Chapter 109 Don't Mess Around
Lu Yan and Lu Xun saw Zhou Jianguo off at the gate of the courtyard. After Zhou Jianguo left, Lu Yan turned to Lu Xun and Zhou Zhipeng and said, "You two come with me to the car to move some things. I'm on a business trip this time, and the aunties specifically asked me to bring some things over for Jiajia and Zhipeng."
When Xu Jiajia heard that there were still her things, she wanted to go and help carry them, but Zhou Zhipeng immediately stopped her, saying, "Jiajia, you don't need me. Asun and I are fine. You and Ningxuan should go back first."
Lu Yan and Lu Xun nodded at the same time. Seeing this, Xu Jiajia gave up and stopped following.
Ning Xuan pulled Xu Jiajia along, "Let's go back and clean up the dishes. There's a lot to wash today."
Hearing Ning Xuan say this, Xu Jiajia also remembered the table full of bowls and chopsticks, which she hadn't bothered to clean up while they were talking.
The two of them had just started tidying up when Lu Xun and his group came in carrying several large bags of things.
Ning Xuan said to Xu Jiajia, "Go see what your family brought you, I'll wash it."
Xu Jiajia shook her head, "The things won't run away if we leave them there. There are so many bowls, let's hurry up together."
Seeing that she didn't seem to be in a hurry, Ning Xuan didn't try to persuade her any further, since washing really did take quite a while anyway.
Zhou Zhipeng and Lu Xun ran over to help, telling Xu Jiajia and Ning Xuan to go and rest, but the two refused, saying, "Your hands are already wet, and we're almost done washing, so don't touch them anymore. You can wash them next time."
Zhou Zhipeng and Lu Xun stopped washing the dishes and started sweeping the floor or wiping the table. In less than ten minutes, they finished their work.
Lu Yan watched with great interest as the group of people eagerly took on the work, finding it quite amusing.
"Judging from your appearance, you seem to be doing quite well. Tell me and I'll tell your aunties, and they'll be relieved. Especially you, Jiajia, your aunties were worried that Lu Xun and Zhipeng, those two boys, were too careless and wouldn't be able to take good care of you."
"Brother Yan, when you go back, please tell them to put their minds at ease. I'm doing really well here. I wasn't used to farm work at first, but I've gotten better at it later."
Later, the team set up a chicken farm, and Zhipeng and I, along with a few others, got jobs there, which made things much easier. Although it wasn't as comfortable as working as a permanent employee at a factory with all the benefits, life was still pretty good.
Lu Yan nodded knowingly and smiled, "It's pretty good, with meat and prawns. The food is even better than when we were in Beijing."
Ning Xuan looked a little guilty, and Lu Xun quickly explained, "Brother, we only eat such a lavish meal occasionally; we don't usually eat that well."
Lu Yan didn't seem to believe it, but his intention wasn't to blame them, but rather to offer a reminder.
"You guys should also be careful. Captain Zhou seems like a good guy today. If it were someone else, and they found out you guys are that good, you'd be the ones being targeted."
Lu Xun and the others nodded awkwardly.
Lu Yan could tell that these people had only taken some of what he said to heart, and that they would probably have to compromise on the actual actions. However, it wasn't a big problem, as he still trusted that they had some sense of propriety.
He raised his wrist to check the time on his watch. "It's getting late. I have to rush back to interrogate people. You should all get some rest too. Ah Xun, come out and see me off."
Knowing that the brothers needed some time alone, the others didn't stand on ceremony and saw Lu Yan out again.
After leaving the courtyard, the two walked all the way to where Lu Yan had parked his car.
Lu Yan spoke first: "Get in the car."
"Brother, where are we going?" Lu Xun asked, puzzled.
Lu Yan sighed, "Nowhere to go, let's go upstairs and sit for a while so we can talk more easily."
Lu Xun then realized what was happening and quickly opened the car door to get into the passenger seat.
After the door was closed again, Lu Yan said to Lu Xun with a serious expression, "Did you go to the black market?"
Lu Xun felt a little guilty, wondering if his brother knew something, and stubbornly said, "No, it's just a coincidence that these dishes are here today."
"Come on, you can't help but tap your toes when you lie. You definitely went to the black market, and it wasn't just to buy things. I bet you went to speculate or profiteer?"
"Brother, what nonsense are you talking about? What if someone hears us?" Lu Xun frantically tried to shut Lu Yan up.
Lu Yan waved his hand to block Lu Xun, saying, "You know this matter can't be known by others, right? Why don't you use your brain more when you do things? What kind of family do we have? Your brother still works in this department. If you get arrested, it won't just be your problem. Our family's future in politics and the military might be ruined because of you!"
Lu Xun questioned in a low voice, "Questioning? It's not that serious, is it?"
What he got in return was a solid tap on the head from Lu Yan. "How can it not be serious? Have you become dull from living in the countryside for too long? In a family like ours, even if you don't care about this path, you shouldn't be this insensitive."
Haven't you heard about the Xu family's situation? They dote on Jiajia like she's their own precious jewel, so how could they bear to let her stay in the countryside for so long? Isn't it because they dare not make the slightest mistake right now?
Recently, Beijing has been making headlines again. Even with the He family's background, while they can't be said to be completely ruined, even if the investigation reveals their own problems aren't that serious, some dirt will definitely be unearthed. Many people are eyeing their patriarch's position and will seize the opportunity to bring him down. Even if they aren't, they'll still suffer greatly.
Lu Xun remained silent. "Is it really that serious?"
Lu Yan nodded. "The situation is likely to get more and more serious. For at least the next year or two, don't cause any trouble. Since you don't have to work so hard now, just stay put for now. When you go back, remind the others as well, understand?"
Lu Xun nodded honestly, "I understand, brother. How's things at home?"
Lu Yan looked relieved. "You still have some conscience. You know how to care about your family. Everything is fine at home. Your parents are very concerned about you."
"We'll have family visit leave this year, so I'll go back home for the Spring Festival." Lu Xun also missed his family, and his eyes welled up with tears.
"Yes, you should also be careful. A real man should be responsible and not willful. Also, since you're all living together, I know you and Zipeng are close to Jiajia, but Ning Zhiqing is also a girl, so please remember to take good care of her." Lu Yan couldn't help but nag a few more times.
"Alright, it's really getting late, I have to go. Please tell them for me that I won't say goodbye in person." Lu Yan probably realized that he was acting like a mother hen and didn't want to ruin the image of the strict older brother he had always cultivated in his younger brother's eyes, so he quickly stopped talking.
"Okay, I'm heading back now. Drive carefully, bro."
Lu Xun got out of the car and stood by the roadside, watching Lu Yan's car drive forward until it was out of sight before returning to the courtyard.
In the courtyard, Xu Jiajia and Zhou Zhipeng were in their rooms looking at the packages that their families had entrusted to Lu Yan to bring over.
Ning Xuan didn't have any packages, but she went back to her room because she suddenly remembered that the system seemed to have enough upgrade attempts.
