Chapter 40 Coping with Extreme Cold

"I can eat it, I'm not picky," Zhou Pin said indifferently. "It's gotten colder these past few days, have you prepared all your warm clothing?"

"Everything's out, all set," Xu Lin said confidently.

"You can turn on the underfloor heating tonight and heat it up slowly," Zhou Pin carefully instructed.

"Hmm, do you have enough fuel over there?"

"That's enough. Come to my place tomorrow and we'll make dumplings."

"Okay, your side is spacious."

The two ate and chatted as they ate, and as they were nearing the end, someone knocked on the door.

"Who is it?" Xu Lin asked from behind the door.

"Do you eat hot pot at home? Could you give us some? My grandson hasn't eaten vegetables for days."

"It's not my fault that your grandson has no vegetables to eat."

"We live in the same building, and you have no sense of public decency at all. We can't even get a meal, and you're eating hot pot at home." The old lady was very angry.

"We're out of food too. We only have one piece of hot pot broth left, so we'll use it to cook instant noodles."

"I don't believe you. Open the door and let me in to see." The old lady pressed her advantage.

"You can come and go as you please in my house. Do you think these three doors are just for show?" After saying that, Xu Lin closed the other two doors and went inside to continue eating.

"Open the door!"

"So young and yet they don't know how to respect the elderly and care for the young; all their knowledge has gone to waste!"

No matter how much the shouting went on outside, Xu Lin ignored it. After half an hour, the old lady saw that Xu Lin couldn't open the door and got tired of shouting, so she left.

"She probably won't let this go easily, so be careful," Zhou Pin said.

"I know." Xu Lin knew all too well what kind of person this was like.

After Zhou Pin finished washing the dishes, he went home. Xu Lin turned on the underfloor heating, but since there were people living downstairs, she didn't dare to heat it too much.

The kang (heated brick bed) that was previously placed in the second bedroom also came in handy. Xu Lin originally wanted to place it in the master bedroom, but the kang installer took a look and said that placing it in the second bedroom would allow for a stove in the kitchen, which could be used to steam buns and cook elaborate dishes, and it could also provide heating for the kang, killing two birds with one stone.

Xu Lin is very grateful for her master's suggestion; she can use this earthen stove to steam buns and mantou tomorrow.

I went to bed early that night, and the next day after breakfast, I took the dog to Zhou Pin's house to make steamed buns.

As soon as she entered the door, she discussed with Zhou Pin that she would take care of the two little ones' food from now on, and Zhou Pin would definitely have no objection.

"We haven't named them yet!" Xu Lin suddenly remembered that she was so shocked by the car that she forgot to name them.

"It's settled then, you can get it."

"How about we name the bigger one Shuke and the smaller one Beta?" Xu Lin said after thinking for a while.

"Can."

Xu Lin then turned to the two little ones who were playing around as if they hadn't seen each other for ages after just one night and asked, "You don't have any objections, do you?"

"Woof, woof!" We have no objection to you taking it all.

"Then it's decided!" After saying that, he took out two bones and threw them to the two little ones.

Zhou Pin tidied up the living room to turn it into a kitchen, and Xu Lin took out a bowl of fermented dough and a bowl of filling from her storage space. The two of them started making steamed buns.

God always closes a window when He opens a door. Zhou Pin had absolutely no talent for making steamed buns; the ones he made either had filling leaking out or were oddly shaped. In order to make them more appetizing in the future, Xu Lin assigned Zhou Pin to roll out the dough and put them in the pot.

Xu Lin used to work in a restaurant making dough, and the steamed buns she made were even more beautiful than those sold in stores; they were a pleasure to look at.

Zhou Pin followed Xu Lin's example and built a kang (a heated brick bed) and a traditional earthen stove in his home. Now it's perfect for steaming buns. Steaming from both sides at the same time is very fast, and the kang is heated up as well.

The thought of sleeping on a warm kang bed that night filled Xu Lin with joy.

The two of them worked together, one wrapping the dough and the other assisting, chatting as they steamed the buns. By 6 p.m., they had finished wrapping all the dough and fillings, producing eight batches of buns. They ate buns for lunch and dinner.

The two little ones also got to eat their first meat buns and were extremely satisfied.
