In the morning, Xu Lin only let Shuke and Beta out; the wolf cubs were too young to climb the mountain on their own.
Shuke and Beta ran away as soon as they appeared, probably hoping to find other pets.
Xu Lin's inner thoughts: Please don't pick up any more animals, and if you do, please don't pick up any cubs.
The night before last, Xu Lin and Zhou Pin got up twice to feed the cubs. Originally, Zhou Pin wanted Xu Lin to rest and he would feed them himself, but both of them insisted on drinking at the same time, otherwise the other one would cry loudly, as if it had been abandoned by the whole world.
There was no other way, so Xu Lin had to feed him together with Zhou Pin, which resulted in neither of them getting a good night's rest the previous night.
That day, the two climbed all day and finally reached the summit. Standing on a protruding rock at the top, they looked down and indeed had a feeling of being on top of the world.
Surprisingly, there were obvious signs of human activity on the other side of the mountain, and the mountain was clearly bare, in stark contrast to the lush vegetation on this side.
Xu Lin took out two binoculars and observed the surroundings with Zhou Pin.
There should be a village clustered in the mountains. Xu Lin saw several wooden houses and some plants, but they were too far away to see what they were growing.
"Let's change our clothes and go downstairs to take a look," Xu Lin said.
You need to know who your neighbors are before you can decide whether or not to stay.
The two went into the space to change into more worn-out clothes and came down the mountain path. The first thing they encountered was a little girl picking wild vegetables.
Xu Lin took advantage of her gender and went forward to greet them.
"Little sister, we've come here as refugees. Do you live here?" Xu Lin asked, putting on what she thought was a very kind expression.
The little girl, who was about 1.2 meters tall when she stood up, nodded somewhat awkwardly.
"Are your parents home? I have some honey here and would like to exchange it for some grain with your family."
The little girl pointed to a house in the distance, which must be her home. Xu Lin and Zhou Pin followed the little girl toward the wooden house.
The wooden house was surrounded by a fence. A woman was watering plants inside the fence. When she saw the girl come in, she said, "Xiaoyu is back? Are there not many wild vegetables?"
Upon seeing Xu Lin and Zhou Pin behind Xiao Yu, they instantly became vigilant.
"Who are you? What are you doing here?"
"Don't panic, sister. We're just passing through here as refugees and we'd like to exchange some food."
"Where did you come from? Where are you going now?"
“We came from the other side of the mountain? We were planning to settle down on the other side, but we’re running low on food and wanted to come and trade with you for some,” Xu Lin said.
"You came from the other side of the mountain?" the woman asked, her voice trembling with emotion. The little girl snuggled into the woman's arms.
"Is there a problem?" Xu Lin was a little puzzled as to why they were so excited to hear that they had come from the other side of the mountain.
“There are wolves on the other side of the mountain, didn’t you see them? A pack of wolves!” the woman said.
"No, we just arrived two days ago, the house hasn't been built yet." Xu Lin thought of the two little white wolves, could they be ungrateful wretches?
"You're probably lucky you didn't encounter any. There's a pack of wolves on the mountain, guarding the summit and preventing people from this side from passing. What do you want to exchange? Once you're done, hurry up and leave, lest you attract the wolves." It was clear the woman was very afraid of wolves.
"We want to trade honey for some food." Xu Lin wanted to see the dietary standards of the people on this side of the mountain to prevent them from robbing others if they became too hungry.
"We have rice, wheat, corn, sweet potatoes, potatoes, yams, soybeans, red beans, and mung beans. What would you like to exchange them for?"
