's go." Liu Danchen woke me up when he saw that I was a little dazed.
I followed Liu Danchen, looking for the Resurrection Grass, but we only knew it was deep in the Shading Mountain, not its exact location. The ancient trail we took last time only covered the outer edge of the mountain, so we couldn't take that route.
The mountain, which was already difficult to walk on, became even more difficult because there was no road. We could only move forward along the gaps in the forest.
Liu Danchen kept looking at the compass in his hand and adjusting the direction, and the two of us moved forward with difficulty.
After finally reaching the top of a hill, I looked into the distance and saw only towering mountains on all sides, with few people around.
I looked along the ridge and saw towering ancient trees everywhere. Where could I find the resurrection grass here?
"Little sister, look, what's that over there?" Liu Danchen pointed to a place at the foot of the mountain in front.
I looked in the direction he pointed, and through the gaps between the old trees, I could vaguely see a different color from the deep mountains. If it weren't for our high position, I probably wouldn't have seen it.
"Why don't we go and take a look? Otherwise, if we keep searching like headless flies, we will probably come back empty-handed." I asked.
"Let's go." Liu Danchen listened to what I said and thought it made sense.
This Shade Mountain is really vast and undulating. The ravine between the two ridges makes it difficult for Liu Danchen and me to move forward.
After finding the right direction, the two of us headed straight for that place.
As the saying goes, it is easy to go up the mountain but difficult to go down. Climbing the mountain has already consumed a lot of our physical strength, and now we are all very tired. When going down the mountain, we have to pay attention to our feet to avoid stepping on air and falling.
After walking for a while, a narrow dirt road suddenly appeared in front of us. It did not seem to be built by humans, but seemed to be formed by other animals passing by frequently. The strange thing was that there were no animal footprints on the road.
Seeing that the road became easier to walk on, Liu Danchen and I were both surprised.
The two of us walked along the road, which was like the one leading to the place we had just seen on the top of the hill. It was a little narrow at first, but now it could easily accommodate three or four people walking side by side.
But when things are out of the ordinary, there must be something wrong. At first, I didn't notice it, and it was only after I had walked for a while that I noticed a subtle grinding sound on both sides of the road. It wasn't really a grinding sound, more like a chewing sound, like insects eating leaves. But normally, the sound is so subtle that it's impossible to hear it.
"Senior Brother Liu, did you hear any sound?" I stopped and asked.
Liu Danchen and I stopped and listened carefully for a while, then looked at me strangely and said, "There's no sound at all."
I listened carefully again and there was indeed a sound. I was definitely not mistaken.
I looked at both sides of the road, and it didn't matter that I looked, but I suddenly got goosebumps all over my body.
On the trees and blades of grass on both sides of the mountain road, there were densely packed strange insects. They were shaped like caterpillars, long and with many legs. There were two long, fine hairs on their heads, almost as long as their bodies. They stood up like cobras when threatened, but unlike cobras, they stood up to three-quarters of their body height and looked at us.
Just looking at us!
Liu Danchen saw me staring at the roadside motionlessly, so he looked over there too.
"Run!" I shouted.
Liu Danchen also saw the dense swarm of insects. After hearing my shout, he followed me and ran forward quickly.
The insects on both sides of the road must have been awakened by my shouting, and they fell to the ground with a clattering sound. As soon as they landed, the entire ground was covered with strange insects, chasing us from behind. They didn't crawl on the ground like caterpillars, but jumped and ran.
Liu Danchen and I had never seen such bizarre insects before, but even if we hadn't, we knew the consequences of being caught by them would be disastrous. We pressed our feet hard, wishing we could fly. Although the insects were small, they jumped incredibly fast, and we couldn't shake them off.
"This is a swarm of insects!" Liu Danchen shouted at me while running.
"What should we do? If we keep running like this, we will be caught up sooner or later!" I was extremely anxious.
"Insects are generally afraid of fire. Let's see if we can start a fire later."
Hearing this, I felt a surge of despair. Not to mention whether there was any chance to start a fire, where could we find the tinder to start a fire? Although it was autumn, the sun-shading mountain was covered with evergreen forests, and it was impossible to start a fire in a short period of time.
"Run, see if they'll stop."
I know this hope is slim. Seeing how relentlessly they are chasing us, there's no way they'll let us go.
The two of us ran desperately in front, countless strange insects chasing us from behind. Finally, I couldn't run any longer and stopped to breathe heavily. Liu Danchen saw me stop and pulled me to continue running. He helped me save some energy, but my strength was still gradually failing.
I knew if we kept running like this, we would be caught up in less than a minute, so we had to find another way.
"Brother Liu, is the Red Lotus True Fire effective against these real-life insects?"
I was scared by these bugs, so I asked this question.
"There's no ordinary fire, so where does the Red Lotus True Fire come from?" Senior Brother Liu was obviously fooled by my irrelevant words.
I stopped running and shouted, "South Pole Fire Bell, Gold Fire Heavenly Ding. With a single thought, the spirit takes form."
The golden fire bell instantly appeared in my hand. I swung it hard, and a red lotus fire burned towards the insects.
Seeing the raging fire in front of me, Liu Danchen stopped and looked at the bugs behind him.
The moment the Red Lotus True Fire came into contact with the insect swarm, crackling explosions were heard from the flames, and there was a burnt smell in the air.
It seems to be really useful!
When the first burst of true fire dissipated, the insects rushed forward again. I swung another burst of true fire from my hand, cutting the road. The insects on the other side of the flames made anxious chirping sounds, but they dared not take a single step beyond the line of defense.
Seeing that the bugs hadn't advanced any further, Liu Danchen turned to look at me and said, "Little sister, you can actually use the Red Lotus True Fire!"
Seeing the true fire take effect, I sat down on the ground, panting and said, "How do you think I became friends with your master?"
"But the Red Lotus True Fire only works on evil spirits, so why are these insects afraid of it too?"
"I don't know either. Why bother? We're lucky we didn't get eaten by them."
Liu Danchen took out his water bottle, took a big sip, and said, "That's right. I never thought there would be such a terrifying insect in the world."
I rested for a while, stood up, dusted off my butt, and said, "Let's go quickly. That flame won't last long."
Liu Danchen and I quickly fled from here.
We didn't notice that after we left and the Red Lotus True Fire dissipated, the insects started chasing us again.
