Chapter 22 On Books

Chen Tinghan was a little surprised. He exchanged glances with Wang Jinling, the corners of his lips curled up slightly as he said, "I don't think it's fair."

Wang Jinling looked at him quietly, as if trying to discern his thoughts from his eyes, and then uttered a small sound: "Hmm?"

"I've only lived for sixteen or seventeen years. How many stages have I gone through in life? I can finish my story in just a few minutes over breakfast." Chen Tinghan said slowly, "I'm almost completely transparent in your eyes, but you're still so mysterious in mine. You see, this is so unfair."

"You underestimate yourself and overestimate me," Wang Jinling said calmly. "But you're right, this isn't fair. Should I answer whatever you want to know about me?"

Then they fell silent. Wang Jinling's expression remained unchanged, but the man who was supposed to get what he wanted frowned, his face furrowed in anxiety rather than anger. Could it be that one of the answers he'd been searching for half his life would finally be revealed in this pleasant chat?

The girl was smart. Although she didn't have a pair of sharp eyes that could see through his true thoughts, she saw something and couldn't help laughing. "You are really an awkward person."

"You don't want to listen to me directly. Do you think that's boring?"

Chen Tinghan paused for a moment before finally saying, "Two people, one on one, telling each other about their hobbies and experiences. If they also talk about their savings, then isn't that just a blind date?"

Wang Jinling's expression suddenly became strange, and she couldn't help but burst into a clear and hearty laugh.

Chen Tinghan was embarrassed and scratched his head. He saw Wang Jinling couldn't stop laughing and walking faster and faster. He walked forward quickly, and she just stopped. The two of them stood side by side in front of an old bookstore.

"Is it that funny?" Chen Tinghan said in a feigned anger.

The girl finally stopped laughing, wiped the corners of her eyes with her ring finger, and said, "Hmm, not funny."

He coughed twice, looked up at the bookstore sign, and said casually, "To put it another way, would you rather be a search engine that answers all your questions, or a mysterious book that needs to be deciphered?"

"Compared to that, books are still better." Wang Jinling walked into the bookstore and said, "Then how do you plan to interpret me?"

Chen Tinghan was speechless again. He had been interpreting Wang Jinling for fifteen years, but that was the future Wang Jinling. If the current her was not the future her, how should Chen Tinghan deal with it? He had never really thought about this question.

She didn't expect to get any answers, so she wandered around the bookstore slowly.

The bookstore is as shabby and old as the street. The books are not classified and are piled up randomly and disorderly. Some of them are even on the ground, left to be trampled on, turning black and yellow, and no one cares about them.

The store was not very popular. There were only children from nearby residents and a few other people in the store. They just looked but didn't buy anything. They sat on the floor without any particularity, and their books were torn to pieces.

"What kind of books do you like?" Wang Jinling asked leisurely.

"I don't read many books." Chen Tinghan shrugged.

Wang Jinling picked up a book, her long eyelashes fluttering slightly at the title. The heavy aroma of books and the lingering air of decadence in the shop made her exhale softly. She said slowly, "This is the cleanest book in the store. It's even unopened."

The girl reached out her hand and tilted the cover of the book, allowing Chen Tinghan to clearly see the title: "The Republic." Hmm, quite a good sleep-inducing read.

She smiled and said, "It sounds nice to fall asleep to one of the cornerstones of European philosophy."

Then Wang Jinling picked up another book and said that this book also looked brand new, but the cover had been removed. The first few pages had signs of damage, but there was no sign of it being turned later.

Chen Tinghan took two steps forward and was tripped by a child sitting in the corner. He almost fell on Wang Jinling, but it was just a close call. He grabbed the heavy bookcase and, with incredible body control, stopped in front of the girl. She didn't move at all. They were so close that Chen Tinghan could even smell the faint fragrance wafting from her neck and shoulders.

This was a complete surprise. Even though Chen Tinghan had a thick skin, he felt a burn. Her eyes were calm, but she covered her lips with the book, which made it more obvious. Unfortunately, the earlobe that was not covered turned slightly red.

The wall of this girl's heart is not as thick as imagined.

"Ahem." Chen Tinghan changed the subject: "I don't know what kind of person, or what kind of mental dilemma they would be forced into, would choose such a cowardly suicide. I can't understand it, so I think it's bullshit." *Note: This represents the protagonist's opinion only.

Wang Jinling paused for a moment before putting the book back in its place. The cover of the book read "No Longer Human".

Then she pointed to another book.

Chen Tinghan took a closer look and said casually, "I'm not familiar with Latin American history."

"So you've seen it all." Wang Jinling said with a slight smile on her lips.

"You only know the facts, but not the reasons." Chen Tinghan said, "And the books you chose are a bit too profound."

"I just happened to have them handy, so I picked them up randomly. Some classmates often ask me if I've read that or that. These three books come up particularly frequently." Wang Jinling said, "I guess not many people have finished them."

Chen Tinghan smacked his lips, not knowing what to say. He wanted to mock him, but he himself used to be a fake intellectual.

He pondered for a moment, then tried to excuse himself: "They're just idle books. Most people aren't as precocious as you."

She said angrily, "I think you're still calling me prematurely old."

"I dare not, I dare not." Chen Tinghan smiled apologetically.

"What if I want you to choose a book here?" Wang Jinling didn't argue with him. She flipped her hair and said lazily, "Pick one that fits my book."
