"I understand, stepmother. I will stay home obediently." Jiang Jingyi nodded and went back to sit down and read.
Jiang Hua didn't sit idle either; she took out a medical book and started reading it. The medical book was borrowed from Mingdetang.
Once word got out that wolves were roaming the outskirts of the mountains, the village would be deserted by sunset.
At this moment, a figure appeared outside Jiang Hua's residence, circling the courtyard wall and scattering some unknown powder in his hand.
It wasn't until they reached the gate that they could clearly see the face of the shadowy figure. Xu Yaozu had a gloomy expression and was staring venomously at the closed doors of the mansion.
He clapped his hands again, shook off the powder, and a malicious smile appeared on his lips before he tiptoed away.
"Tsk tsk tsk, that's so vicious."
In the distance, two identical girls sat on a tree. Their clothes were adorned with silver bells that jingled in the wind. Their delicate, white feet swayed back and forth along the hem of their blue skirts.
"Keep it down, don't disturb the people inside." One of the slightly aloof faces spoke calmly, her voice as cool as a breeze, making one feel unapproachable.
"Sister, I understand!" They have the same face, but their personalities are worlds apart.
The next day, Jiang Hua went out, and as soon as she stepped out the door, she smelled a strange odor in the air.
"Can you smell anything?" Jiang Hua walked around the courtyard walls on both sides.
"No!" Granny Luo said, looking puzzled.
But Jiang Hua didn't give her time to wonder. She walked around, and the smell didn't disappear until she reached the wall of the third courtyard.
“Huahua”.
"Bai Heng?"
Jiang Hua turned around following the sound and saw Bai Heng walking towards her, followed by a group of soldiers carrying bows and arrows and broadswords.
"Who are you here?" Bai Heng nodded, watching her pick up a bit of soil from the ground and bring it to her nose to smell.
"The taste is a bit strange."
Upon hearing this, Bai Heng followed suit and picked up a handful of soil, but his brows furrowed after smelling the strange odor of the soil.
"What's wrong?"
"This powder is usually scattered in traps by adventurous hunters to attract prey in the mountains."
"Because people don't know if it will attract wild beasts, very few people use it anymore."
"What if it attracts wolves?" Jiang Hua's face suddenly turned cold. She threw away the mud in her hand and ordered Granny Luo to bring out water to wash it off.
"Attracting wolves will naturally have the same effect."
"Who has Huahua offended this time?" Bai Heng gestured for the soldiers behind him to go out and patrol, then looked at her and asked with a smile.
"That's a good question, I'd like to know that too."
"Want to come in for a cup of tea?" Jiang Hua invited Bai Heng beside her, seeing that Shuanghua and the others were already washing the courtyard.
Bai Heng didn't hesitate and followed him inside.
Even as the sun set and everyone was eating, Xu Yaozu sat restlessly at the dinner table.
Thinking that the powder he had scattered last night had probably been blown away by the wind, he realized that he would be returning to the academy tomorrow, and it would be difficult to find an opportunity to strike then.
"Yaozu, aren't you going to eat? Where are you going?" Madam Xu asked, looking at her grandson, who had suddenly put down his bowl and stood up.
"I can't eat, let's go for a walk."
"Don't go out! What if you run into wolves?" Xu objected.
However, Xu's words no longer carried any weight in this family, and Xu Yaozu ignored her and walked out on his own.
"You're always so talkative. Don't you know how much pressure Yaozu is under in his studies? Why are you spouting nonsense? Even eating can't shut you up." Madam Xu glared at Madam Xu with a reproachful look.
"After you finish eating, brew your medicine and drink it yourself. If I find out you've missed a day, I'll beat you to death!"
"I understand, Mother-in-law." Madam Xu nodded, somewhat aggrieved.
...
In the dining hall, several people who were eating suddenly heard a wolf howl.
"Hehehe, here you come, you vicious female supporting character, you've been waiting for a long time!" The long-absent system display let out a cold laugh, and then arrogant words appeared in Jiang Hua's mind.
"Granny Luo, take A-Yi back to the room and stay there. No matter what noise you hear, don't come out." Jiang Hua put down her chopsticks, exchanged a glance with Bai Heng, and walked out the door.
As soon as the door opened, Xu Yaozu's figure came into view, with a ferocious smile on his face and a packet of powder in his hand.
Jiang Hua kicked him away, and inadvertently, the powder she was holding flew all over herself.
"Woo—!" The wolf's howl grew closer and closer.
Jiang Hua watched as the distant green lights drew ever closer to her house. All the houses in the village extinguished their candles, plunging the entire village into darkness.
"Wolves are coming," Bai Heng said with certainty, and there were more than a dozen wolves with their green eyes, so numerous and dense that it sent chills down one's spine.
Upon hearing this, Xu Yaozu, who was lying on the ground, felt a chill run through his body. He scrambled to his feet and ran, but before he had gone far, his collar was grabbed and he was violently thrown against the courtyard wall.
"Sir, I've counted them, there are 17 wolves in total!" The soldier with the broadsword quickly came over to report.
"Ready at any time!"
Finally, they arrived. Someone made a noise, and the two women, swords in hand, lunged at the pack of wolves that were charging towards them.
Archers and soldiers hiding in the shadows also came out, and soon, the sounds of fighting and howling wolves rang out in the village.
This pack of wolves appeared at an inopportune time and were exceptionally fierce, as if they had taken some kind of stimulant. They fought with increasing ferocity, and some of the wolves were even stabbed, yet their fighting power remained extraordinary.
Bai Heng weaved through the wolf pack while keeping an eye on Jiang Hua. He was relieved to see that Jiang Hua was fighting the wolves with ease and that her moves were more powerful than before.
Half an hour later, some of the officers and soldiers had scratches on their bodies from being clawed by wolves.
Jiang Hua counted the wolves lying on the ground: fourteen, fifteen, fifteen, seventeen?
"Stop counting, those two wolves went into your yard."
A crisp sound came from the tree. Jiang Hua didn't have time to think about it and turned to enter the courtyard.
Inside the third courtyard, Jiang Jingyi was protected by Granny Luo and Shuanghua and a few others. They didn't know how the wolves had gotten in and even broken open the door to their locked room.
Fortunately, two men in black appeared out of nowhere and lured the two wolves away from them.
However, the two men in black in the courtyard were already on the verge of collapse. Two wolves were staring intently at them, clearly regarding the two men in black as their prey.
With a loud groan, Jiang Jingyi heard a muffled groan before Luo Mama covered his eyes.
When Jiang Jingyi removed Luo Mama's hand from his eyes, one of the two men in black was already gone.
