Incompetent doctors mislead people
Grandma Sun, who sells loquats, had been suffering from headaches for several days. When the headaches flared up, the pain was so severe that she felt like banging her head against the wall. She had heard that there was a newly opened clinic called Huichun Clinic on the south corner of West Street, where the doctor claimed to be a miracle doctor with superb medical skills, specializing in treating all kinds of difficult and complicated diseases. So, she came here with a try-it-and-see attitude.
The nearly forty-year-old physician, Dr. Cui, prescribed her a dose of borneol pills, to be taken three times a day.
At first, the medication did provide some relief, but after three days, her headache worsened, and she frequently felt dizzy and nauseous, vomiting incessantly at night.
"This is detoxification. Take it for three more days, and the lesions will be completely eradicated." Doctor Cui listened to her description without raising his head, continuing to copy the prescription without stopping.
"He's lying to you." Lin Yi leaned against the eaves pillar at the entrance of the clinic, then suddenly realized that this was not in line with Qiu Qingye's dignified demeanor, and stood up gracefully again. "If you keep eating, you'll probably be close to death." She had originally heard that this newly opened clinic had a full range of medicinal herbs and that its prescriptions were novel yet effective. Who would have thought that she would witness a quack doctor harming her so soon after arriving?
"How dare you speak to our divine doctor like that, little girl?" The speaker was a boy of about twelve or thirteen years old, with short, choppy hair. Although he was not old, his posture of lecturing people with his hands on his hips was like that of a servant who bullies others and is not well-liked. He must be a medicine boy who helps to dispense medicine here.
The boy leaned forward, his neck stiff, and said, "Last time I broke my leg, it was the miracle doctor who set it for me!"
"Just a lucky break, a blind cat stumbling upon a dead mouse," Lin Yi said dismissively. It seemed she had come to the wrong place today and would have to leave empty-handed.
Upon hearing this, the young apprentice became furious and tried to climb over the counter to argue with her, but was stopped by the renowned physician surnamed Cui, who held him down by the shoulder.
“Young lady, I have been practicing medicine for twenty years. Why don’t you tell me where I’ve made a mistake in my diagnosis? If you can’t tell me…”
"Of course I can say it." Lin Yi seemed confident as he strode into the clinic, with Xue Ya jogging a few steps behind to catch up.
"Since you've prescribed these borneol pills, may I ask what medicinal ingredients are inside?"
Doctor Cui chuckled twice as if he had heard a joke. "This Dragon Brain Pill is my exclusive secret recipe. I will rely on this recipe to make a living in the future, so how can I easily reveal it?"
"Then can I take a look? That should be alright, right?"
Doctor Cui gestured with her lip towards the young apprentice. The boy, with a sullen face, reluctantly took out a pill the size and color of a longan seed from the cabinet and placed it in her hand.
Lin Yi took the pill, sniffed it, and then broke it open, revealing white particles mixed in with the brown pill.
Even though she was not familiar with traditional Chinese medicine, she knew that the white crystalline particles were borneol, also known as camphor.
Borneol has a light, cool smell and has analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.
Lin Yi often stayed up late when he was in school, and eye drops were a necessity, so he accumulated a whole box of empty boxes. To relieve eye strain, commercially available eye drops often contain borneol, which feels as cool as mint when dropped into the eyes.
Therefore, she was very familiar with the taste of this thing.
However, she only learned a few days ago while reading a medical book that although borneol is good, it has extremely strong side effects. If the dosage is not controlled properly, it can cause poisoning, ranging from dizziness and vomiting to coma and death.
Judging from the ingredients of these pills... Doctor Cui really didn't tremble at all when he added the camphor.
“I’ve only studied medical books for ten days, but I know that borneol is toxic and needs to be used in combination with other medicinal materials to neutralize it. The more borneol you use, the more counterproductive it becomes, and you could even risk your life if you’re not careful. You say you’ve been practicing medicine for twenty years—and you’ve never known this in all these years?” She was genuinely confused, hence her sincere question.
Doctor Cui, his sore spot hit, was enraged, his face turning red and purple. "How could I not know? But her dizziness is so severe, the dosage has to be increased, otherwise how can she be cured!"
"There are ways to cure it."
Lin Yi sat down next to the lady and said, "Madam, may I take your pulse?"
Although she looked like a wealthy young lady who was untouched by worldly affairs from head to toe, she actually described the ingredients of the Dragon Brain Pill in a very reasonable way. At this moment, Aunt Sun decided to try anything and extended her wrist to examine her.
Lin Yi held her breath and gently placed three fingers on her wrist to feel the pulse. She didn't actually know how to take a pulse; she was just pretending. What would truly be useful was the medical index the system had given her as compensation.
She waited a moment, but the treatment didn't appear out of thin air in her mind as had been promised.
Lin Yi thought to himself that he was about to finish, but forgot to ask the system how to activate this cheat ability.
She frantically called for the system in her mind.
Almost simultaneously, a mechanical voice sounded: "[Host, the system has granted you access to the Medical Channel Indexing cheat code. Please explore its usage on your own.]"
...
Lin Yi has already made his promise. If things don't turn out this way, how will he handle the situation?
Despite the sweltering heat of midsummer, Lin Yi broke out in a cold sweat.
The sharp-eyed apprentice noticed the sweat on Lin Yi's forehead and said gloatingly, "Could it be that he can't tell and is scared?"
Xueya retorted from the side, "What are you afraid of? It's just that it's too hot today, and our young lady is sweating."
Lin Yi didn't have time to pay attention to their argument. She thought to herself: Maybe the procedure is wrong? Since it's a consultation, traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes observation, listening, questioning, and palpation. Shouldn't she follow the doctor's procedure and ask some questions first?
She withdrew her hand from taking her pulse. "Auntie, please tell me when the headache started, and if there were any other symptoms when the headache occurred?"
"I can't quite remember when it started, but it seems like I've always had this problem. It just got worse recently after I caught a cold."
Grandma Sun raised her hand and pressed it to the back of her head, where her neck and shoulders felt numb. "Besides the headache, my neck also hurts, and my shoulders are a little numb."
Numbness and pain in the neck and shoulders sound like cervical spondylosis, where the pressure on the nerves causes a reflex effect on the head, resulting in a headache.
As Lin Yi thought of this, a passage of text suddenly appeared out of thin air in front of her. The densely packed, tiny characters were familiar to her.
It turns out that the triggering condition is the need to understand the specific characteristics of the illness.
Lin Yi carefully read the passage, took the paper and pen from the counter from Doctor Cui, and wrote a prescription: "Boil kudzu root, ephedra, ginger, licorice, peony root, and red dates into a soup. After drinking it, cover yourself with a blanket and take a nap. Your headache will be relieved."
She wasn't used to using a calligraphy brush, and wrote slowly, stroke by stroke. The lines seemed to be deliberately defying her, winding and twisting instead of following a straight line. It was hard to believe that when she was in school, her teachers praised her beautiful handwriting; now she was writing like a dog's scrawled scrawl.
"Go back and buy a bamboo pillow—a pillow made of bamboo—to put under your neck when you sleep."
After listening attentively to her explanation, Aunt Sun, still somewhat bewildered, asked, "That's all?"
Lin Yi glanced at the basket of unsold loquats beside her feet, thought for a moment, and added, "Don't spend too long picking loquats; take frequent breaks along the way."
Grandma Sun was even more confused, rubbing her fingernails which still had some loquat juice left. "My headache has nothing to do with loquats?"
Lin nodded slightly, subconsciously smoothing her non-existent, wispy sideburns: "Your headache is caused by cervical spondylosis, probably from tilting your head back too much while picking loquats. Just be more careful."
What is cervical spondylosis?
"..." Lin Yi didn't know what cervical spondylosis was called in ancient times, so he could only describe it in plain language as thoroughly as possible: "Cervical spondylosis is the stiffness and strain of the bones and meridians in your neck caused by prolonged head tilting up or down."
Doctor Cui scoffed, "That's just neck pain."
"Oh—" This time, Aunt Sun finally understood.
Although she had prescribed medicine, this was the first time she had used the indexing system, and Lin Yi couldn't guarantee that it would really cure the disease. Based on the principle of saving lives to the end, she planned to provide after-sales service: "Try the prescription I gave you for a few days. If there is still no improvement, then go to... then go to the Qiu residence to find me."
She hesitated for a moment between the Xie residence and the Qiu residence, but ultimately decided on the Qiu residence. After all, the Xie residence was Xie Chengnan's territory, and she couldn't just invite someone to the residence without prior notice. Besides, she would be returning to the Qiu residence soon anyway, and if this old lady's illness was truly serious, she could ask the Imperial Physician Qiu for help.
Hearing her say this, Granny Sun couldn't help but be surprised: "Young lady, are you from the Qiu family? The Qiu family from Guanglu South Street?!"
Lin Yi nodded slightly.
Doctor Cui, standing to the side, suddenly changed his expression.
"Everyone knows that the Qiu family is the residence of the head of the Imperial Medical Academy, who is a royal physician. How could I possibly go there?"
"If I say you can go, then you can go." It wasn't that Lin Yi acted on his own initiative. Although Qiu Baiji held the official rank of third grade, he had no airs of an official. On the contrary, he prioritized patients above all else. If he heard of a patient who was difficult to treat, he would personally visit them to study and treat the illness. The current emperor knew of his heart that was dedicated to healing all people, which is why he personally inscribed the four characters "A Heart as Benevolent as Water."
The old woman was about to continue refusing when Xueya became anxious and interrupted, "Auntie, this is the daughter of the Imperial Medical Academy Director you mentioned, the eldest daughter of our Qiu family. The young lady said you can go, no one dares to stop you!"
Grandma Sun covered her mouth in surprise: "You are Miss Qiu!"
Just as Lin Yi was about to admit it, a loud bang rang out! For some unknown reason, Doctor Cui slammed his hand on the table and stood up. His beard trembled violently with intense emotion. Pointing at Qiu Qingye, he finally managed to utter a complete sentence after a long pause: "You...you are Qiu Qingye, and your father is Qiu Baiji?!"
His face turned fierce. Xueya stepped forward and blocked Lin Yi's path, hands on her hips, her imposing manner no less than that of the Qiu family: "Exactly! What do you want?"
"Guards—get them out of here!"
Upon hearing this, the apprentice obediently stepped forward, intending to drive the two away. However, a burly man, eight feet tall, emerged from behind the curtain at the back of the clinic and approached the two step by step.
Seeing that things were not going well, Lin grabbed Xueya and ran towards the door, but the big man was several times faster than them.
"We can walk by ourselves—" Before Lin Yi could finish speaking, he was thrown out of the clinic amidst Xue Ya's cries of "Don't touch my young lady!"
Lin Yi fell heavily to the ground, half of her body scraping against the stone pavement, burning with pain. But she didn't have time to think, and struggled to move her body again. A BMW galloped around the corner, heading straight for her face!
At the critical moment, the rider tightly reined in the horse, its two black hooves hanging precariously in mid-air.
Lin gritted his teeth and rolled away from the danger zone. The next moment, the horse finally lost control and its front hooves fell heavily to the ground.
The young man in crimson robes quickly dismounted and came to Lin Yi's side, bending down to help her up: "Miss, are you alright?"
But when he saw her face clearly, his expression turned cold, and his tone was full of disgust: "What, it's you?"
