Chapter 17: Finding He Shou Wu (Polygonum multiflorum)

Jiang Xingzhou quickly put the wild pheasant he was holding down and brought out a small table from the inner room.

After breakfast, Jiang Hua took out the herbs she had picked the day before and put them in the yard to dry. After washing the dishes, Jiang Xingzhou told them what to do and then went to Black Wind Mountain, saying he was going to take the prey from the traps to town to sell.

“Then I’ll go with you. I’ll also go up the mountain to pick some herbs to dry.” Jiang Hua carried yesterday’s basket out of the kitchen.

"Okay." Jiang Xingzhou glanced at Jiang Jingyi before nodding in agreement.

After receiving permission, Jiang Hua followed Jiang Xingzhou up Black Wind Mountain. The first two times she came to Black Wind Mountain, she was either with Aunt Liu or with Jiang Jingyi, and she didn't dare to go deeper into the outer area.

If they encountered a wild animal, she could run away on her own and was confident she could save the person, but she still didn't want to endanger the people around her.

With Jiang Xingzhou there, Jiang Hua felt reassured and continued walking, but she didn't go very far. Jiang Xingzhou pointed out a range and told them to stay in that area and not go too far.

"Stepmother, shall we continue picking the same herbs as yesterday?" Jiang Jingyi asked.

Jiang Hua nodded, and the little one immediately squatted down, searching around. She wasn't idle; because this place wasn't near the outer perimeter, the surrounding grass grew quite lush.

Jiang Hua looked around and searched, when suddenly a familiar plant caught her attention. Overjoyed, she quickly picked up a finger-thick twig from the ground and squatted down in front of the plant.

After plucking a leaf and examining it closely, she found a he shou wu (Polygonum multiflorum) just as she had suspected.

The he shou wu was growing in the soil. Jiang Hua carefully dug it up with the branch in her hand. Before long, a plump he shou wu was lying in her palm.

Jiang Hua picked a few palm-sized leaves, wrapped the he shou wu in her hand, and put it into her basket. Then she searched around and found two more plants.

She counted them and found that she had dug up three in total. The commotion she was making also caught Jiang Jingyi's attention. The little guy, holding the medicinal herbs he had picked, walked over curiously and looked at her.

"Stepmother, what's that in your hand?" Jiang Jingyi asked, looking at the he shou wu in Jiang Hua's hand that she hadn't yet put in.

“These are other types of medicinal herbs, more valuable than the herbs we picked yesterday,” Jiang Hua explained in layman’s terms.

Jiang Jing nodded, seemingly understanding but not quite.

Not long after, Jiang Xingzhou dragged over a wild goat weighing over 100 pounds. It seemed that this was the game he was going to take to town to sell today.

"Let's go, it's time to go down the mountain," Jiang Xingzhou said. It was almost noon, and the animals in the forest were starting to come out in large numbers.

“Okay.” Thinking of the three he shou wu (Polygonum multiflorum) in her basket, Jiang Hua nodded in agreement, preparing to go to town with Jiang Xingzhou later.

In the original owner's memories, there was no recollection of ever going to the town, so it seems she never went there.

After returning home, Jiang Xingzhou pushed out the cart in the yard and put the wild goat he had hunted from the mountain onto the cart.

Jiang Hua also took out the herbs from her basket to dry, but she didn't take out the Polygonum multiflorum from the basket.

"Jiang Xingzhou, can I go to town with you?" Jiang Hua asked as she walked over, then took out some he shou wu (Polygonum multiflorum) that she had dug up on the mountain from her basket. "I want to sell them to the pharmacy."

Jiang Xingzhou glanced at the he shou wu in Jiang Hua's hand: "It's a long way from here to the town; it takes an hour to walk there."

One hour? That would be two hours.

“I can walk,” Jiang Hua said.

Seeing Jiang Hua's insistence, Jiang Xingzhou did not refuse again. He took the initiative to put the basket on the cart and then put Jiang Jingyi on the cart as well.

The cart wasn't big; it carried wild goats and baskets, and when Jiang Jingyi got on, it was full.

Along the way, Jiang Xingzhou pushed the cart while Jiang Hua followed beside him. The two of them traveled along a different route, so they did not pass by the Xu family's houses.

As they passed by Xu Wanli's house, Li Dahua, who was sitting at the door, saw the wild goat on the cart and stared intently at it.

"Xiao Jiang, you're so lucky today, you actually caught a wild goat." Li Dahua walked towards them, swaying her hips as she held a handkerchief in her hand.

"Er Ya, you are really lucky. Not only did you get a son out of nowhere, but you also have such a capable husband. You are truly blessed!"

"So you think marrying Village Chief Xu is a bad fate?" Jiang Hua asked Li Dahua.

"If you're not happy with your life, then find someone else before you have children."

Jiang Hua's words were like a dagger to Li Dahua's heart. Everyone in Xujia Village knew that Xu Wanli and Li Dahua had been married for so many years, but there was still no sign of a child in her belly.

The villagers were saying that Li Dahua was a hen that couldn't lay eggs, and that if Xu Wanli weren't the village chief and had to set an example, he would have divorced Li Dahua long ago and married another woman to carry on the family line.

Right now, Li Dahua, whose sore spot had been hit by Jiang Hua, immediately exploded: "You Xu Erya, what nonsense are you spouting? I'll tear your mouth apart!"

However, before he could take a few steps forward, he was intimidated by Jiang Xingzhou's cold gaze and immediately stopped in his tracks, not daring to move.

"Let's go." Jiang Xingzhou pushed the cart again and set off.

An hour and a half later, Jiang Hua finally saw the entrance to Qing Shi Town. Along the way, she noticed that Jiang Xingzhou had deliberately slowed down to wait for her.

In fact, this one-and-a-half-hour journey was nothing to her, but her current body was not yet as physically capable as she had been in her previous life. Although she had soaked in the spiritual spring water, she was gradually recovering.

"Shall we go sell the wild goat first?" Jiang Hua asked, looking at the wild goat on the cart, and then took Jiang Jingyi down from the cart.

Jiang looked around at both sides of the street. There were many shops and mobile stalls on both sides of the street, all selling all kinds of things.

The game they hunted could be sold at a stall in the town market, or it could be sold to a restaurant. Jiang Xingzhou belonged to the latter category, as he had already told her on the way here.

Jiang Hua, holding Jiang Jingyi's hand, followed Jiang Xingzhou to a restaurant called Mingyuelou, with a large signboard that came into view.

There are two well-known restaurants in Qingshi Town: Mingyue Restaurant, which is right in front of us, and Guangfu Restaurant, which is opposite Mingyue Restaurant. Aunt Liu's son, Liu Tianming, works as an accountant at Guangfu Restaurant.

Both restaurants are branches that came from the capital. It is said that Mingyuelou opened first, and Guangfulou followed suit, opening right across from Mingyuelou.

The two businesses have always been rivals, but judging from the current situation, Guangfulou across the street is doing better.
