Chapter 46 Giving Up the Ginseng

“Then let’s do as Manager Shen says.” Jiang Hua didn’t haggle. “But please don’t tell anyone that I sold you these two ginseng roots.”

"These three are certain, and we will keep it a secret," Manager Shen said.

Then he had the same young apprentice fetch two long brocade boxes and put the two ginseng roots inside.

"Put this 500-year-old ginseng inside. I'll take it to the master later," Manager Shen said.

"Yes, shopkeeper." The apprentice quickly took the five-hundred-year-old ginseng from his shopkeeper.

"Miss Jiang, please wait a moment, I'll go get the silver notes," Manager Shen said, standing up.

After receiving the silver notes, Jiang Hua put them into her spatial storage and then took her basket to the main hall.

As soon as the curtain was lifted, a noisy commotion could be heard inside the pharmacy, and it was that familiar voice again.

"Put this ginseng in the cabinet." Manager Shen handed the more than two-hundred-year-old ginseng to the young apprentice in front of the counter, and finally weighed the herbs in Jiang Hua's basket.

"You must be Manager Shen from Mingdetang," Lin Shuyan asked politely as she stepped forward.

The young apprentice who had been dealing with her was stunned by how quickly she changed her expression. What was going on? She wasn't so gentle and kind just now.

"What's going on?" Manager Shen rarely turned his gaze to Lin Shuyan.

"Shopkeeper, this young lady says she wants to buy ginseng," the apprentice explained.

Just as Manager Shen was about to say, "Then let's sell it to her," he heard the medicine boy's words the next second.

"She said she had no money and wanted to pay on credit first," the apprentice said, somewhat embarrassed.

Manager Shen's face immediately darkened: "Young lady, are you here to cause trouble?"

"Manager Shen, saving a life is better than building a seven-story pagoda. You can't just stand by and watch someone die!" Lin Shuyan immediately slapped a heavy accusation on him.

"Young lady, we at the pharmacy don't know you," Manager Shen politely declined.

"cousin."

At this moment, Lin Shuyan turned her gaze to Jiang Hua, her eyes filled with pleading.

"Manager, the ginseng that Miss Jiang sent has been placed in the store." The young apprentice who had just placed the ginseng in the back room came out and said, unaware of the situation.

Manager Shen was completely flustered. Jiang Hua glanced at Manager Shen upon hearing this.

"Cousin, did you find ginseng? Quick, give it to me!" Lin Shuyan looked at Jiang Hua with hopeful eyes, her hands already excitedly grabbing Jiang Hua's arms.

“It’s already been sold to Mingdetang. If you need it, you can buy it from Mingdetang with your money.” Jiang Hua said as she pulled her hand away.

"Why did you sell it? How could you sell ginseng?" Lin Shuyan blurted out after hearing Jiang Hua's words.

“Why can’t I sell it? This is ginseng I dug up myself,” Jiang Hua retorted with a sneer.

"Don't you know I need ginseng to save my life?" Lin Shuyan said matter-of-factly.

"I don't know, what does it have to do with me?" Jiang Hua said lightly.

"How can it not concern you? You don't want to disappoint Brother Xuan, do you? Just return the money you paid for the ginseng to the shopkeeper, bring the ginseng back to me, and I'll put in a good word for you with Brother Xuan," Lin Shuyan said, bringing up Zhou Yingxuan.

"You're sick," Jiang Hua said, glancing at Lin Shuyan with a puzzled look before taking a step back.

Seeing that she couldn't reason with Jiang Hua, Lin Shuyan glared at her with venomous eyes, then reluctantly took out a fine jade pendant from her sleeve.

"Shopkeeper, can I pawn this jade pendant here in exchange for that ginseng?" Lin Shuyan handed the jade pendant to Shopkeeper Shen.

Manager Shen took the jade pendant and examined it carefully. The jade was of the highest quality. He then turned it over and found the character "叶" (Ye) engraved on the other side of the pendant.

Manager Shen's expression hardened for a moment, then he said, "Alright."

Afterwards, Manager Shen instructed the apprentice to hand over the ginseng that was over two hundred years old to Lin Shuyan.

"Shopkeeper, please keep this jade pendant safe. I will come back to redeem it." Lin Shuyan took the ginseng and then walked towards Jiang Hua.

"Cousin, you are so heartless. You actually let someone die for money. I really misjudged you before."

After making those harsh remarks, Lin Shuyan took the ginseng and left with a few quick steps.

"Miss Jiang, I'm really sorry about what happened just now." Manager Shen said to Jiang Hua after regaining his senses, and then glared at the big-mouthed medicine boy from before.

"Miss Jiang, I didn't know that girl knew you. I'm so sorry." After receiving a look from his shopkeeper, the big-mouthed medicine boy quickly apologized to Jiang Hua.

"It's alright, you didn't mean it." Jiang Hua waved her hand, said something to Manager Shen, and then left.

"Huahua, why did you take so long?"

Upon seeing Jiang Hua return, Aunt Liu quickly asked.

"Something came up and I was held up," Jiang Hua replied.

"Oh, right, Huahua, the waiter from Mingyue Tower has already come and taken away those eight salt-baked chickens," Aunt Liu said to Jiang Hua, as if she had just remembered something.

Jiang Hua nodded, then glanced at the salt-baked chicken feet on the stall; there weren't many left.

“Jiang Hua, while you were away, the blacksmith shopkeeper came by and said that the iron plate you ordered is finished,” Liu Tianming reminded her.

"good."

The group waited another fifteen minutes until the last of the chicken feet were sold out. After packing up their stall, Jiang Hua bought some fresh chicken feet from the chicken stall before finally going to the blacksmith shop to retrieve the custom-made iron plate.

"Jiang Hua, what are you doing?" Liu Tianming asked curiously.

"It'll be a secret for now, I'll tell you later," Jiang Hua said with a smile.

"By the way, Uncle Liu, when are you free? I'd like to make a pushcart for setting up a stall."

"I'll talk to your Uncle Liu later. He used to be a carpenter when he was young," Aunt Liu said.

“Okay, thank you, Auntie,” Jiang Hua said.

"Oh, don't be so polite. It's just a small cart. It's easy. Just tell your Uncle Liu what kind of cart you want it to be," Aunt Liu said generously.

Before heading home, he went to Mingyue Tower again and handed over the three hundred taels for the shop to Manager Bai.

"Manager Bai, do you know any craftsmen?" Jiang Hua inquired.

“Miss Jiang, this question has stumped me. The decoration of our Mingyue Tower was all done by craftsmen from the Shen family, and they were in charge of it,” Manager Bai explained.

"Okay, I'll look for it again." Jiang Hua prepared to turn and leave.

“Why didn’t Miss Jiang come to me with this need? It just so happens that our Shen family’s craftsmen are in the county town.” Shen Qingchuan’s voice came from the second-floor corridor.

Jiang Hua looked up and saw Shen Qingchuan waving a folding fan in his hand, looking down at her like a refined gentleman.
