The joy of the family reunion was somewhat dampened by the successful burial of Chen and Lu Dashan in a single day.
The boys in the house stopped running and playing in the yard, and the house became much quieter.
After returning home, Lu Qiqi and Lu Yao took a bath with pomelo water, ate some food quickly, and then turned off the lights and went to bed early.
The two sisters lay flat on the carved rosewood bed, their hands folded under the covers and placed on their abdomens. Both had their eyes wide open, gazing at the bed curtains above them.
A moment later, Lu Yao let out a sobbing cry, "Sister, I can't sleep, I miss my parents."
Upon hearing this, Lu Qiqi turned and pulled Lu Yao into her arms, resting her chin on Lu Yao's hair and gently patting her back. "Good girl, Yao. Your parents in heaven will miss you and protect you."
The person in her arms nodded obediently and hummed softly. Lu Qiqi remembered something, "Ayao, do you still wear the jade bead that Mother left behind?"
“Wear it,” Lu Yao held out her hand in front of her eyes. It was too dark in the room, so she could only vaguely see that her wrist was wearing a string of things.
Lu Qiqi grasped her hand and stroked the bracelet on her wrist with her fingertips. The jade beads were warm and smooth to the touch, and she coaxed her softly, "Jade beads symbolize thoughts of loved ones."
Ah Yao, these are things left by my mother.
"When you miss them in the future, just look at this jade bead."
Speaking of this, Lu Yao was completely wide awake. She twisted her body, broke free from the embrace, and got up.
"What's wrong?"
"Sister," Lu Yao said after a moment of silence, "can we get back the Shu brocade we pawned before we fled the famine?"
She also found this difficult, but it was one of the few things her mother had left behind, and she really couldn't bear to part with it.
Upon hearing this, Lu Qiqi was also stunned.
When she first arrived in the Great Jin Dynasty, her family was destitute. The original owner and Lu Yao lived in a dilapidated house with crumbling walls.
That Shu brocade painting was exquisite. If it weren't for the fact that there was no food left in the house and we were about to flee famine with the villagers, we would have been very lucky.
She wouldn't even consider pawning the Shu brocade, let alone pawning it under a death contract to exchange for sufficient food.
With the famine looming, grain prices are bound to rise outrageously. Using jade beads to pawn silver to buy grain simply won't be enough to support their journey to Luzhou Prefecture.
At that time, the space had not yet appeared, and she had no other choice. After all, compared to fleeing the famine with the Shu brocade, she was also risking being robbed.
The fact that no one was fleeing with food made people feel at ease.
On the road to escape famine, corpses of the starved littered the fields. No matter how precious or meaningful the Shu brocade was, if people starved to death, it would still belong to someone else.
In the darkness, Lu Qiqi sighed almost imperceptibly, "Tongfu Pawnshops are all over the Great Jin Dynasty, waiting for me to find the time."
I went to Tongfu Pawnshop in Luzhou Prefecture to inquire about the whereabouts of the Shu brocade.
Now that they've settled down, besides medicinal herbs, her space is mostly filled with silver and other valuables.
If she could find the Shu brocade, she would be willing to pay ten times the original price to redeem it.
Hopefully, we can still find it, otherwise, with Lu Yao's crybaby nature, she might secretly shed tears.
Upon learning that her sister wanted to retrieve the Shu brocade, Lu Yao pursed her lips and a faint smile appeared on her face.
She crawled back into bed, smelling her sister's scent, and felt inexplicably at ease.
I fell asleep without even realizing it.
......
The next day, early morning.
The sky was bright.
Lu Qiqi was awakened by the noise outside. Lu Yao in her arms rubbed her eyes and slowly got up from the bed.
"Sister, what's going on outside?"
Lu Qiqi threw back the covers, a chill washing over her. She said, "I don't know, I'll go out and take a look. If you're sleepy, you can go back to sleep."
Lu Yao was awakened by the noise outside, and was wide awake. After getting dressed and doing a simple haircut, she transformed into her little shadow again, following her sister around.
"Qiqi, you've finally come out."
Li walked in front of Hu Jinfei, and when she saw Lu Qiqi, she immediately quickened her pace and walked over.
"Seventh Sister, your Aunt Zeng has suddenly developed a high fever that won't go down. Please help her take a look at her."
Hu Jinfei stood in front of Lu Qiqi. He walked faster than Li Shi because he was worried about Zeng Shi and had run over.
Lu Qiqi heard the child crying again, and looking behind Hu Jinfei, she saw Lu Shi holding a child.
The noise just now was the child's crying, which was extremely loud.
Lu Qiqi said, "The child is probably hungry. Auntie, take the child to Auntie's courtyard first and let Auntie breastfeed him."
If you don't have enough breast milk, you can make rice porridge; don't let your baby go hungry.
Hu Jinfei looked anxious and didn't have time to think about the awkwardness. He spoke faster than he thought, first thanking her, and then taking Lu Qiqi to his own courtyard.
As soon as Lu Yao stepped out of the house, she heard that her master was sick, so she quickly followed her sister and went together.
To save time, Lu Qiqi went to Zeng's house and asked Hu Jinfei why Zeng had suddenly fallen ill.
Hu Jinfei ran back and forth, and even though it was winter, large beads of sweat appeared on his forehead.
He said, "I don't know either. She was fine last night, but when I woke up this morning, I heard her talking nonsense."
Noticing something was wrong with her, I realized she was burning up with fever.
Upon hearing this, Lu Qiqi quickened her pace unconsciously. In this era, even a cold could be fatal, let alone for an older woman like Zeng.
As the group entered the Zeng family's house, they smelled a faint, delicate incense, its scent fresh and pleasant.
Hu Jinfei led Lu Qiqi to the bedside in the inner room. Looking at Zeng Shi's pale face, which was covered with fine beads of sweat, he whispered, "Hui Niang, I brought Qi Yatou here to treat your illness."
Lying on the bed, Zeng seemed not to hear anything, remaining completely still.
