Chapter 148 When the Past Rekindles

The girl was wrapped in a thin women's coat, which was obviously from You Shenyu. Lai Hongyi took off the coat and handed it to You Shenyu, whose arms were as tender as lotus roots, and asked him to tie it around the girl's waist as a skirt.

The alley was dimly lit. After she had at least maintained her dignity, he asked the two of them to get in the car. Lai Hongyi then said, "What on earth is going on here?"

It wouldn't have mattered if he hadn't asked, but when he did, it seemed like he had touched the girl's sore spot. She sat in the back seat, sobbing in a very suppressed manner.

You Shenyu patted her shoulder, then took a deep breath and sneered, "What else could it be? Forced into prostitution."

Lai Hongyi's eyelids twitched, and he suppressed the panic in his heart. He decided not to ask for details and asked for directions first: "Where are we going now?"

"Go back to the hotel and hide in your room."

Since he had decided to come, Lai Hongyi was mentally prepared to get into trouble. He stopped making noise and immediately drove to the hotel.

The town was really small. It took him five minutes to get here, and it should only take five minutes to get back. But just as he started the engine and walked less than a hundred meters, he saw a bright light in the distance. People and cars suddenly appeared out of nowhere on the street where there were originally only a few pedestrians. They were patrolling at the other end of the street and setting up checkpoints to intercept passing vehicles.

Lai Hongyi really wanted to step on the accelerator and turn around and leave, but turning around now would undoubtedly be a sign of trying to cover up his mistake.

"Don't be anxious, drive slowly." You Shenyu calmly held Lai Hongyi steady while soothing the girl, saying softly, "Don't make any noise, hide by my legs, and take your time."

Wait until the girl curled up under the seat, then gently put his legs over the girl, lift his knees up and level with the seat in front, then use a blanket to cover his thighs, and use the dim light to hide the truth.

Reporter Lai's entire body tensed up. He felt that what he had encountered was too sudden and unusual. He was living in a trance one second, and the next he was forced to play out this terrifying drama.

As their vehicle slowly approached the human wall blocking the car, the person conducting the inspection arrived as scheduled.

They are not police officers, but they are extremely rampant. They block the road with things and will not let anyone who does not cooperate pass. They also treat the person differently based on their situation. If they are unfamiliar with the person or the person does not have a strong background, they will knock on the window rudely and act as if they are going to smash the car if they disagree with the person. If the person is powerful, they will be friendly or simply not stop them.

Unfortunately, Lai Hongyi belongs to the former.

A tall man leaned against the roof of the car, banging on the window with his palms downwards, yelling at him to open the door.

Lai Hongyi certainly wouldn't open the door. He slowly rolled down the window. The man opened his mouth to curse, but suddenly a hand slapped him on the head. A gentle but sinister voice rang out, "Are you crazy? This is our car, can't you recognize it? If you break it, you'll have to sell your ass to get money to repair it."

He saw the man who had spoken in the rearview mirror. He was tall and well-made, handsome, but with a sinister expression. The man walked over, saw Lai Hongyi's face, and smiled calmly. He leaned down and said, "Isn't this reporter Lai? It's so late. Where did you come from?"

Lai Hongyi's mind went blank for a moment, not knowing what excuse to come up with. He forced a smile and said, "Just wandering around."

You Shenyu, who was standing behind him, suddenly spoke up and said coldly, "I just finished my work."

The man smiled slightly, walked to the back row, and asked politely, "What's so important that you have to do it so late at night?"

You Shenyu simply rolled down the car window, patted the cushion on his legs, and said, "Why don't you lift it up and take a look? You'll know what we're doing after you see it."

Lai Hongyi had never expected her to be so bold, and his heart seemed to be in his throat. Only You Shenyu in the back seat fearlessly stared at the man. The man looked away, searching the seat, and then saw a piece of underwear that had been removed. He smiled knowingly and said, "Oh, so this is what you did, a man and a woman making love, not surprising, not surprising."

Lai Hongyi reacted quickly, grinning and saying, "There are hotels everywhere, which makes me lose interest. I'd rather have some excitement outside."

"I understand." The man smiled gently.

Lai Hongyi, fearing he would continue to delve into the matter, changed the subject and asked, "I'm here to do some work. What are you doing so busy at night? Look at the cars you stopped. They're filled with important people. Aren't you afraid they'll get angry if you stop them like this?"

"They'll understand," the man said with a smile. "Pu Town used to be a little-known town with few households. Now it's different. The number of tourists has increased dramatically this year, and too many people can easily lead to trouble. So we're sending people to help the police maintain order to prevent any riots."

Maintaining order... what a clever trick! Lai Hongyi cursed inwardly, but smiled on the surface and said, "Everyone's worked hard. It's late at night and there probably won't be many people here. Why don't you rest early?"

"It's not hard work. We're here to serve you. We received a last-minute notice that a wanted criminal had fled near Pu Town, so we're here to investigate," the man said. "So, although it may be a bit offensive, could you please open the trunk and let us take a look?"

"No problem," Lai Hongyi smiled slightly and helped open the trunk. After they finished checking, he would let them go.

"By the way," the man said before leaving, "my boss was very pleased with your article and praised it highly, and asked me to take good care of it. This is my business card. My last name is Li. If you need anything, even if you're away from Pu Town, as long as you're on the island, you can reach me using the contact information above."
