"What happened?"
"What happened?"
"Get your tools ready!"
"Protect the employer!"
Lu Qiqi's voice was sharp and urgent, drawing everyone's attention.
The bodyguards, along with Li Changlong and Zhou Yi, all rushed towards her.
Finally, they followed Lu Qiqi's gaze and looked towards the corner.
A tiny shadowy figure shrank almost imperceptibly in the corner.
Gu Shaoqing, holding a dagger, walked towards a corner, appearing alert and on guard.
Before long, Gu Shaoqing emerged from the corner, carrying a child by the arm.
In the moonlight, the child's eyes shone brightly, and his gaze was like that of a wolf—sharp and fierce.
Whether it was because of Gu Shaoqing who captured him on the spot, he harbored hatred towards everyone present.
Biaozi looked at the child, who only reached his thighs, and shouted, "What are you doing in the corner!"
As he shouted, the boy's hateful gaze intensified, as if he wanted to pierce through Biaozi's body with his eyes.
Suddenly, the child bit Gu Shaoqing's arm.
Gu Shaoqing felt the pain and had no choice but to let go of him.
But the child wouldn't budge, so Gu Shaoqing slapped him on the shoulder, knocking him to the ground.
Summer clothes are thin, and when Gu Shaoqing lifted his clothes, he saw a mouthful of teeth marks.
No matter how well-mannered he was, he couldn't help but curse, "Are you a dog? You bite everyone you see!"
Knowing he was no match for a dozen adults, the child nimbly got up and tried to run away.
Seeing that Gu Shaoqing had suffered a great loss, Biaozi grabbed the child by the back of his collar and lifted him up.
He shouted, "Whose family are you? Come on! Go find your parents and settle this with them!"
In Biaozi's mind, if a child makes a mistake, he should tell an adult so that the adult can discipline the child.
The kid refused to admit defeat. Even with Biaozi grabbing him by the back of his collar, he wouldn't behave, baring his teeth and claws like a little wolf cub.
Biaozi was so impatient that he tapped him on the head.
The child was hurt by the knock and started crying loudly.
The cries rose and fell, even prompting the dogs to bark in response.
Soon a woman came over and saw her son in someone else's hands. This was terrible.
"You damned bastards, put my child down right now, or I'll kill you all!"
When Biaozi saw such a fierce woman, he was startled and immediately let go of the child.
The woman rushed forward to check if the child was injured. "Ah Bing, did they hurt you?"
The child looked at his mother, his gaze softening, and whispered, "No."
Hearing that the child was alright, the woman immediately relaxed and scolded, "I told you not to come! Why didn't you listen! When we get back, I'll have your father give you a good scolding!"
After saying that, the woman stood up and glared at Lu Qiqi and the others.
Then she took the child and left.
Watching the two figures walk away, the woman suddenly slapped the child's bottom hard.
He yelled, "Everything is yours! What's the rush!"
After uttering those words, the two disappeared around the corner.
After hearing the woman's last words, Lu Qiqi felt a vague unease, as if she had overlooked something very important.
"Hiss, this must be a puppy reincarnated, its bite hurts way too much, it's killing me!"
Gu Shaoqing covered the extra teeth marks on his wrist and complained indignantly.
Lu Qiqi stepped forward. "Let me see."
Gu Shaoqing, thinking that Lu Qiqi was a doctor, removed his hand from his hand.
The skin on my arm was broken where I had been bitten, and the area around the teeth marks was bruised.
In her opinion, it would be better to bite until it bleeds and squeeze out the blood; that would be faster.
She said, "Even if you get bitten, you can't let your guard down."
As she spoke, she handed Gu Shaoqing a soapberry, saying, "Use this to wash your hands, and then disinfect them with alcohol."
Gu Shaoqing took the soapberry and played with it carelessly, not taking Lu Qiqi's words to heart at all.
Lu Qiqi could only make it sound serious, "If a person is bitten by a dog, they will get canine disease, and if they are bitten by a person, they may also get the disease."
When Gu Shaoqing thought about how strange the child seemed, he immediately realized that Lu Qi's words made sense.
Therefore, I dared not be perfunctory and quickly fetched water, used soapberry leaves to scrub the foam, and cleaned the teeth marks.
After Gu Shaoqing finished treating his wounds, Lu Qiqi walked up to him and said, "Young Manager, this village feels a bit strange. Shall we sneak away?"
Gu Shaoqing recalled the woman's last words and, upon reflection, also felt that something was amiss.
"Are they trying to...?"
As he spoke, Gu Shaoqing made a throat-slitting gesture with his hand.
The woman's words inevitably led them to speculate wildly.
Even the villagers don't have this idea.
But amidst the chaos and famine, they didn't flee for their lives, but stayed in the village.
Why don't they check the identities of outsiders? Are they really that trusting of them?
Thinking of this, Lu Qiqi said, "No matter what, let's go now."
Gu Shaoqing thought she made sense. There were fewer of them, and even if the bodyguards were skilled, it was hard to guarantee that Lu Qiqi and the others would be safe.
It would be better to leave before the villagers make a move.
Having made up his mind, Gu Shaoqing told the bodyguards to quickly pack their things and leave.
Li Changlong, puzzled, walked up to Lu Qiqi and asked, "Is something wrong? Why are we traveling in the dark?"
"There's no time to explain. I'll explain after we leave the village."
Since that was the case, Li Changlong didn't ask any more questions. He went straight into the house and carried the pot onto the carriage driven by Doctor Luo.
They had planned to stay overnight, and quickly packed their things.
Lu Qiqi arranged for a bodyguard to escort Doctor Luo's carriage.
The two senior doctors have poor night vision; if they encounter an emergency and the car overturns, it could be disastrous.
As Gu Shaoqing was preparing to leave, he was about to extinguish the fire when Lu Qiqi stopped him.
"We must keep this fire going!"
Gu Shaoqing looked at her, puzzled.
“Keep the fire going and close the door. They’ll think we’re still awake, and even if they want to do something, they won’t do it while the fire is burning.”
"This will give us more time to leave the village."
Upon hearing this, Gu Shaoqing immediately understood and did as Lu Qiqi said.
And so the group quietly made their way to the village entrance.
The village was quiet and still, as if it had fallen into a deep sleep.
Lu Qiqi, riding the bodyguard's horse, saw a brightly lit house not far from where they were staying and asked, "Who lives in that house?"
Gu Shaoqing followed her gaze and, remembering something, said, "It looks like a caravan, dozens of people heading to the border. In this day and age, to dare to do business at the border shows how bold they are."
Lu Qiqi thought that they would pass through this place again on their way back from the border. Without the protection of bodyguards, they might lose their lives here.
Suddenly, Lu Qiqi had an idea. "You take everyone and go first. I'll go see what's so strange about this village!"
Having said that, he pulled on the horse's reins and started walking back.
