Chapter 57 Finding Trouble with Jia Zhangshi

The Jia family's house was discovered in the middle courtyard of the Siheyuan (courtyard house).

I haven't seen Yi Zhonghai come out since this morning. I've been peering out the window, and my eyes are getting blurry from looking.

"No, go check on him. What if he dies in the house? If he does, no matter how many mouths you have, you won't be able to explain yourself."

Jia Zhangshi muttered to herself.

Qin Huairu, who was standing nearby, saw Jia Zhangshi leaning against the window, muttering to herself, and she was immediately annoyed. She then spoke up.

"Mom, what are you doing? You've been watching for two days now. What's so interesting about it? You haven't even offered to help take care of your grandson."

Qin Huairu's words made Jia Zhangshi very uncomfortable. She was about to lash out, but then she thought, "Isn't this a perfect opportunity?" She pretended to take the child to Yi Zhonghai's house to see what was going on.

Thinking of this, Jia Zhangshi stopped looking out the window and went to the child to say something.

“Okay, I’m free right now, so I’ll help you take care of the kids.”

After saying that, Jia Zhangshi picked up the stick and walked outside.

Seeing Jia Zhangshi take the child to play, Qin Huairu was confused. Was Jia Zhangshi really that easy to talk to? Shouldn't she have scolded me?

Qin Huairu was still pondering when Jia Zhangshi arrived at Yi Zhonghai's window.

Looking around, there was no one. Jia Zhangshi looked into the room through the window, but there was still no one there, though she couldn't see inside the room.

Undeterred, Jia Zhangshi arrived at the door, only to find it locked. She was relieved; as long as the old man with no descendants didn't die inside, it was fine.

With a weight lifted from her shoulders, Jia Zhangshi was about to go to the front yard to chat when a shout suddenly came from behind her.

"Jia Zhangshi, what are you doing, sneaking around and peeking through the door? Are you trying to steal something?"

The sudden noise startled Jia Zhangshi, and even the baby in her arms burst into tears.

Madam Jia was immediately enraged and turned around, intending to teach the newcomer a lesson, but upon seeing who it was, she instantly wilted.

Who else could it be but the deaf old lady standing behind her?

The deaf old lady had come today hoping to get some money from her 'godson,' but she ended up running into Jia Zhangshi, which led to the scene described above.

When Jia Zhangshi saw that it was a deaf old woman, her anger instantly subsided. It wasn't that she was afraid of her, but rather that she didn't want to get entangled with her.

The deaf old lady nowadays isn't a martyr's family member, nor is she the "ancestor" of the compound, so her speech isn't as effective.

The key is this old deaf woman. She pretends to be dead to extort money from people. If you fall for her tricks, she'll eat you out of house and home, and she always wants to eat the best food.

Thinking of all this, Madam Jia said in a bad tone.

"What? My dear grandson wants to come to his Grandpa Yi's house to play, but that's not allowed?"

As Jia Zhangshi spoke, she also used her hand to soothe the little stick.

"Hmph! Who do you think you are, Jia Zhangshi? Everyone in this compound knows. What are you pretending for? Who knows what kind of evil scheme you're plotting?"

The deaf old woman said dismissively.

"That's still better than you. All you've said is trying to scam some food and drink, right? Don't act so noble. Let me tell you, no one's home at Yi Zhonghai's today. If you want food, go somewhere else."

Jia Zhangshi's outburst made the deaf old lady sound like utter nonsense.

But what Jia Zhangshi said was also true. The deaf old lady didn't know how to refute it, so she resorted to her ultimate move, covering her ears with her hands and saying loudly.

"What? What did you say? I can't hear you. Did you say you wanted to treat me to dinner?"

Seeing the deaf old lady's actions, Jia Zhangshi said indignantly.

"It's that trick again. I'm not going to argue with you. You can wait here by yourself."

After Jia Zhangshi finished speaking, she wiggled her hips and walked towards the front yard.

Seeing that Jia Zhangshi had left, the deaf old lady glanced at the iron lock on the door and walked back to the backyard with no other choice.

The older women in the front yard were chatting, and when they saw Jia Zhangshi arrive, they didn't say anything.

Although there was a little unpleasantness recently, we're all in the same compound, and we see each other all the time. You can't just kick someone out when they come to visit.

One of the older women, seeing Jia Zhangshi come out again, joked.

"Jia Zhangshi, you still dare to stroll around like this? Aren't you afraid that old man will cause you trouble?"

"How could that be! Look, it's been two days already, and that old man hasn't said anything. It's all a misunderstanding."

Jia Zhangshi said smugly, her tone suggesting she didn't take it seriously at all.

Several middle-aged women agreed, saying that the old man hadn't said anything, so it wasn't their place to worry about it.

Just as the group was having a pleasant chat, Jia Zhangshi suddenly noticed that Yi Zhonghai and his wife had returned from a distance.

Moreover, the older woman was staring intently at her, and she immediately sensed something was wrong, so she said...

"You guys keep chatting, I have some things to take care of at home, so I'll head back now."

Before the women could react, Jia Zhangshi had already left.

Watching Jia Zhangshi leave in a hurry, the third aunt said curiously.

"Strange, what could be wrong with Jia Zhangshi? Why did she leave in such a hurry?"

It wasn't until Mr. and Mrs. Yi Zhonghai reached the door that everyone realized that Jia Zhangshi had run away in fright when she saw the troublemakers coming!

"Oh! Everyone's here?" an older woman said politely.

"The old lady is back. Look at that old man, he even went to pick her up himself. If it were our old Yan, you just wait."

The three aunties joked.

"No, no, it's perfect timing, I'm coming back too. If I don't come back soon, our Zhonghai will be bullied to death!"

Upon hearing this, the women realized the visitor was up to no good! As for who had bullied them? Everyone knew; they had just been chatting together.

Seeing that no one spoke up, the older woman spoke again.

"Alright, you guys chat for a while. I haven't been back for a long time, I need to go back and pack up."

"If you have something to do, go ahead and do it. Don't worry about us."

One of the older women said.

After Yi Zhonghai and his wife left, the three aunts said.

"This time, there's going to be a good show."

The other women nodded in agreement.

An older woman who had just returned home put down her things and ran to the Jia family's house across the street.

Upon arriving at the Jia family's house, they found the door closed from the inside. The older woman immediately became rude and started cursing.

"Jia Zhangshi, you old widow, you're taking advantage of my family while I'm not home, aren't you?"

You shameless bastard! You freeload off us, eat and drink at our house, and borrow money from us that you won't pay back.

You heartless bastard! Even a dog would be better than you! You're a complete ingrate! Get out here right now, or I'll tear your filthy mouth apart! You…”

The woman's cursing instantly attracted a crowd of onlookers.

Everyone was surprised to see that this middle-aged woman had quite the fighting power. They never expected that this usually honest and kind woman would have such a fierce side.

Knowing she was in the wrong, Jia Zhangshi, who was hiding inside the house, pretended to be a coward.

When Jia Zhangshi didn't come out, the old woman kept cursing. Seeing this, Yi Zhonghai, who was standing nearby, worried that the old woman would get thirsty, so he went back and brought her a large bowl of tea.

As evening approached, children were dismissed from school and workers gradually left work, attracting an increasing number of onlookers.

The entire intermediate court was overflowing with people!
