The two finished cleaning up in an afternoon. The area near the dock exit was left uncleaned and had been turned into a trap. They decided to handle it this way for now and improve it later.
Traps were also set up near the sea to prevent others from "smuggling" themselves like them.
The rest is building a home, which can't be rushed. The two went into the space to eat and discuss building a house.
Xu Lin wanted to build two wooden houses, one on the ground for the two of them to live in, and one in a tree to observe enemy movements, mainly to fulfill her childhood dream.
Xu Lin found relevant books in the space and began to study them. Finally, she summarized that a perfect log cabin requires the following steps. The first is the foundation. The foundation is a necessary condition for every building. There are generally four types of foundation construction for log cabins: flat ground foundation, sloping ground foundation, steel frame structure, and concrete I-beam structure. The simplest is the flat ground foundation. The construction method is to lay a 20-centimeter-thick layer of cement, and then apply moisture-proof material. This is the general procedure. The foundation is relatively simple.
Once the foundation has solidified, we can start building with wood. Xu Lin remembers that there are materials for building a wooden house in the space.
It seems that each piece of wood has a corresponding number and simple steps. Once you can figure out which piece of wood corresponds to which diagram, you can assemble it very easily. As long as you find the method, you can assemble it directly, just like a child playing with building blocks.
Building the roof is arguably the most difficult part of constructing a log cabin, mainly because it's challenging and requires extra caution. To ensure leak prevention, the construction of inside and outside corners involves several steps, including attaching the wooden frame to the insulation, and conducting a rain test after the roof tiles are installed.
Once the roof is finished, you can start painting. The paint color must be even; it's best to do this on a sunny day to ensure a consistent color and avoid color variations. Once the painting is complete, the basic construction work on the house is considered finished.
If you're building a log cabin in a tree, you need to find a suitable tree to lay the foundation for the house, just as you need to find a suitable tree for a treehouse. Ideally, the tree should be lush, healthy, and free of pests. A large banyan tree is quite suitable (actually, my ideal tree is the one Totoro lives in). Then, based on the shape of the trunk, you can design the initial style and layout of the cabin, one room is sufficient. A height of 3-5 meters above the ground is enough; try to build it according to the shape of the tree, this is very important.
The tools mainly include ladders, axes, saws, knives, wire, nails, planks, wooden strips, ropes, plastic sheeting, etc.
First, install a pulley system on the tree for hoisting materials and components. On the ground, depending on the size of the cabin, make several large components using planks, strips, and other materials, such as floorboards, roof, side panels, doors, and windows, and then hoist them up the tree for assembly.
Following the bottom-up principle, install the floor slabs first, then the side panels, doors and windows, and finally the roof. A sloping roof is recommended, with the surface treated with plastic sheeting, and the roof slightly longer than the side panels to facilitate rainwater drainage.
When assembling, the floorboards should be placed on at least two tree trunks, and the side panels should be positioned as close to the floorboards as possible. A door doesn't necessarily need to be a door leaf; curtains or leaves can be used as substitutes.
After assembling the main components, secure them with wire, nails, and rope. Finally, decorate the interior according to your own preferences; this is Xu Lin's favorite step, and she can do it slowly later.
