"Yes, the government is probably developing it now, but the results aren't as good as in Hong Kong. Several medicinal herbs are no longer available because of the apocalypse."
"I know that. When Zheng Ming told me, I told my whole family. We absolutely can't tell anyone," Old Zheng quickly replied.
Old Zheng was a businessman after all, and he knew the seriousness of the situation. Xu Lin didn't say much, and left it at that.
"By the way, Uncle Zheng, I remember Wang Jing said that your department has been losing things a lot lately, right?" Xu Lin asked again.
"Yes, compressed biscuits, canned meat, dehydrated vegetables, mineral water, toothpaste and toothbrushes, everything goes missing." Old Zheng gets angry whenever he talks about it. After all, he is the team leader, and losing things is his dereliction of duty.
“We overheard someone say he works for the supply department. They’ve been cracking down on this lately, so his theft might be discovered.” Xu Lin decided to lend Lao Zheng a hand.
"Is he a very tall guy?" Old Zheng asked.
"Yes, you know?"
“He is a member of our team and always works the hardest. At first, we didn’t suspect him until one time when he was on duty and the person on duty with him took the day off and lost something. That’s when we started to suspect him. After that, several times things were lost while he was on duty. The probability was too high. There are no surveillance cameras now, so catching the insider will take time.”
"That's fine with you. We'll be going now."
They politely declined Lao Zheng's offer to stay for dinner and headed home.
“Dr. Dai works at the hospital, so she must know what’s going on. I won’t go looking for her,” Zhou Pin said.
"I want to go see Xiang Qing."
After leaving Zheng Ming's house, the two went to Dr. Dai's house. Xu Lin took out a handful of chives she had cut in the yard yesterday and twenty eggs from her spatial storage. Xiang Qing and Dr. Dai were both there.
"You're here, why did you bring anything?" Dr. Dai scolded playfully.
"It's not for you, it's for Xiao Qingqing," Xu Lin said, stroking Xiang Qing's head.
"Thank you, Sister Lin!"
"You've come at the perfect time! We were just about to make dumplings for lunch, let's join in!" Dr. Dai said as he chopped the meat.
"That's great, perfect for adding chive filling."
Xu Lin sat in the living room picking chives and chatting with Dr. Dai, while Zhou Pin tutored Xiang Qing.
"Have you had any headaches or fevers lately?" Dr. Dai asked, his professional instincts kicking in.
"No, everything is fine. Is the hospital busy?"
"It's not busy now, but there are fights every day over supplies, and there are no medical supplies at the hospital."
"Will this kind of base provide funding?"
"Yes, we can pay for medical expenses with our labor. Once we're healed, we can go to the construction site. Right now, we need more people."
"That's a good idea."
"Although meals are provided, the work is really tiring. I got some anti-inflammatory medicine from the hospital; you can take it with you later."
"No need, we're perfectly healthy. Our bodies can handle minor illnesses, and there are effective treatments for serious illnesses!"
"Now that you mention it, I remember. The special medicine must be carefully preserved and should not be used unless absolutely necessary. Also, do not tell anyone."
"What's wrong?" Xu Lin pretended to know nothing.
"I once overheard the hospital director say that the special medicine in Gangcheng is the best so far, and the batch being developed at the base only has half the efficacy of Gangcheng's special medicine because of a lack of medicinal materials."
“I understand, Dr. Dai. None of us have told you. I heard about it today, and I just went to Zheng Ming’s house to talk to Uncle Zheng.”
"You are all sensible people,"
After having dinner at Dr. Dai's house, Xu Lin and Zhou Pincai went home, bringing with them the leeks and garlic sprouts that Xiang Qing and Dr. Dai had grown.
