Chapter 360 Building a New Home

The four people that Minister Sun found had worked on construction sites before the apocalypse. When they heard that they could work here, they would not only be provided with lunch, but also receive half a pound of coarse grains every day. How could they not be tempted?

The four of them knew exactly what to do as soon as they saw Xu Lin's blueprints, and they also offered many constructive suggestions, which Xu Lin accepted, except that they should build the house first and then the fence.

What a joke! All the building materials were stored in Xu Lin's space. If we build the house first, wouldn't we expose ourselves if someone passed by?

Following the division of labor agreed upon on the way, Grandma Wu looked after Xiao Youyou. Now that she could walk while holding onto things, she couldn't be put in a stroller anymore and needed someone to watch over her at all times.

Zhou Pin, Sun Wei, and Minister Sun led their men to build the wall first. Although they chose a location far from the base, they couldn't guarantee that no one would come by. If they saw something they shouldn't have, it would be a loss.

Xu Lin and Li Jingjing were responsible for cooking and scattering thorn seeds near the wall. Xu Lin took the seeds from her spatial dimension, explaining that she had collected them along the way, and no one questioned her about it.

Thorns are highly adaptable to their environment, forming a natural protective barrier that is generally inaccessible to outsiders. With the added protection of Shuke and Beta, their living quarters are likely even more secure than those of the base leaders.

Sun Wei and Zhou Pin led two people to cut down the nearby trees and drag them back. Minister Sun led two people to dig pits every three meters around the perimeter of their enclosed territory, buried the tree stumps in them, and strung barbed wire between the stumps. Once everything was completed, electricity could be supplied.

Xu Lin decided to plant trees near the fence to block the view. Although the people at the base had been told not to approach their camp at will, there was no guarantee that there wouldn't be any unruly people around.

Further into the forest lies their farming area. They bought many seeds before the apocalypse and collected quite a few more over the years, all of which can be planted.

They also planned a breeding area, storage room, tool shed, garage...

But before that, they need to build their houses.

Many hands make light work. Despite the considerable workload, the outer fence was completed in seven days thanks to everyone's efforts. Bamboo was also moved and planted inside the fence, and Sun Wei and Zhou Pin connected the electricity, which gave them a greater sense of security.

Because the building materials had to be obtained from the space, Xu Lin settled the food payment for the four men and sent them home after the foundation was dug. Fortunately, Minister Sun had some knowledge of construction, and Xu Lin provided additional information. In the past few days, they also consulted with the four bricklayers about building precautions; otherwise, their house wouldn't have been able to be built.

After the foundation was dug, Minister Sun was still talking about the materials needed during dinner that night. Xu Lin kept it in mind and had Shuke and Beta patrol the perimeter that night, not allowing anyone to approach the camp. Then she took out the materials that Minister Sun had mentioned and placed them on the open ground.

Sun Wei and the others had gotten used to the occasional fresh food that Xu Lin brought out, but they were still quite shocked when they woke up to see the building materials piled up in the yard.

With Shuke and Beta patrolling, they could build houses in peace, but the number of people was limited. It took them more than ten days to build two habitable houses, which were still just frames and needed to be filled in gradually.

Knowing that Xu Lin had a secret, Sun Wei and the others had no intention of prying into it. Therefore, their two houses were about ten meters apart, and Xu Lin and Li Jingjing planted a bamboo fence on their own land while they were building their house.

Inside the fence is our home, and outside the fence is the camp that we all need to protect together.
