After the volcanic eruption, Xu Lin and Zhou Pin became noticeably quieter as they traveled. If there were survivors in the earlier disasters, the area affected by the volcanic eruption would be completely barren.
The roadside vegetation was withered, and occasionally they would get out of the car to collect any saplings or plants that Xu Lin had never seen before.
The survivors they encountered along the way were all numbly hurrying on their way, emaciated and withered.
Robberies are common, some for food, some for women, and some simply because people don't like the other person.
People's minds began to become distorted. Survivors on the road would chase after Xu Lin and her group's car and try to make them stop.
People with children would bring their kids out hoping Xu Lin and the others would take them in or give them some food.
The two usually ignore it, but they will throw stones or yell at the child, and some will even punch and kick the child.
There are too many refugees; we can only save them temporarily, not forever. We can only hope that they can make it to the base alive.
After traveling for more than half a month, we finally got close to the Northwest Base.
Occasionally, a car would appear on the road, and hope would appear on the faces of the refugees.
Xu Lin and her group's vehicle was quite conspicuous, after all, it was carrying a shipping container.
That noon, the two were driving near a highway and were very excited to see the smooth road.
Since the apocalypse, roads have been destroyed, and it's been a long time since I've seen such a smooth road, which means we're about to reach the base.
There was a stall by the roadside that collected supplies, so Xu Lin stopped her car and went over to inquire.
"Hello, are you here to exchange supplies?" the other person asked politely as Xu Lin got out of the car.
Owning a car now, while not making him a billionaire, puts him close, so the other party was very polite. Of course, Xu Lin hadn't missed his earlier rudeness in driving away refugees.
"How much does it cost if I change some water?" Xu Lin asked.
"You're from outside, going to the base, right? I can exchange points or supplies for it." The man immediately perked up; this was a big spender.
"integral?"
"It's points from the Northwest Base, but you outsiders obviously don't have any. I'm a kind person, we're all compatriots, so I'll give you a fair price by exchanging supplies." The man said sincerely.
Merchants' mouths are often deceitful. But when they have something to ask, they don't care too much.
“We are indeed from outside. I have a pound of broken rice here. How much water can I exchange for it?” Xu Lin took out a pound of broken rice from her bag.
"You still have rice? Although rice is quite valuable to you, the base has been growing it on a large scale for a long time, so it's not anything special. I'll give you half a liter of water for the sake of our compatriots, but you'll have to prepare your own containers."
Even if the refugees from outside were in good condition, they were reluctant to exchange rice for supplies. Xu Lin deliberately took out some broken rice to test the man's reaction.
Xu Lin took out a mineral water bottle, filled it with water, and then asked the man for more information.
"Big brother, how far is the base from here? Can we get there today? It's already noon." Xu Lin screwed the bottle cap back on and put it in her backpack.
"Yes, yes, it's only 10 kilometers away. You can find Liang Meili at window number 2 if you want to rent or buy a house at the base." The stall owner was trying his best to promote his business.
"Oh, I've got it. You can buy or rent houses at the base?" Xu Lin feigned surprise.
"Sure, the service hall is right inside the base. Get your ID first, and there are places to buy things, rent things, and exchange points. You can take a look around." Since no one came to buy anything, the older brother chatted with Xu Lin since he was just idling around anyway.
