Director Wang's wife, Li Hongmei, was trying to find some peace and quiet in her room, but fate had other plans. She heard Director Wang shouting her name.
Despite her reluctance, Li Hongmei had no choice but to put on an overcoat and go to Director Wang's bedroom. Upon entering, she found He Manning sitting on the edge of the bed, her hair disheveled, crying and covering her face with her hands.
Director Wang was only wearing a pair of shorts, his body was covered in fat, and his face was filled with extreme anger.
"Get out of here right now. You'd better watch out if you dare tell anyone about what happened today."
Director Wang roared at He Manting.
Seeing Director Wang's state, He Manting was somewhat at a loss. She quickly tore off her clothes on the bed, dressed haphazardly, and walked out.
After Director Wang looked at He Manting and left, he spoke to his wife, Li Hongmei.
"Did anyone come here last night?"
Li Hongmei said sarcastically, "Besides that little grape, who else is there?"
Director Wang knew this was Li Hongmei and blamed himself for bringing a woman home. But in this day and age, if he didn't bring her home, where else could he go to book a hotel room? He'd need a letter of introduction.
"Stop saying all this useless stuff, take a look."
Li Hongmei followed Director Wang's hand and saw that the place where the small safe used to be was empty.
"How could this happen? Who has the ability to get into your bedroom and take this safe away? This thing weighs at least 100 pounds."
Director Wang was getting anxious when he realized that his wife was indeed unaware of the situation.
"All my savings from these years are in there."
Li Hongmei suddenly said, "Oh dear, what about the safe in the study?"
"Oh no, go check it out quickly."
Director Wang, looking like a big meatball, ran to the study in a few quick steps.
He was stunned when he entered the room. All the antiques in the study had disappeared. When he ran to the safe, he found that the large safe in the study was also gone.
This is really strange. Who has the ability to take away two safes, which weigh several hundred kilograms in total?
Are you sure you didn't see anyone?
Director Wang turned to ask Li Hongmei.
Li Hongmei shook her head. "Where would I see anyone? The safe isn't in my room. You were sleeping so soundly with that little vixen last night, didn't you notice anything at all?"
Director Wang's face turned bright red; he had indeed been quite tired yesterday and had slept rather soundly.
"Go check if there's anything else that's been lost. Also, wake your daughter up. And send Xiao Zhang downstairs away; she can't know about this."
"Xiao Zhang downstairs is the nanny that Director Wang hired," Li Hongmei replied. She went downstairs first and saw Xiao Zhang preparing breakfast.
Tell her to stop what she's doing and go home. Xiao Zhang looked at Li Hongmei with some fear, thinking she had done something wrong and was being kicked out.
This job is considered pretty good locally; it includes room and board, and you get 20 yuan a month. It's just that Director Wang can be a bit clumsy at times, but you can usually tolerate it.
"Xiao Zhang, it's not that we're kicking you out, it's that we want you to go home and visit your family. We haven't given you a day off in a long time. We'll give you three days off. Go home first, and come back in three days."
Li Hongmei told Xiao Zhang what she said, and Xiao Zhang finally nodded with relief after hearing this. He then went back to his small room and packed some things.
I could pack up the two pieces of clothing that Li Hongmei gave me and take them home, thinking I could show them off in the village.
After sending Xiao Zhang away, Li Hongmei immediately went upstairs to her room to see if the mink coats she had her eye on were still there.
The moment she opened the wardrobe, she froze in place; her soon-to-be-worn mink coat was nowhere to be found.
Li Hongmei slumped onto the bed. Looking up, she realized the David sculpture she had seen the night before was gone. A wave of doubt washed over her; had she been sleepwalking last night?
She seemed somewhat dazed. Slowly, she stood up and walked to the spot where the sculpture had been from yesterday; it was indeed empty. The more she thought about it, the more frightened she became. Finally, unable to suppress her fear, she screamed out.
"ah!"
Upon hearing Li Hongmei's cry, Director Wang rushed over. Their daughter, Wang Yufen, who was still fast asleep, was also awakened by the noise. Hearing her mother's cry, she hurriedly put on a coat and ran over.
Director Wang saw that Li Hongmei's eyes were glazed over, her face filled with fear, as if she had been greatly frightened. Her mouth was trembling, and she was saying something incoherently.
He kept pointing. The place where he saw the David sculpture last night.
"There's a ghost. There's a ghost."
Hearing her say that, Director Wang felt a chill run down his spine. He instantly felt the room was eerie, and he told his daughter, Wang Yifen, to quickly help Li Hongmei outside.
"Yufen, quickly help your mother to your room."
It took Li Hongmei a while to recover.
“There was such a big sculpture there last night, a sculpture of a man…”
Li Hongmei recounted what she had seen the previous night in fits and starts.
After hearing his words, Director Wang was completely stunned. What was going on? A sculpture had stolen his home.
It was only then that their daughter, Wang Yufen, realized that something had been stolen from their home. "I think we should call the police. This must be some enemy agents causing trouble."
Director Wang shook his head. "How can we explain this? We can't tell anyone outside about the things we lost."
Wang Yufen's eyes darted around.
"Dad, you're usually so shrewd, how come you're so confused now? You're insisting that you lost documents. How can they possibly find out what else you lost?"
"Furthermore, based on my mother's description, I think this must have been done by wicked people. There is a cult in our area."
"I heard they kidnapped a lot of women, and I think it's most likely them."
Director Wang also knew that this cult was a branch of the White Lotus Sect, but it had long since disappeared under the crackdown, and the remaining members had all gone underground.
But they never operated within the county seat; they usually stayed in the countryside, where the mountains are high and the roads are long. Their influence still extends to many remote areas.
He couldn't believe that these people had become so bold as to commit crimes in the county town, and that they had immediately set their sights on him.
Director Wang thought about it more and more and felt that his daughter's words made sense. These people must be on the left bank, otherwise it would be inexplicable that they used some kind of sorcery or illusion.
Thinking about this, Director Wang realized that he couldn't help with the house now, so he decided to send his wife and daughter back to her parents' home while he went to work.
Li Hongwei had long wanted to leave this place; she always felt a vague sense of dread. Hearing Director Wang's arrangement, she quickly packed a few clothes and took her daughter back to her parents' home.
