Chapter 43 The Origin of Huixin

"Huixin, what are you doing here, a monk?" Li Xuanzu asked curiously. According to the memories in Qian Gang's body, weren't these monks the ones who preferred to close their doors during times of chaos?

"Seeing the suffering of all living beings, this old monk went down the mountain to do what he could." Huixin cleared up the misunderstanding and spoke very amiably, smiling and approachable.

"I see. You are indeed quite noble." Li Xuanzu nodded.

“You flatter me, benefactor. In chaotic times, how can one talk about escaping the world? Since we rely on the offerings of the people for our livelihood, we should naturally do our part for them.”

Li Xuanzu stared at Huixin, but found that he was not lying.

The eyes are the windows to the soul, and with Li Xuanzu's divine sense, he could observe things with remarkable detail, making it almost impossible for anyone to lie to him.

"Master, you have a wonderful mindset. I, Li Xuanzu, admire you." Li Xuanzu was not a good person, but he did not think that such selfless dedication to others was foolish. On the contrary, he greatly admired this kind of person.

If someone weaker than you does something you can't do, Li Xuanzu won't say anything, no matter what.

Huixin twirled the prayer beads in her hand, chuckling to herself.

"I wonder where you are headed next? If it's convenient, could you point me in the right direction? Perhaps I could even accompany you for a while."

"I don't know. We'll go wherever there are more zombies. If you share the same goal, Master, we can walk together for a while." Li Xuanzu did not refuse Huixin's invitation to travel together.

Although there was a risk of revealing his strength, Li Xuanzu felt very comfortable talking to this monk.

He is a very capricious person who does whatever he wants. If you are weaker than him, you have to put up with it. That's why Li Xuanzu didn't let Leng An and the others come with him.

We can't talk to each other.

Afterwards, the group headed towards the area that had not yet been cleared, leading a dozen or so survivors.

Huixin ate a compressed biscuit and began to tell her story.

He came from a temple called Guichan Temple, and he was the abbot of the temple.

He is almost eighty years old this year. When he was young, his family was so poor that they could not afford to eat. His parents had no choice but to send him to a temple in the nearby mountains.

In those days, people couldn't even afford to eat. Huixin's family sent her to a temple just to save themselves a mouth to feed, because human traffickers wouldn't even consider sending their own child.

However, Huixin knew nothing of this; he only knew that his parents told him that if he followed his master to learn Buddhism, he would have food to eat.

A three- or four-year-old child misses his parents after being away from home for just one day and keeps thinking about sneaking back home. But his family sends him back to the temple time and time again, saying they don't want him anymore and will break his legs if he comes back.

Huixin looked at the stick in her father's hand and was frightened, so she could only run back to the temple.

Decades passed like this. The village at the foot of the mountain was gone, his master died, the temple's name was changed, and everything changed.

Having nothing, Huixin could only chant scriptures and eat vegetarian food every day.

He had served in the army and fought on the battlefield, but after the war ended, he kept his achievements hidden and returned to Guichan Temple to become an abbot.

Decades later, with the outbreak of the zombie virus and the arrival of the apocalypse, he had taken in many ordinary people being hunted by zombies and saved many lives.

After the eerie entry, someone committed suicide in the temple. Huixin was performing a religious ceremony when the eerie entity possessed her. As a result, golden light appeared on Huixin's body, and a long Buddhist chant came from the temple. This not only dispelled the eerie entity but also awakened a "spirit" within Huixin.

However, Huixin initially thought it was a manifestation of Buddha and didn't think much of it. After all, such an absurd thing as the end of the world had happened, so nothing would be surprising.

It wasn't until Leng An posted news about psychics and exorcists online that reached Guichan Temple that Huixin realized the power within her was not a manifestation of Buddha, but rather the result of an exorcist who had awakened innate abilities.

Without a second thought, he dropped the abbot's staff, packed some dry food and water, and resolutely pushed open the temple gate to go down the mountain to save the world.

The people in the temple vaguely saw a huge phantom of a Buddha appear behind Huixin. They rubbed their eyes and found that Huixin had already gone down the mountain.

These days, Huixin has been saving people almost non-stop. The spirits or ghost servants on the exorcists can cause some damage to the zombies, but it is not obvious.

For example, if Huixin attacked Li Xuanzu, even if Li Xuanzu didn't block, he wouldn't be seriously injured given his physical strength.

However, "spirits" seem to exist innately to kill the supernatural. Exorcists who are born with "spirits" are mostly from Buddhism and Taoism. It is rumored that great meritorious people from other religions will also awaken their spirits.

Huixin saves people without asking anything in return. He treats everyone equally, regardless of their character or moral character, even if they eat their own kind in order to survive.

Perhaps some evildoers will lay down their weapons because of this, but most of the evildoers saved by Huixin are like releasing tigers back into the mountains, causing endless trouble in the future.

Some people commit evil out of necessity, but others do so purely to satisfy their perverse desires.

Even so, Huixin continued to save people, and the phantom of the Buddha statue behind her grew ever larger and more solid.
