Chapter 353 A Few Things Happened on the Road 4

"Xu Lin is back! Did you catch a goat? A female goat, so Youyou can drink goat milk now!" Li Jingjing greeted Xu Lin warmly as she saw her return.

Li Jingjing's first reaction upon seeing the goat was to feed her child goat milk, not to kill it and eat it. Keep in mind, they hadn't eaten meat in a long time.

"This is cool water for you to quench your thirst. How is it up on the mountain?" Grandma Wu, carrying little Youyou, also came to Xu Lin's side.

“The mountain is all rocks and there are hardly any plants. We found this goat by accident. As you can see, it’s skin and bones,” Xu Lin said truthfully.

"There's another litter of rabbits here; we'll stew the big ones later," Zhou Pin said.

“Okay, there’s groundwater gushing out over there. Everyone’s fetching water there. They should be almost done by now. I’ll go over and clean up the rabbits,” Sun Wei said.

"Keep the rabbit skin; we'll make a vest for Youyou," Li Jingjing said.

"Know."

The group got busy, and Xu Lin milked the goat, cooked it, and fed it to Xiao Youyou. She thought it was milk powder, so she took a sip first. The taste was different from what she usually drank, so she took another sip and then drank it all in one go.

"Our Youyou may be a child with a hard life, but she is also a lucky one," said Grandma Wu.

“We are all lucky now,” Xu Lin said.

When the others saw that Xu Lin and her group had brought back sheep, which were still nursing ewes, they wanted to exchange their supplies for some goat milk to supplement their family's nutrition.

Xu Lin had no objection; after all, the milk produced by the ewe after it had eaten its fill was more than enough for the group of them and Xiao Youyou to drink.

The rabbit stewed for lunch included radishes in the soup, and the main dish was baked flatbread. The group ate heartily, and the aroma, even without much seasoning, wafted far and wide, attracting frequent glances from those around them.

Some people wanted to exchange for some rabbit meat, but Xu Lin refused. There was only one pot, just enough for the few of them. If they exchanged it with one person, or another, would they still have any to eat? Besides, they hadn't had a proper meal in a long time.

In the afternoon, Xu Lin milked the goats, Grandma Wu looked after Xiao Youyou, and everyone else went out to find supplies, as they couldn't just sit around and do nothing.

Xu Lin started a business by trading the ewes she found. In half a day, she earned two bundles of firewood, two kilograms of coarse grains, three kilograms of flour, and half a basket of wild vegetables by exchanging sheep milk.

After the people exchanging goat milk left, Xu Lin led the goat to a grassy area to let it eat. When no one was looking, she took a cloth bag from the car and took out some hay to feed the goat.

There are plenty of pasture spaces like this, and the poultry and livestock living in these spaces can't possibly eat them all because of controlled breeding, but they can't get any outside the spaces, resulting in a significant gap between the rich and the poor.

In the evening, Zhou Pin and the others returned one after another and began to take stock of the supplies they had collected. This time, Sun Wei also caught a nest of rabbits. Minister Sun took out about ten eggs and half a basket of wild vegetables. Zhou Pin took a chicken, but unfortunately, he didn't control his strength well when he caught it and it died. Otherwise, he could have laid eggs and made a fortune.

There was some leftover broth from the rabbit meat we ate at noon, and we also made a lot more flatbread. In the evening, we added wild vegetables to make a soup with the flatbread, which made for a pretty good dinner. Although they hunted rabbits and pheasants, everyone understands the principle that good things shouldn't be eaten all at once.

Starting tomorrow, everyone will take turns going out to "serve". The first wave is tentatively set as Xu Lin, Zhou Pin and Minister Sun, and the second wave is Sun Wei, Li Jingjing and Grandma Wu.

The three who did not serve in the military were responsible for cooking, taking care of the children, and milking the goats that day. They would also collect supplies when they had free time.
