Xu Lin thought to herself, thankfully they hadn't started construction yet, otherwise the dog urine everywhere would be enough to drive them crazy.
The dog is back, and the whole family is together. Next up is the renovation. After lunch, everyone gathered in the yard.
Xu Lin emphasized to the dogs that they were not allowed to urinate or defecate anywhere before letting them run around freely.
The first step in the renovation was, of course, security. The villa gate was quite sturdy, but Zhou Pin still decided to reinforce it and then put an electric fence over the entire yard.
Zhou Pin was in charge of security, while Xu Lin took over the planting and breeding business. They couldn't take out any of the machines from the space; all they could use were the most primitive picks and shovels.
For several days in a row, the two of them were busy with security, planting, and animal husbandry in the yard, while the dogs started to run outside after they got used to their new home.
When neighbors pass by, they linger at the door to look at their "net of heaven and earth." Some are disdainful, some begin to ponder, and some even go up to ask where they found the electric fence, wanting to install one themselves.
When others approached them out of curiosity or jealousy, Xu Lin and Zhou Pin didn't refuse. They simply responded, saying what they could and laughing off what they couldn't, and no one pressed them for details. After so long in the apocalypse, most people had developed a sense of propriety; after all, those who lacked it had been eliminated.
A week later, the new house was renovated. To call it a renovation was really just planting vegetables in the yard, laying flooring and wallpaper on the second floor, and leaving the rest largely untouched.
That day, the two were watering the newly planted vegetables in the yard when Zhou Pin's communicator, which he had placed on the yard steps, rang. Zhou Pin put down the water ladle to answer the phone.
He returned a while later with mixed feelings of joy and sorrow.
"What's wrong?" Xu Lin asked.
"Sun Wei and the others have arrived," Zhou Pin said.
"That's good news! Why are you looking so worried? When did they arrive? Where are they now? Let's go see them!" Xu Lin put down the water ladle and pulled Zhou Pin to leave.
“We’ll take some medicine with us to Minister Sun,” Zhou Pin said.
"What happened? Who's hurt?" Xu Lin asked anxiously.
All three were injured.
The two quickly went inside, retrieved the medicine from their spatial storage, and drove to Minister Sun's house.
Government staff have free dormitories, and Minister Sun, being a loner, lives in one of them.
Ordinary staff members are assigned to double rooms like student dormitories, but Minister Sun, at his level, was assigned a one-bedroom apartment.
When Xu Lin and the others entered the house, Sun Wei was lying on a makeshift bed in the living room. They didn't see Grandma Wu or Li Jingjing.
Xu Lin went to the bedroom and saw Grandma Wu and Li Jingjing lying on the bed, not knowing whether they were asleep or unconscious.
As soon as I gently closed the bedroom door, I heard Sun Wei talking about their experiences on the road.
They traveled westward from the northern province, witnessing the moral decay and distorted willfulness of the post-apocalyptic world. Some even pretended to be victims to gain sympathy. They leveled up along the way, overcoming challenges along the way.
Unexpectedly, the accident occurred in a small county in Shanxi Province.
They set up camp on a flat area to rest for a day. Sun Wei went out to scout the terrain and go hunting, while Li Jingjing and Grandma Wu prepared dinner and pitched the tent.
Not far from them was a group of organized and disciplined vagrants who specialized in robbing survivors on the road. Their methods were extremely cruel. When Sun Wei spotted them, he immediately rushed back, preparing to take Wu Laotai and Li Jingjing away.
He didn't think about eliminating harm for the people. In this degenerate age, it's already difficult enough to protect oneself and one's family. When one is successful, one should help others; when one is unsuccessful, one should cultivate one's own virtue.
