Chapter 7
The incident I saw last night about the haunted building has affected me through my dream. When I get back home, I must move immediately.
After passing Guiyang, the road became very rough and difficult to travel on. We were delayed for another day, and by the time we reached Eshan, another day had already passed.
The whole sky was foggy, but it didn't rain. Mao Jianming and his colleagues tried to contact their instructors by satellite phone several times, but nothing went through.
At this point, we all had a feeling something was amiss. We could only ask the local Yi people if they had seen the professor's group. They told us that a month ago, four or five people had indeed passed through here, asked for directions, and had already entered Mount Eshan.
We asked around along the way and followed their footsteps. Finally, Mao Jianming found the marks left by the professor and his group, which gave us hope.
The satellite phone call didn't work, so we had to follow the trail marks deeper into Mount Eshan. Mount Eshan is vast, and the deep forests are nearly pathless. We could barely make out a new, man-made trail, likely created by the professor.
More eye-catching marks appeared on the tree trunks, and there were traces of campfires and camping on the road, which further confirmed that the professor and his team were going deeper.
We set up our tent here today and started a fire from the bonfire they left behind. We ate some compressed biscuits and waited until tomorrow morning to continue our journey.
"Professor, are they okay?" I asked.
"It should be fine. Maybe the signal is not good in the deep mountains and forests. We just follow the marks all the way and should be able to catch up with them soon."
As we were talking, Mao Jianming's satellite phone rang. He quickly answered it. It must have been Mao Jianming and his team's professor. He sounded excited, saying they'd made a discovery and urging them to catch up quickly. The signal on the professor's end was really bad. Another electric buzzing sounded, and the satellite phone disconnected.
This news undoubtedly gave Mao Jianming and others a shot in the arm. We were relieved and the atmosphere became relaxed.
Zhang Yu suddenly suggested that everyone tell a ghost story.
Hearing his words, we all looked at him, feeling embarrassed because tonight, it was his and Zheng Yunyun's turn to keep watch, and we saw through his thoughts.
Zheng Yunyun lowered her head shyly.
It was the middle of the night, deep in the mountains, and I didn't think telling ghost stories was a good idea, but I couldn't spoil the fun. If they all agreed, I had no objection.
"Then you speak first." Li Bin said, fanning the flames.
This must have been a collusion between the two of them.
Zhang Yu spoke excitedly: "What I'm talking about is a true story, which happened in our county. My aunt told me this. She works in a hospital. There was a nurse in their department who was very kind to the patients. Then there was an old lady whose sons and daughters were not filial to her. They left her alone in the hospital with no one to take care of her. That nurse took very good care of her.
But the elderly woman's diabetes had already led to kidney failure, and she relied on dialysis every week to survive. She stayed in the hospital for nearly six months, and the nurse was so welcoming and warm, they gradually became close. Her children had initially considered abandoning her in the hospital, hoping she would die quickly to save them the trouble. However, thanks to the nurse's meticulous care, she managed to survive for nearly six months.
His children were unwilling to do so and insisted on replacing the nurse, meaning they would not allow her to take care of their mother. The new nurse was not very attentive to the old lady. The old lady kept asking to be replaced, but her children disagreed and the department staff were helpless.
Later, the old lady said every day that she would rather die and stopped going to dialysis. However, she passed away after only a few days.
One night, while on night shift, the nurse was standing at the corner of the hospital staircase when she saw an elderly woman crying. Being a kindhearted woman, she approached and asked why she was crying in the middle of the night. When the elderly woman looked up, she was horrified to learn that it was the elderly woman who had died in their department two days prior. Seeing the nurse, the elderly woman smiled strangely and said, "You've been so kind to me. Come down with me and take care of me."
After saying that, the old lady grabbed the nurse's neck. Fortunately, someone heard the nurse's screams and rescued her. But according to the person who rescued her, it was very strange to see the nurse strangling herself.
After that, the nurse was never nice to the patient again.”
After Zhang Yu finished speaking, it was Mao Jianming's turn.
He looked at me and said, "This story of mine really happened, and I am the protagonist. Brother Song also knows about it. When I was a child, when I walked from Brother Song's house to my house, our two houses were not close to each other. We had to cross a river. If I walked at a normal speed, I would reach the entrance of our village in ten minutes, but that night I walked for half a day and still couldn't get there. As I walked, I saw a stage with a woman singing on it and a group of people standing below.
When I got closer, I realized that everyone standing in the audience was dead, so I ran as fast as I could. But the woman singing the opera held me back, so I couldn't escape. I was so scared that I fainted. When I woke up, I was lying in another village dozens of miles away.
After listening to Mao Jianming's story, I always felt that I had heard this story before, but I couldn't remember it. Maybe he told it to me before.
"I know this, it's true." Zhang Song said from the side.
"Brother Song, I didn't expect that you look so honest, but it turns out you are always telling lies." Zheng Yunyun said with a smile.
Zhang Yu also agreed: "I can tell you made it up right away, and it's not scary at all."
Mao Jianming gave a wry smile and said, "Just think of it as something I made up. Brother Song, tell me about your story."
Zhang Song scratched the back of his head and said naively, "I didn't encounter any problems when I was a kid, so you guys should tell me."
"That won't work. We agreed that each of us would tell one story at a time." Zheng Yunyun said nonsense.
Zhang Song, unable to shirk his responsibility, said, "Then I'll tell you about something that happened to me in the army, but it's not about ghosts."
"It's okay, just tell me. Just scare people." Zhang Yu said with a smirk.
Zhang Song slowly spoke, "That happened a few years ago. We went to XZ on a mission to protect a team of scientific researchers. The organization had us fully armed, thinking we were just dealing with some wild beasts in the mountains. But what happened next was completely beyond my imagination."
You've all heard of Shigatse, right? It's just south of Tibet, beside the Yarlung Zangbo River. Under Shigatse City lies SZ County, where our group settled. There's a legend about a woman named Bamu in Sakya. It's said that during the day, Bamu transforms into a beautiful woman to seduce men. At night, she transforms into a demon and makes the man into a human-skin drum.
We listened to Zhang Song's detailed story, as if he was recalling something.
