Some book lovers stood directly in front of the bookshelves to browse or found a seat to read, while others who came to join in the fun also joined in reading because of the many books in the store.
A notice was posted at the entrance of the store, which roughly introduced the various procedures of the bookstore and the discounts for purchasing a membership card.
"I haven't read a book in many years. I didn't think much of it when I had a mobile phone and computer, but now that I have neither, I suddenly feel a sense of familiarity with books."
"There are even books on farming here!"
"This machine is pretty good!"
"I can take this educational toddler home for my daughter to see."
"I want one too!"
"I saw it first!"
The store was bustling with noise.
There were only two copies of some books, and the two of them got into an argument because they both wanted to read them.
Xu Lin had to pull up a stool and stand up to tell everyone that only the books on the left shelf in the store were for sale; the rest were for rent only. If you wanted a book, you could buy paper at the counter to borrow it and copy it at home, and then return the book after you finished copying it.
Everyone thought that since it was the end of the world, if they bought the books and went back home, they might not be able to keep them if they had to flee again someday. It would be much more cost-effective to rent them when they wanted to read them.
If you read frequently, it's more cost-effective to get a library card, so I took my favorite books to the counter to get a library card and then rented books.
Li Jingjing and Xie Yao were busy at the counter renting books, registering customer information (using an ID card reader provided by Zhou Pin), and scanning the barcodes on the books.
The two sisters brought by Xie Yao moved around in front of the bookshelves to maintain order.
Xu Lin then received the delegation led by the Vice Minister of Culture who had spoken with her earlier.
They first took a walk around the first floor, where there were quite a lot of people, so Xu Lin led them to the second floor.
"The second floor is also very spacious, why aren't there any bookshelves?" one of them asked.
"I'm planning a second phase project here, and based on customer feedback, I'll add a bookstore or a small tea room, something a bit artsy,"
"Okay, I'm feeling like I don't have any entertainment after get off work, so I'll get a membership card then."
Xu Lin subtly promoted her second-floor apartment.
After a quick lunch, the group went back to their respective tasks, and the bookshelf was already half empty.
Fortunately, the bookstore has a rule that you can borrow a maximum of two books at a time, otherwise the bookstore would probably be empty.
Many people who rushed over after hearing the news regretted not coming sooner, as the books were almost gone. However, after browsing the books on the shelves, they also took the books to apply for membership cards.
There were fewer people in the afternoon, so Xu Lin asked Xie Yao to take her girlfriends back to rest. She said they were very grateful to her for the day, and gave each of them a membership card, welcoming them to come often.
Xu Lin and Li Jingjing stayed until Zhou Pin and Sun Wei came over after get off work. The two of them took their tools and cleaned up the area, and then the four of them left together.
Because everything is done online, Xu Lin can see the business situation simply by opening the software at home.
Dinner was taken from the space. After eating, Xu Lin turned on the computer, and Zhou Pin stood next to her and gave her a massage.
"A total of 2,208 people applied for library cards today, and each person can borrow two books. This is beyond my expectations," Xu Lin said, looking at the computer.
“My wife is really amazing, but there probably aren’t many books left in the store!” Zhou Pin said.
“It’s okay, we’ll take some books from our space tomorrow. We already said we’d collected some ourselves, so it’s not surprising to bring them out now. We can’t let my bookstore close down after only one day of operation.” Xu Lin said, writing as she took out a pen and paper.
After checking on the business situation, the two went to bed early, as they would be busy in the first few days after opening.
