People were already living near the sea, and Xu Lin didn't want to attract too much attention, so she asked Zhou Pin to find a secluded spot to park.
The two of them didn't get out of the car. They chased the dogs to the front row and went to the back row to set up a small table and start eating.
When out and about, one should keep a low profile. Xu Lin brought rice balls and regular dog food for the dogs, which made Shuke whine.
"So many people are starving, you should be grateful to have dog food to eat. You've been spoiled rotten. It seems I'll have to make you remember the bitterness of the past from time to time."
Xu Lin secretly decided to change the dogs' diet every three or four days, so they wouldn't become picky eaters.
After finishing their meal, the two changed their clothes and went downstairs for a stroll. They were surprised to find a small market there, where the trade was done through barter. Most of the stalls sold seafood, but each stall had a small quantity, probably due to limited fishing quotas.
Xu Lin inquired and found out that one pound of broken rice or soaked rice could be exchanged for 20 pounds of scallops or mussels, and better quality rice could be exchanged for even more.
Most of the people here have gone to the base. Only a few are reluctant to leave their homeland and make a living by fishing. Fortunately, they are used to eating seafood since they were young, otherwise they would be sick of it.
Xu Lin traded one pound of soaked rice for three pounds of scallops, two pounds of mussels, two pounds of clams, and four pounds of oysters from an old lady's stall. She planned to cook the seafood in the car later. The old lady also gave her a piece of dried seaweed.
Due to the limited availability of boats, the seafood sold at the market consisted of only a few types: mussels, scallops, whelks, clams, oysters, kelp, and so on. Some stalls might have a sea cucumber or abalone mixed in, but Xu Lin wasn't interested. She figured she could have as much as she wanted once she got to the sea.
“Let’s open a seafood restaurant when we get back to the base, but I don’t know if it will be convenient,” Xu Lin suddenly said as they walked to the car.
“Okay, leave it to me,” Zhou Pin replied.
"Aren't you going to ask me why I had this idea?"
“You like seafood, and buying seafood from them can also help the people here. You don’t have to stay at home every day to do business, and it also allows the people at the base to eat fresh seafood. It’s a win-win situation,” Zhou Pin said, listing them off one by one.
"Alright, I'll leave the negotiations with the authorities to you." Xu Lin opened the car door, pretending to take a pot out of the car, but actually taking it out of her spatial storage.
Seafood should be eaten in its original flavor, so Zhou Pin simply washed the seafood, poured it into a pot, added water, and started cooking.
There's a sea nearby, and the locals are so tired of eating seafood that they don't worry about attracting unwanted attention when they cook it outdoors.
Twenty minutes later, the seafood was ready, and Xu Lin and Zhou Pin immediately sat around the pot and started eating.
"You say selling seafood is such a good business, why isn't anyone at the base doing it?" Xu Lin asked.
“Some people do it, but their target customer group isn’t the average person. Besides, the insect infestation has caused serious damage, so they don’t have the energy to do business in Jinshi,” Zhou Pin analyzed.
"That makes sense. Seafood should be eaten fresh in its place of origin. After eating this, I suddenly realized that the processed seafood in the room wasn't fresh anymore."
"From now on, you'll be the top seafood lady at the base, and you can eat whatever you want."
"Thank you for your kind words."
After listening to Zhou Pin's analysis, Xu Lin felt relieved and enjoyed the seafood even more. After finishing the seafood, the two packed up and prepared to go to the beach.
The dogs were temporarily stored away in the space, which was a bit cumbersome.
Dog: This isn't the time when we needed them; they've used us and now they're discarding us!
