“I understand the Hong Kong government’s reluctance to disrupt the free market. If we reach a cooperation agreement in the future to deal with international speculators, I can handle anything the Hong Kong government is unable to do directly.” Chen Dong smiled. “That’s my condition.”
Chen Dongzhi looked at him smugly, as if he was confident that he could become the Chief Executive of Hong Kong.
"Are you planning to collaborate with the Hong Kong government to leverage international hedge funds?" Du Xingzhi asked, somewhat incredulously.
Chen Dong nodded silently after hearing this.
"You said you can withdraw HK$100 billion at any time. If it were to be invested in the Hong Kong market, how much would you be willing to spend?"
Du Xingzhi was more concerned about the future of the Hong Kong stock market, after all, Chen Dong had repeatedly said that he wanted to go against Soros.
"All HK$100 billion will be invested in the Hong Kong market." Chen Dong said calmly, as if this was a decision he had been making for a long time.
Du Xingzhi's face twitched, and he took a somewhat awkward sip of tea, forcing a smile. "100 billion Hong Kong dollars, you didn't just pull out your entire fortune, did you?"
"It's not like I'd have to confiscate everything." Chen Dong smiled at him. "What, President Du, are you trying to test the depth of my wealth?"
"I wouldn't dare." Du Xingzhi composed himself, thinking that if Chen Dong was really willing to invest HK$100 billion in the Hong Kong stock market for the long term, then international speculators would have another stabilizer when they launched an attack on the Hong Kong stock market in the future.
Longteng is that stabilizer.
After seeing Chen Dong off, Du Xingzhi rushed to the Financial Secretary to discuss with Yang Fugui whether to meet Chen Dong's conditions and have the Chief Executive intervene.
When Yang Fugui learned that Chen Dong had personally visited the Financial Regulatory Bureau, his expression turned somewhat grim. "Are you sure he's not part of the international speculators' group?"
"Probably not." Du Xingzhi gritted his teeth and continued, "If he's an international speculator, the safest course of action would be to join the side shorting the Hong Kong stock market."
“International speculators usually make a quick profit and then leave. Chen Dong’s willingness to take a long position and invest in the Hong Kong stock market for the long term is clearly not the behavior of international speculators.”
When the Financial Secretary heard Du Xingzhi say such a thing, he looked disgusted and said, "You're too naive."
"He only came to your door and said a few words. As for that HK$100 billion, can he really come up with it? Even if he can, will he really use that money for long-term investment in the Hong Kong stock market?"
“But…” Du Xingzhi gritted his teeth, feeling somewhat uneasy. In his heart, he was on Chen Dong’s side. After all, HK$100 billion was such a huge temptation that not everyone could refuse. But thinking about it carefully, Yang Fugui’s words were not wrong.
"But what?" Yang Fugui asked.
“When Soros shorted the Hong Kong dollar, Chen Dong joined forces with the four major families to protect the market. Although he did this through a third-party institution and the method of operation was very covert, Li Ka-shing once mentioned it to us at a gathering.”
Du Xingzhi explained, "According to him, Chen Dong took the initiative to invite people from several other major families through him, which means that he was credited with supporting the Hong Kong stock market last time."
Upon hearing this, Yang Fugui sighed coldly and tapped the cigar beside him with his finger. "Look at you, so naive again."
"In the Hong Kong dollar market, if someone is shorting, then someone will inevitably be going long. These are just normal speculative tactics."
"You say the four major families have an emotional attachment to Hong Kong, and I can understand their involvement in protecting the city. But why is Chen Dong involved?"
"It's all about the money!"
This one sentence labeled Chen Dong as someone who was after money, which was truly unfair to him. The analysts and members of the president's committee who had been standing by couldn't stand it anymore.
After a moment of silence, Xu Jing, the chief advisor of the Financial Department, hesitated before saying, "Actually, I had specifically investigated Chen Dong's background before."
"Although he frequently dabbles in various stock markets, he has almost never cooperated with Soros or Robertson. These two are the top figures in international hedge funds. Moreover, not only have they never cooperated, but when Soros attacked the Hong Kong dollar last time, Chen Dong and the four major families joined forces to go long, almost causing Soros to lose everything."
Xu Jing's words caught Yang Fugui's attention. "Are you saying that Chen Dong is a rival to international hedge funds?"
“In the world of capital, there are no permanent rivals or enemies,” Xu Jing adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses. “However, what’s interesting is that Chen Dong and this Soros seem to really not get along.”
"It is said that before the Indonesian rupiah plummeted and the Indonesian stock market collapsed, Chen Dong sold a large sum of Indonesian rupiah to Soros through the general manager of the investment department of an Asian investment bank. Soros was subsequently ripped off in the Indonesian stock market and thus began to target Chen Dong."
"Afterwards, they met in the Korean won market. Although there was no real conflict between them, Chen Dong deliberately spread the news in many Asian media outlets that the Korean won was in a bad position, which misled Soros, Robertson and others, causing them to get mired in the quagmire and almost not be able to get back from the Korean won market."
"Moreover," Xu Jing said mysteriously in a low voice, "I heard from the brokerage that Chen Dong made hundreds of billions of dollars in the Korean won market that time."
"After that, didn't Longteng make purchases globally? The so-called 10 billion yuan bounty was actually made using this money."
That makes sense. Yang Fugui and Du Xingzhi exchanged a glance and smiled knowingly.
"What grudge does Chen Dong have against Soros? Why does Chen Dong always try to swindle Soros whenever he goes there?" Yang Fugui said, somewhat carried away.
