Chapter 8: Put the meat in front of you
"If you don't want to eat it, then don't eat it." Jiang Moli put the meat directly in front of her.
Jiang's mother had just placed the meat near Jiang Yuqin and her husband. Jiang Moli could reach it if she stretched her hand a little. Jiang Moli was not Jiang's mother, so she would not spoil Jiang Yuqin. If Jiang Yuqin didn't want to eat, then she didn't have to eat.
Jiang Yuqin obviously didn't expect Jiang Moli to take the meat away at this time. She thought that since Ding Chao was there, Jiang Moli would have to give him some face. Jiang Yuqin thought that Jiang's mother had just told Jiang Moli to be careful, but Jiang Moli still didn't pay attention.
"It tastes good." Jiang Moli said, "I like it."
Jiang Yuqin wanted to bring the plate of meat over, but she was afraid that Jiang Moli would grab it again, which would be really embarrassing. Jiang Yuqin looked at her father, hoping that he would say something to Jiang Moli.
However, Father Jiang didn't say anything to Jiang Moli, but said, "You guys should eat something else. Moli has to perform in the evening, and it's very tiring."
"Hard work?" Jiang Yuqin was unhappy. "Isn't our work hard?"
"Eat if you like it, and don't eat if you don't like it." Jiang Moli said, "You come to my house for dinner and you're so picky. If you're capable, cook for yourself. Don't let my mom cook for you."
Jiang Moli didn't give Jiang Yuqin face, even in front of Ding Chao, it was the same. Jiang Moli was not her mother, her mother still wanted to hold Jiang Yuqin a little, but Jiang Moli didn't do that.
In the past, Jiang Yuqin had bullied Jiang Moli and Jiang's mother. She always said outside that she was a stepdaughter and not Jiang's mother's biological child, and that Jiang's mother was not good enough to her. Jiang's mother wanted to save face, so she didn't really treat Jiang Yuqin too badly. But if it was Jiang Moli, Jiang Moli would directly treat Jiang Yuqin badly.
"you……"
"Eat, eat." Ding Chao picked up a piece of fish for Jiang Yuqin.
"This meat has too many bones." Jiang Yuqin said. She picked up the fish meat from the belly and gave it to Ding Chao. "The meat from the belly tastes better."
"Okay." Ding Chao didn't want Jiang Yuqin to continue making trouble. If she continued, Ding Chao would lose face.
Everyone knew that Jiang Yuqin had insisted on marrying Ding Chao despite her father's objections. Some people also felt that Ding Chao knew everything and deliberately got married to Jiang Yuqin. Yes, this was the truth, but Ding Chao didn't want others to know or say too much.
After Jiang Yuqin and her husband finished their meal, they didn't help wash the dishes; they just left. Well, not exactly. Jiang Yuqin even asked Ding Chao to go to her old room and take some of her belongings. Jiang's father still didn't like Ding Chao, but he finally accepted him as his son-in-law.
Jiang's father couldn't refuse to acknowledge Ding Chao as his son-in-law. Jiang Yuqin and Ding Chao were legally married, and this wasn't subject to Jiang's father's will. Jiang's father couldn't ask Jiang Yuqin to divorce or remarry.
After dinner, Jiang Moli did not clean up the dishes. Jiang's mother and father never let Jiang Moli do these things. They just wanted Jiang Moli to sing well.
Father Jiang sat on the sofa reading the newspaper, and Jiang Moli followed Mother Jiang to the kitchen.
"Mom, you're really hardworking. Dad hasn't even said anything yet, and you've already prepared everything." Jiang Moli said, "You even prepared a fish."
According to the customs of South City, having fish was a sign of approval for the son-in-law. Jiang's mother had prepared such a large table of dishes, but Ding Chao didn't take much. Jiang Yuqin would occasionally serve Ding Chao some food, mostly fish or meat.
Jiang Yuqin has always had that kind of temper. If there is delicious food on the table, Jiang Yuqin would like to put most of it into her bowl.
"It has to be prepared sooner or later." Jiang's mother said, "Why did you just put the meat in front of you? Aren't you afraid that your father will be unhappy?"
"Don't you still have me?" Jiang Moli raised her eyebrows. "If Dad is really unhappy, you can comfort him."
"Alas." Jiang's mother sighed, "I'm a stepmother, so I have to bow my head. As for you, you shouldn't bow your head too much..."
Jiang's mother didn't want her daughter to suffer too much injustice. She felt that her daughter was right. Jiang Yuqin was Jiang's father's biological daughter, and Jiang Moli was also Jiang's father's biological daughter.
"Well, I just won't bow my head." Jiang Moli said, "You can't bow your head to someone like her. If you bow your head, she will step on you."
In the past, Jiang Moli also tolerated Jiang Yuqin, but Jiang Yuqin did not know how to feel sorry for her sister at all. Jiang Yuqin would only step on Jiang Moli harshly. Jiang Moli had suffered too much, and she had grown up a lot now, so she would never tolerate Jiang Yuqin like before.
"Aren't you going to work?" asked Jiang's mother.
"I'll be there in a minute." Jiang Moli said, "Mom, I just checked Jiang Yuqin's room, and she took all the boxes away. She just borrowed a tricycle and took away a lot of things."
"Call me sister," Jiang's mother said. "You have to call me that in front of your father. If she wants to take those things away, then she can take them away. If she doesn't take them away, do you still want to use them?"
"I won't use anything she's used." Jiang Moli curled her lips. "How can her things be useful? If you haven't used her things, she will criticize others. If you use her things, she will criticize you even more."
Jiang Moli hadn't left for work yet when Mrs. Jiang came. Mrs. Jiang already knew that Jiang Yuqin had gotten married to Ding Chao despite her family's objections, and her face was not good.
"She acted like she didn't want the money. It was so embarrassing." When Mrs. Jiang arrived home and saw Jiang's father sitting in the living room, she started to say, "I'm embarrassed to talk about this when others tell me about it."
Father Jiang was like a quail, he didn't dare to say much.
"Mom." Jiang's mother poured out some tea.
Mrs. Jiang came over after dinner. She didn't want others to say that she had to come to her second son's house for a meal. Mrs. Jiang didn't miss that meal. It would be the same if she ate at home.
"You too, are you hoping that she will get married soon?" Old Mrs. Jiang had a stern face with many wrinkles, looking very fierce.
"I...this..." Jiang's mother did want Jiang Yuqin to get married as soon as possible, but Jiang Yuqin really didn't steal the household registration book from her.
"Grandma, grandma." Jiang Moli trotted over to Old Lady Jiang and took her hand. "Grandma, I'm going to a performance tonight. Do you want to go? I asked my parents to go, and they said I've performed more than once. These two tickets are still here."
Jiang Moli took out the ticket and waved it in front of Old Lady Jiang, "Grandma, please go and support me."
"My dear, are you going to perform again?" said Old Mrs. Jiang.
"Well, I'm not playing a maid this time." Jiang Moli said.
"If you give me the tickets, what will happen to your parents?" Old Mrs. Jiang felt sorry for Jiang Moli. Jiang Moli was sweet-mouthed and beautiful.
"They'll go see it next time," Jiang Moli said. "We're not just going to perform once. I don't think they'll be in the mood to watch it today. My sister and brother-in-law came this morning and brought two bottles of white wine and some apples. Look, these apples on the table are them."
The apples on the table are not big, and the skin is not very red, but a little green.
"You're just giving me a half-green, half-red apple like this, and it's so small?" Old Mrs. Jiang said disdainfully, "Your sister is such a petty person. She's always been like this since she was little."
"You came a little late. If you had come earlier, you could have seen my sister and brother-in-law clearing out the room." Jiang Moli said.
"Jasmine." Jiang's mother signaled Jiang Moli not to say anything.
Jiang Moli still had to say that she felt her mother was a stepmother, so her mother had to stop her to avoid upsetting the Jiang family. Jiang Moli was not afraid, because her last name was Jiang and she was her father's biological daughter.
"Grandma, do you want to take a look?" Jiang Moli took Old Madam Jiang to see Jiang Yuqin's room. "Last time, when she went there with the quilt, the door was still locked. This time, she wanted to lock the door, but my brother-in-law didn't let her. My brother-in-law should have some dignity. If he doesn't, I will definitely let him live at home."
Ding Chao is not a live-in son-in-law, and Jiang's father would never let Ding Chao and Jiang Yuqin live at home. This is what Jiang Moli said.
"If they really dare to live here, tell grandma and I will kick them out," said Old Mrs. Jiang.
Jiang Moli coaxed Mrs. Jiang, and when Mrs. Jiang was about to go back, Jiang Moli went with her. When Jiang's mother saw that Mrs. Jiang had left, she breathed a sigh of relief. Mrs. Jiang was not a person with a good temper, and Jiang's mother was still a little afraid of her.
"Moli's temper is just like that. When she was little, she was tricked by her sister so many times that she's unwilling to give in anymore." Jiang's mother said, "She's grown up now. Alas, Moli... don't blame Moli."
Jiang's mother was afraid that Jiang's father would blame Jiang Moli, because Jiang Yuqin was Jiang's father's first child after all.
"Moli is right," said Jiang's father. He suspected that Jiang Yuqin and her husband came here today just for the things in the room. Jiang's father was hurt by Jiang Yuqin and felt cold. He thought he was very good to Jiang Yuqin and sometimes even let Jiang Moli suffer. But Jiang Yuqin was still not satisfied. "In other families, the older ones give way to the younger ones. In our family, the younger ones give way to the older ones. Don't always let Moli give way to Yuqin. Mom has said it before, Moli is my biological daughter, not an adopted child."
Mrs. Jiang's words were not so gentle. Her words were much harsher. She meant that Jiang Yuqin's biological mother ran away with another man. Who knows if Jiang Yuqin is actually a child of the Jiang family? Even if Jiang Yuqin is a child of the Jiang family, she is a bad child. When Mrs. Jiang met Jiang Moli, she also told Jiang Moli not to give in to Jiang Yuqin and not to listen to her mother's words and give in to Jiang Yuqin.
"Someone has to give in at home to reduce conflicts and ease relationships," said Jiang's mother. She just had to say a few words, as long as her daughter didn't give in too much to Jiang Yuqin. If her daughter gave in too much to Jiang Yuqin, Jiang's mother would also feel distressed.
"It's hard for you." Jiang's father said. He didn't know how to respond to what Mrs. Jiang said just now. Fortunately, Jiang Moli knew how to coax Mrs. Jiang. Jiang Moli said a few words, and Mrs. Jiang was happy and didn't say anything else.
"We're a family," Jiang's mother said. "Don't worry about it."
Jiang's father nodded slightly. He liked his wife's personality and her ability to keep the household in good order. As for Jiang Yuqin always feeling bad about her mother, Jiang's father thought Jiang Yuqin was just too picky. A stepmother is still a stepmother, and you can't expect her to be the same as your biological mother. Once, Jiang's father wanted Jiang Yuqin to stay with her mother, but Jiang Yuqin refused to stay with her biological mother for a few days and insisted on coming back.
A love-brained person finally got to be with her beloved, but why would that person want to bring Jiang Yuqin, a burden, along? She really wanted Jiang Yuqin to get out of here. She couldn't say that she didn't want the child to stay with her, so she said that if the child didn't go to her biological father's house, then the stepmother would take over those things. Jiang Yuqin could sense her biological mother's dislike for her. Her biological mother didn't want her to appear in front of her stepfather too often. Jiang Yuqin also thought about the good days she had in Jiang's father's house, so of course she had to go back.
When others saw Jiang Yuqin and her husband returning to her parents' home and bringing back a lot of things, they even asked with a smile, "Does your family accept this marriage?"
"The things in my room were all things I used myself," Jiang Yuqin replied. She couldn't let others think that these were gifts from the Jiang family. These were clearly her own things, things she deserved. "I married into this family, so naturally I have to bring them with me!"
