With a "snap," the lights in the yard came on.
Wen Shu, holding a mop, deliberately lowered her voice: "Who?!"
"Wen Shu?!"
Wen Shu was taken aback; it was Li Duo's voice outside the door.
She didn't dare open the door rashly, and asked through the door, "Mr. Li? What do you want in the middle of the night?"
"Open the door."
Li Duo spoke.
Wen Shu glanced in the direction of the bedroom, afraid of waking up her grandmother and Rou Rou.
"Just tell me what it is."
Li Duo pounded on the door. "Open the door!"
The noise was so loud that people upstairs turned on their lights.
Wen Shu gripped the mop in her hand and reached out to open the iron gate to the yard.
Li Duo stood outside the door. Hearing the door open, he looked up and stared intently at her. "Why didn't you answer the phone?"
Wen Shu's expression turned somewhat unpleasant, wondering if this person had something wrong with their brain.
Answer the phone?
Do you really think she's online 24/7?
"Mr. Li, I'm here in the middle of the night banging on your door to ask why you didn't answer your phone outside of working hours?"
She had a tense expression, was holding a stick in her hand, and had bandages wrapped around one of her ankles.
Li Duo's heart, which had been hanging in mid-air, finally settled down when he saw her appear before him.
No trace of her was found along the entire route of Fudoyama. It was as if she had vanished into thin air, disappearing from Fudoyama in a time that could not possibly have been completed.
There are no surveillance cameras on the mountain road around Budongshan, or perhaps no one in the Li family ever thought that someone would walk down the mountain.
It wasn't until the very end that they remembered the ambulance had left from a similar section of the road.
The trail led to the hospital, where she treated her foot injury and left.
Even though he knew she was probably safe, Li Duo still had to see it with his own eyes and confirm it before he could feel at ease.
He was full of passion and worry, but she completely misinterpreted his feelings.
That inexplicable feeling of urgency and anger made him feel like he had a fishbone stuck in his throat and had to get it out.
"Shouldn't you be? You're a company employee; it's your responsibility to keep your phone on 24/7!"
"We didn't ask you to work 24/7. If we need to contact you for any reason, shouldn't you provide assistance?"
Wen Shu scoffed in exasperation: "I'm just an assistant, only responsible for your trivial matters during work hours. Did you really think I'd be responsible for what you wear tomorrow?"
As she spoke, she reached out to close the door.
Li Duo simply wedged his hand between the cracks in the door, and the two doors slammed shut, trapping his palm.
"suck--"
Li Duo gasped and immediately squatted down.
Wen Shu hurriedly reopened the door and remained silent for a long time.
Actually, she was a little panicked, thinking that he was sick. He came to her house in the middle of the night to cause trouble and even deliberately hurt himself. Was he planning to blame her?
She gripped the door with both hands, stubbornly holding on to her spot.
Li Duo squatted on the ground, his palms visibly swollen.
Wen Shu: "..."
The driver helped Li Duo up and looked up at Wen Shu: "Miss Wen, couldn't you at least let Mr. Li rest for a bit?"
Wen Shu looked puzzled. It was the middle of the night, two in the morning, and he wanted to rest in her yard?
Li Duo didn't say anything, but held up his hand in front of her. Whether it was unintentional or intentional, his swollen hand was waving in front of her.
Wen Shu held her breath, opened a door, and stepped aside.
The driver helped Li Duo into the courtyard.
Seeing a small stool, the driver helped Li Duo sit down, then left the yard himself and closed the gate behind him.
Wen Shu had a tense expression; she had been woken up from her sleep, and her temper was already at its worst.
She was really sleepy.
Wen Shu limped toward the living room, and Li Duo quickly grabbed her wrist, "Wen Shu!"
Wen Shu turned around and looked at him coldly. "I'll go get the mosquito coils."
She opened the door and went inside. Li Duo turned around and saw a cake box on the table.
He paused for a moment, and when Wen Shu brought out the mosquito coils and squatted down to light them, he asked, "Whose birthday is it?"
Wen Shu didn't even look up. "Grandma."
Li Duo looked down at the top of her head. "I misunderstood you."
Wen Shu chuckled softly, "I'm used to it."
These three words were like sharp arrows, instantly piercing Li Duo, making him feel pain even when he was breathing.
“Wanwan wronged you this time. I was only thinking about helping her keep her baby…”
“Mr. Li, it’s two in the morning, yet you’re lounging in my yard talking to me about these trivial things.”
Wen Shu interrupted him, "Aren't other people's family members people? Isn't other people's time time? Are all people of your social class so self-righteous?"
She moved the mosquito coil to his feet and said, "If you want to rest, then rest. When you leave, please close the gate to the yard for me."
Li Duo looked up at her, and Wen Shu glanced back at him. "Mr. Li, I am a person, and I need to sleep."
Li Duo grabbed her arm and said, "I just want to make up for my mistake."
Wen Shu was amused and exasperated. "President Li, how do you plan to make amends?"
"I missed my grandma's birthday. I couldn't spend her annual birthday with Rou Rou."
"Because I have to go to a strange and remote godforsaken place to deliver a piece of clothing that you've labeled as trash!"
Li Duo wouldn't let go, "I know you're angry right now..."
Wen Shu shook her head. "President Li, you're still so self-righteous. Just like how you assume I went to Mount Budong for your sake."
Li Duo fell silent.
After a long pause, he said, "I promised last time that it would be the last time I would protect Wanwan, and that promise still stands."
Wen Shu simply chuckled, "President Li, I'm someone who only dares to believe in myself."
