Chapter 81 Conflict Escalates

The night was deep, with only one star hanging in the sky, twinkling faintly.

The eleven mercenaries successfully crossed the river and reached the shore using ropes. The adjutant crept onto a boulder, took out binoculars, and peered towards the shelter.

The shelter was surrounded by high walls, but the lights inside still illuminated the surrounding area, making it very conspicuous in the darkness.

The adjutant gestured to the people behind him, and the one-eyed man took out a cross, put it on his chest, and nodded heavily, pointing to the wall directly in front of them.

Immediately, the four mercenaries jogged to the foot of the wall, took out Molotov cocktails from their backpacks, lit them, and threw them over the wall.

The black mist guards on the watchtower noticed the commotion outside the wall and transformed into a cloud of black mist, charging towards the mercenaries. Old Bai remained still and reported the situation to Zhang Shi.

The flames behind the villa alerted Zhang Shi, but fortunately, the attack came from behind, and the Molotov cocktails were all blocked by the villa's walls, preventing any damage to livestock or farmland.

Enraged, Zhang Shi grabbed his composite bow, ignoring his wounds, and rushed out to climb the rear watchtower. Zhao Feng, meanwhile, led Xiao Mei to fight the fires. The weather was dry, and the fire could spread; if the villa were reduced to ashes, they would have no choice but to huddle together with their animal friends in the poultry and livestock pens.

Zhang Shi climbed the watchtower and found that the area at the foot of the wall was in chaos, with several Molotov cocktails on the ground and burning. The scene outside was clearly visible in the firelight.

Despite having received prior information about the existence of the Black Mist Guardians and making some preparations, the mercenaries were still able to proceed.

However, they underestimated the strength of the Black Mist Guardians in the darkness. They were caught off guard from the start and lost one of their men. But these mercenaries were clearly no pushovers; after the initial chaos, they quickly recovered and began to fight the Black Mist Guardians together, resulting in a stalemate for a time.

Zhang Shi knew without a doubt where these people came from, and immediately drew his composite bow, unleashing his Arrow Rain skill at the mercenaries.

One-Eyed Dragon spotted Zhang Shi atop the watchtower and immediately shouted a warning to the others. The mercenaries, noticing the rain of arrows, seemed prepared and instead of taking cover, each pulled a standard-issue shield from their backpacks and held it above their heads.

The arrows were scattered, and their destructive power was much weaker than that of regular arrows. Zhang Shi's attack failed to harm the group in the slightest, and his anger became even more violent in the sweltering heat.

In the end, the Black Mist Guardians gained something by focusing on one thing but neglecting another.

In their focus on dealing with the rain of arrows, the mercenaries neglected the attack of the black mist guards. The guards seized the opportunity, wielding a large sword formed from the mist, and instantly decapitated the nearest man, leaving only a headless corpse.

Redneck was right next to the corpse, blood splattered all over his face. He was both terrified and furious. He ripped the cross off his neck and threw it on the ground, cursing as he backed away.

"Damn it, that intelligence is just fooling us, it's completely useless!"

Having landed a successful blow, the Black Mist Guardian, seeing the enemy's fear, intensified its black aura, shattered the cross with a single stomp, and chased after the enemy, brandishing its greatsword.

The Black Mist Guardians are indeed evil beings, countered by items with holy attributes. During the day, the crosses carried by the bald man and his group had some effect. However, at night, the Black Mist Guardians came to their home turf, and naturally, they could ignore these ordinary crosses and simply charge through them.

Seeing this, One-Eyed Dragon organized his men to intercept the Black Mist Guardians, intending to wear them down through a hunt.

Zhang Shi wasn't idle either. He seized the opportunity and shot an arrow with a strong gust of wind towards the red-necked man.

Although Redneck was cowardly, he was very clever. He kept his eyes on Zhang Shi's movements. When Zhang Shi drew his bow, he had already put his shield in front of him and ran backwards towards the riverbank.

"Smack!"

The arrow pierced the shield with a muffled thud. The arrow had penetrated the shield, but unfortunately, its quality was low; the arrow shaft got stuck and failed to go through completely.

Redneck's eyes widened as he stared at the arrow tip less than a centimeter from his eyeballs. For a moment, even his legs felt weak.

The adjutant, wielding a machete, deflected the Black Mist Guard's attack and rescued the redneck who was standing there in a daze.

"What the hell are you standing there for? Don't you want to live?"

One-Eyed Dragon roared, waking Redneck.

Redneck broke the arrow, planted his shield in the ground, took a musket from his backpack, and aimed it at the Black Mist Guard.

Zhang Shi had excellent eyesight and immediately recognized that the musket was a graded weapon. Just as he was about to fire an arrow to provide support, Redneck preemptively pulled the trigger.

The other mercenaries scattered like birds when they saw Redneck take out his musket, and even the Black Mist Guards were somewhat confused about the situation.

A deafening explosion rang out, and a fiery serpent shot from the muzzle of the musket, engulfing everything in its path in a fan shape. The bullet, mixed with gunpowder, struck the black mist guard, sending it flying.

The projectile, resembling a dragon's breath, ignited the Black Mist Guardian with bursts of flame. In an instant, the mist surrounding the Black Mist Guardian thinned, and it emitted mournful cries.

Seeing that the situation was not good, Zhang Shi had a sudden thought. He recalled the Black Mist Guardian to the scroll to recuperate, and then activated Triple Strike, shooting an arrow toward Redneck's throat.

"Get out of the way!"

The one-eyed dragon shouted a warning, conjuring a ball of green energy in his hand and blasting it towards the arrow.

The green energy ball was quite powerful, actually deflecting Zhang Shi's arrows off their intended target.

Redneck had long since abandoned his shield, leaping to the side and successfully dodging the fatal blow.

Zhang Shi's gaze turned serious. The one-eyed dragon had just used a skill, and at this stage, survivors with skills and high-grade equipment were no ordinary individuals.

"It seems the Eagle Regiment has gone to great lengths to cause me trouble."

Zhang Shi harbored a strong murderous intent and turned his attention to the other members of the mercenary group.

"Scatter!"

The one-eyed man roared, alerting everyone.

His skills were still on cooldown, and Redneck was busy reloading his muskets, so the mercenaries were unable to counter Zhang Shi for the time being.

"ah!"

A scream rang out, followed by a second and a third.

In the blink of an eye, Zhang Shi had shot and killed three mercenaries. The one-eyed man's eyes were bloodshot, and his skill cooldown was finally over. He forcefully hurled a ball of energy at Zhang Shi.

On the other side, Redneck reloaded his musket and pulled the trigger at Zhang Shi.

Zhang Shi dared not be careless and immediately lay down on the spot.

The energy balls and dragon breath projectiles struck the sentry tower's railings, blasting a large hole in the iron bars and nearly injuring Zhang Shi.

Zhang Shi was startled when he saw the gap in the watchtower. He dared not expose himself to the enemy's guns again and had no choice but to temporarily avoid their attack. He slid down from the tower and prepared to launch the next attack.
