Proposing marriage at home
Su Yuexing sold the wild rabbit and got two taels of silver. She then went to the clinic to get the medicinal herbs that Su Yueyang usually needed to drink.
I overheard the patients in the clinic discussing the Li family's young master's marriage to bring good luck.
After leaving the clinic, Su Yuexing said to Liu Jin beside her, "This is complete nonsense. How could a man's illness suddenly get better after marrying a woman?"
Liu Jin said, "That's how wealthy families are; it's for peace of mind and also for good luck."
"Who do you think would have such heartless parents who would let their daughter marry into a family where she would become a widow?" Su Yuexing asked.
Liu Jin thought for a moment and replied, "Master Li said that regardless of family background, some daughters from poor families will be sent there by their families."
"It seems that not just anyone can get in; it still depends on their birth chart and whether they get along with the eldest son of the Li family."
Su Yuexing said sympathetically, "This young master of the Li family is quite pitiful. He already has health problems, and now even his marriage is decided by a wandering sorcerer. He can't make any decisions for himself."
Liu Jin said, "This is a matter for their wealthy family; we'll just watch the show."
Su Yuexing's gaze then settled on a shop.
Seeing that she hadn't left, Liu Jin asked, "What's wrong?"
Su Yuexing's eyes flickered, and she said, "Go to Guiyun Pastry Shop and buy me red bean cakes."
Liu Jin scratched his head in confusion and asked, "Why would you suddenly want to eat pastries?"
Su Yuexing urged, "Go quickly, I'll wait for you here after the shop closes."
Liu Jin had no choice but to go to the place Su Yuexing had suggested to buy pastries.
Su Yuexing covered her mouth and chuckled. She went to the shoe store, measured the shoes with her hand, and found they fit perfectly. "How much, boss?" she asked.
The shoe shop owner smiled and said, "Five qian of silver."
Su Yuexing took out some silver from her pocket, handed it to the shopkeeper, put it in the basket, and covered it with the medicinal herbs.
Liu Jin ran over, panting, and said, "Xing'er, Guiyun Pastry Shop is closed, so I didn't buy it for you."
Su Yuexing glanced at the dusky sky and asked in confusion, "When does Guiyun Pastry Shop close so early?"
A hint of unease flashed across Liu Jin's face as he tried to distract her by saying, "How about we go get something else to eat?"
Su Yuexing shook her head and said, "No, let's go back quickly."
"Okay." Liu Jin nodded awkwardly.
Actually, the shop wasn't closed. It was just that when he bought the red bean cakes, the waiter's five qian of silver made him pause in his action of taking out his money.
His life was also very difficult. He relied on his mother's embroidery for a living, and the travel expenses for his trip to the capital were borrowed by his mother from various people.
He really couldn't bear to spend five coins to buy a few pastries. Xing'er, I'm sorry, I will definitely make it up to you when I have the chance.
Upon arriving at Xikou Village, Su Yuexing said, "Brother Liu, you don't need to see me off. You should go back and get some rest."
Liu Jin nodded and said, "Okay." He watched her leave.
Su Yuexing returned home, opened the door, and Su Shi stepped forward and said, "Xing'er, you're back."
Su Yuexing nodded and said, "These are Xiaobao's medicinal herbs."
Su took it and said, "Go eat quickly, Xing'er has worked hard too."
Su Yuexing sat down, and Su took the medicinal herbs out of the basket, noticing something wrapped in cloth at the bottom.
She picked up the cloth, slowly unfolded it, and saw a pair of shoes inside. She measured them with her hand and realized that these weren't the shoes Xing'er had bought for her child's father.
Liu Jin's image came to mind; it seemed that Xing'er really liked Liu Jin.
If she knew we gave her birth date and time to the Li family, I wonder how much she would hate us?
At the dinner table, Madam Su came out of her room, glanced at Su Yuexing, and said, "Xing'er, there's something I need to tell you."
Su Yuexing picked up a piece of food and put it in her bowl, asking, "What's the matter?"
Madam Su glanced at her husband and said, "It concerns your marriage."
Su Shi paused in his eating, kicked Su Shi under the table, and gave her a look.
Su Yuexing suddenly recalled her actions with Liu Jin during the day, her face flushed slightly, and she didn't dare to look up at them.
Su Yueyang and Su Yuewei, standing nearby, watched their eldest sister with great interest.
"Mother! Eldest sister is blushing." Su Yue smiled, her eyes crinkling.
Su Yuexing touched her cheeks, which were indeed very hot. "Father, Mother! I'm finished eating!" she said, and then fled as if she were escaping.
"Eat your food," Su said to the two children.
Su Yuexing returned to her room, closed the door tightly, and felt her heart pounding.
Why should I run away? "Gurgle!" My stomach rumbled; I've been busy all day.
I only ate steamed buns for breakfast, and didn't even eat lunch. When I finally managed to eat, I was too embarrassed to continue.
It's just my marriage to Liu Jin, what's there to be embarrassed about?
It seems his parents are quite satisfied with him.
Su Yuexing opened the door and came out, and everyone was slightly surprised to see her.
Ignoring the surprised expressions on everyone's faces, she continued eating, and Su Shi and Su Shi exchanged a glance.
"Mother, were you just about to talk about my marriage with Liu Jin?" Su Yuexing asked.
“Sigh…” Su Shi had just responded when Su Shi said from the side, “Whom to marry is ultimately up to us parents.”
Su Yuexing paused in her eating, feeling that something her father had said was a bit strange.
Su tried to smooth things over, saying, "Xing'er, what your father means is, besides Liu Jin, is there anyone else you'd like to consider?"
"I hope you don't put all your eggs in one basket."
Su Yuexing frowned slightly and looked at them, saying, "Of course not, your daughter isn't the kind of person who's fickle."
"Moreover, Liu Jin also said that he would marry me after he returned from taking the imperial examination in the capital."
"Oh, right, Mother, could you help me tonight to make some dry rations for Liu Jin so I can give them to him on his journey tomorrow?"
Su said with slight surprise, "Liu Jin is leaving!"
Su Yuexing nodded and said, "Yes, we left in a bit of a hurry."
Su Shi took a sip of soup and said calmly, "You can't take a man's words seriously."
Su Yuexing frowned and looked at him, saying, "Dad! What's wrong with you today? I feel like you're not getting along with Liu Jin."
Madam Su slapped Su Shi and said to Su Yuexing, "Xing'er, don't take it to heart with your father, that's just his temper."
After finishing their work, Su Shi and his wife sat on the bed. "Don't tell Xing'er about that matter yet," Su Shi said with a troubled expression.
Madam Su said with displeasure, "This concerns her life's most important matter, of course she has the right to know!"
Su Shi felt anxious and said, "I didn't say I wouldn't tell her, I just said I'd tell him later!"
Su remained silent. Su Shi continued, "Wait for the results. If we're selected, we'll talk about it. If we're not selected, let's pretend this never happened."
Su sighed and lay down on the bed with her back to Su Shi.
As dawn broke, Su Yuexing got up early to wash and prepare some dry food. She took the warm food and her shoes to the village entrance.
Not long after, two figures slowly approached. Su Yuexing looked closely and saw that it was Liu Jin and his mother.
"Auntie, it's Liu Jin," Su Yuexing greeted with a smile.
When Liu saw Su Yuexing, she didn't give her a friendly look and said coldly, "What are you doing here?"
Su Yuexing's enthusiasm seemed to be doused with cold water, and she said somewhat helplessly, "I'll see Brother Liu off."
Liu said irritably, "Does my son need you to deliver him?"
"My son is not someone that just anyone can aspire to." Her face was full of arrogance.
Su Yuexing turned to Liu Jin for help, hoping he could put in a good word for her.
Liu Jin gently tugged at Liu Shi's clothes, "Mother! It's only right that Xing'er, as a friend, comes to see me off."
Su Yuexing frowned slightly, stung by the word "friend" he uttered. Friend?
It really was wishful thinking on my part.
"Brother Liu, you didn't tell your mother about the promise you made to me?" Su Yuexing asked accusingly.
Liu Jin panicked and avoided looking her in the eye.
Liu said with a sharp and sarcastic tone, "What promise? My son is not the kind of person who makes promises lightly."
Su Yuexing raised an eyebrow and said sarcastically, "Is that so?"
Liu grabbed Liu Jin and said, "Jin'er, what promises did you make to this woman?"
Liu Jin was anxious and didn't know what to do. "No! Mother! I didn't promise."
Su Yuexing felt as if her heart was being torn apart. She forced back her tears and stuffed the bundle into his arms. "There are a pair of shoes and some dry food in here. Take good care of yourself on the road."
After saying that, she turned to leave, but Liu Jin grabbed her hand and said, "Xing'er."
Su Yuexing stopped abruptly, and without turning her head, said, "Brother Liu, you've overstepped your bounds."
Liu Jin slowly released his grip.
"I wish Brother Liu all the best for the future." After saying that, she ran off quickly with a determined look in her eyes.
Liu looked him over carefully and said, "Alright, son, it's time to get going."
"Okay." Liu Jin nodded.
"Be careful on the road," Liu instructed.
Liu Jin looked back every three steps, watching the figures at the village entrance grow smaller and smaller.
As soon as Su Yuexing returned to her room, she locked herself in and refused to eat.
Madam Su was anxiously banging on the door from outside, "Xing'er, what's wrong with you?"
"How did things turn out like this after just one trip out?"
"No matter what, you have to eat something!"
Su Yuexing said listlessly, "Mom! I'm fine, I'm just a little tired and want to sleep."
Su Shi said, "Don't worry about her! Let her go hungry for a few meals, she won't starve to death."
“The child’s father!” Su said with displeasure.
"It's time to go weed the fields," Su Shi urged.
Helpless, Madam Su placed the food on the stool outside and instructed her two siblings, "When your eldest sister comes out, make sure she eats, understand?"
Su Yueyang and Su Yuewei nodded obediently, "Okay."
Another day passed, and Su Yuexing still hadn't come out of her room. Su Shi said to Su Shi, "Husband, think of something."
The sound of gongs and drums could be heard outside, and it was getting closer and closer.
"The eldest son of the Li family in Pingchun County has come to marry Su Yuexing of the Su family!" someone outside announced.
Su Shi and Su Shi were shocked. They quickly opened the door and carried in box after box of betrothal gifts. The scene left the Su family dumbfounded.
The steward of the Li family said, "The betrothal gifts are all listed here, totaling fifty thousand taels of silver. Please take a look."
Su Shi trembled as he took the paper from him. He couldn't read, but seeing the paper filled with writing, he exclaimed excitedly, "Good, good, good!"
The butler looked around and asked, "Excuse me, where is Miss Su Yuexing?"
The words had barely left her lips when the door opened from the inside, and someone said, "That's me!" Looking at the yard piled high with boxes, she asked suspiciously, "What do you mean by this?"
