Chapter 143 Providing Assistance, A Close Call

Chapter 143 Providing Assistance, A Close Call

Mark suddenly appeared in the living room, panting, which surprised all three of them.

Lai and Mark weren't close friends. If you think about it carefully, they only ran into each other a few times during the time they were selling vegetables early in the morning, and they exchanged greetings.

He didn't know why Mark wanted him to save Ivy, or how he was supposed to save her.

"What happened? Mark, don't panic, explain yourself first."

“Ivy went into premature labor, and Grandma Afu asked me to go to town to find a doctor who knows magic. But we haven’t heard from Dr. Black since he went out, and we don’t know where the other doctor went either.”

Mark's voice was choked with emotion.

"Ivy is bleeding a lot, she looks very bad. I know, I know you also know wood magic, please save Ivy!"

Mark pleaded as if he had grasped at a last straw.

Neil glanced at his brother, then at Lamb, who was also looking at Ray.

Theoretically speaking, Ray shouldn't get involved in this kind of thing.

First of all, his magic isn't that powerful; going there would probably just be a formality, and wouldn't have any effect whatsoever.

Secondly, for Ivy, he was a stranger. During childbirth, even male family members would be kicked out of the delivery room. If he went there rashly and any subsequent entanglements arose, he would not be able to face people in the village and could easily ruin their reputation.

Ray was well aware of his own level of magic.

He can only play a supporting role, but he is unlikely to succeed in providing emergency relief.

Mark was still pleading, which reminded Ray of Iru back then.

"My magic isn't very strong; I only know healing spells. I don't know if I can save her. What if I fail..."

"It's okay! It's okay if it doesn't work! It's better than lying in bed waiting to die. Don't worry, no matter what the outcome, I won't blame you!"

Seeing that Ray's attitude was softening, Mark quickly made a promise.

He had no other choice but to turn to Lai for help. He knew he was putting Lai in a difficult position, but the situation was urgent and he couldn't worry about that now.

After much hesitation, Lei sighed and made his decision.

"Let's go."

"Thank you, thank you!"

Lei got up and followed Mark.

Lamb looked conflicted and secretly tugged at Ray's sleeve.

Mark is a good person, but his mother, Maggie, is a notorious shrew. Lamb felt that, putting everything else aside, Ray could help Ivy, but...

Ray winked at Lamb, then followed him.

Watching the two leave, Lamb hurriedly tried to leave as well, but was caught by the quick-thinking Neil.

"Brother Lamb, where are you going? Can you take me with you?"

"No, you stay home and take care of the house. She's having a baby and you're just a kid, you can't go. I'm going home to get reinforcements so I don't get hurt again. Neil, don't wander off, or I'll worry when I come back and you're not home."

"All right."

"Don't run around!"

"knew!"

Lamb left in a hurry. He felt his brain wasn't working properly and he didn't know what to do. He decided to tell his family; they would surely know what to do.

"How is it? How is it!?"

When Mark got home, Maggie brought out another basin of bloody water.

Maggie looked unwell, and her eyes were vacant.

"The baby hasn't been born yet."

It's been almost three hours, and Ivy has been bleeding the whole time, but the baby still hasn't been born. If it drags on any longer, it could result in the death of both mother and child.

"I brought the magician with me. Quickly ask Grandma Afu what to do."

Maggie glanced at Lai, frowned, handed the basin to Mark, and went back to the delivery room to ask Af.

"Grandma Afu said we could give it a try."

Maggie went in and out quickly each time, keeping the door tightly closed.

Mark had no objection to this.

Since they were strangers, Ray asked Anna for a long handkerchief to cover his eyes, and then, with Maggie's help, entered the delivery room.

"Why are you covering your eyes? How can you see people like that?"

Afu complained briefly, but knowing that this was really putting the young man in a difficult position, she shut up and said nothing more.

Ivy was exhausted. She stared blankly at the ceiling, her hair and clothes soaked through. Her lower body was numb with pain, and her stomach was throbbing with pain.

Am I going to die?

Such thoughts kept lingering in her mind.

"I only know healing spells, I don't know if this will help her."

"Well, it's better than nothing. She's bleeding heavily, the baby is in an off-center position, making delivery difficult, and she's had so much trouble and doesn't have much strength left. You might be able to help her, but I can't guarantee anything."

"good."

The healing spell requires touching the vicinity of the wound, which is somewhat difficult.

After thinking for a moment, Ray asked if he could touch the mother's belly. Maggie agreed before he began to use the healing spell.

Maggie held onto Ray's hand and made him place it on her abdomen. Ray felt something moving under his hand.

It should be a child.

Thinking about this, Lei felt a little nervous.

He calmed himself down, and with a thought, a grass-green light gathered in his palm, which eased Ivy's furrowed brows.

Maggie was stunned by the scene before her; in all her years, this was the first time she had been so close to magic.

She quickly recovered and assisted Afu. Afu, unaffected, continued to help Ivy with childbirth.

Outside the delivery room, Linda and Lamb stormed in, looking quite menacing. Seeing the restless group in the living room, she immediately asked them a question.

Where is my nephew?

"Aunt Linda, please have a seat."

Mark respectfully invited Linda to sit down, and Mark's father also greeted Linda with a smile.

"In the room."

“This child, he didn’t even tell his family about such a big thing. He’s grown up and has more ideas of his own, but we can’t just ignore him, can we?”

“You’re right, you’re right. Mark, quickly get your aunt some water.”

"good."

Mark's father said he knew perfectly well what Linda meant by storming over so aggressively the moment Ray arrived. But knowing this, he would never show it.

Linda cursed him inwardly as an old fox. She took the hot water Mark handed her, drank it while chatting casually with Mark's father, without revealing the purpose of her visit, and just sat quietly in the living room waiting.

In the delivery room, Ivy's condition improved after receiving treatment with the healing technique.

Her bleeding decreased and she regained some strength.

Ivy raised her upper body and saw the hand on her stomach, and the owner of the hand standing to the side.

He was a complete stranger.

Ivy frowned, and Grandma Afu quickly explained to her.

"It was a wood-type mage who used healing magic to assist you during childbirth. Don't worry, he didn't see anything."

Grandma Afu was kneeling at the foot of the bed, helping her give birth. Grandma Afu was someone Ivy knew, and seeing Maggie in the room made her feel much more at ease.

"Feeling better? Can you exert more force now?"

Afu asked Ivy, and Ivy nodded.

"Okay, then follow my rhythm and push. Let's deliver the baby in one go. It won't be good if we drag it out any longer. Lie down first."

Ivy obediently lay down and tried her best to do as Grandma Afu had instructed.

Lei didn't dare to end the healing spell easily, fearing that something else might happen, so he persisted.

Lei felt that time was passing very slowly. He tried to ignore the sounds in the room and thought about how much longer it would take to collect enough wood and when to start harvesting the crops from the ground.

The people inside were racing against time, while those outside were waiting anxiously.

Perhaps it was five minutes, perhaps half an hour, or perhaps only a dozen minutes. The baby's faint cries finally broke the silence in everyone's hearts.

"She gave birth! She's finally given birth!"

Mark's father beamed with joy, and Mark's expression relaxed slightly.

"How is it going? Do you need me to continue?"

Lai asked Grandma Afu.

"Wait a minute, if you can, hang in there a little longer. She has a slight tear; magic can at least make her feel a little better afterward."

"good."

The healing spell worked very well; it at least controlled Ivy's bleeding.

Ordinary people have a blind worship of magic. Lai felt that Granny Afu's sending of the magician was largely to act as a mascot, giving the new mother confidence.

He didn't think he had that much ability, that he could solve all the pain of childbirth with a single magic spell.

After tying the baby's umbilical cord with a thread, Grandma Afu gave her a quick bath and handed her over to Maggie.

Upon discovering the baby's gender, Maggie was disappointed, and her face clearly showed her unhappiness.

"Child, I want to see the child."

Ivy was somewhat weak.

"Don't worry, the baby is still taking a bath. We'll bring the placenta out first and then show it to you. The baby is very healthy."

Grandma Afu speaks very gently, with a reassuring quality.

Ivy's mood improved, and she continued her efforts.

Fortunately, this time it didn't last long, and the delivery was over soon, and Lei also finished this long healing spell.

If it weren't for his improved magic level, Lai felt he wouldn't have been able to last even fifteen minutes.

Having completed his task, Lai immediately groped his way out of the room. As soon as he took off his handkerchief, he saw Linda and Lai sitting in the living room.

"How did you get here by yourself?"

Ray understood the hidden meaning in Linda's words and stood obediently behind her.

At that moment, Maggie pushed open the door and came out carrying a small package.

"Mark, come and take a look."

Maggie's tone was very flat.

Mark rushed over immediately, while Anna sat in a chair, craning her neck curiously. Mark's younger brother pretended not to care, playing with the small wooden stick in his hand, but both his ears were perked up.

Mark carefully took the swaddled baby from his mother's arms.

"She, she..."

Mark pondered for a while but couldn't come up with a clear answer.

"It's a daughter."

"Maggie said."

Mark looked at the child in his arms, grinning foolishly, and before he knew it, his eyes were filled with tears.

"Wow……"

The child burst into tears, and Mark immediately became flustered.

"Maybe she's hungry, I'll carry her back."

"well."

Mark reluctantly handed the child back to Maggie, watching her carry the child back into the house. When he turned around again, the three of them were no longer in the living room.

"Did Ray and Aunt Linda go back?"

"Yes, I just said hello and left."

Anna replied.

Lai and Linda walked home side by side. After a while, Linda finally spoke up.

“Lei, I’m not against you saving people. We have the ability, and it’s only right that we help those in need. But if there’s another emergency like this, it’s better to bring someone you know along.”

"good."

Ray humbly accepted Linda's advice, knowing that Linda meant well.

“Maggie, sigh...the adults in that family aren't easy to get along with. If something goes wrong today, you'll be the only outsider there, and it won't be easy for you to get away with it. We mean well, but we can't be completely careless, do you understand what I mean?”

“I understand, I know,”

"Hmm. But, Ray, you saved Mark's wife and her child today. That's really impressive. You've grown into a reliable adult."

Linda reached out and touched the top of Ray's head, then gave him a hug.

Lamb must be jealous.

Linda hadn't hugged him like this in a long time.

"Brother, you're amazing!"

Lamb hugged Ray when he wasn't looking, leaving Ray speechless.

"Alright, let's hurry home. Your brother must be very tired."

"Um."

Neil waited at home until dark before Ray finally returned.

He wanted to go along, but Lamb stopped him, saying that babies shouldn't be seen when women are giving birth. Neil was furious when he heard this.

"Brother, has Mark's wife given birth yet?"

"Um."

"Brother is so amazing!"

Seeing that Neil was about to hug her, Ray quickly stopped him.

"It's not that I'm amazing, it's that Ivy, who gave birth, is amazing. She gave birth to the child herself."

"They're both amazing! Are they a boy or a girl?"

"It looks like a girl."

"Oh, Aunt Maggie will definitely not be happy."

"Hmm? I don't know."

"Brother, you look very tired."

"A little."

"Then you should go to sleep."

"good."

As soon as I relaxed, a wave of fatigue washed over me—the familiar feeling of magic overdraft.

"Neil, I'm going to sleep. Close all the doors and windows in a bit."

"Okay! Brother, you should go to sleep."

Neil was answered by Lamb's even breathing.

Inside the dark box, the egg, which had not received any magical nourishment, stirred. The little undead, also in the box, huddled inside the plaster statue it was possessing, trembling with fear.

It sensed a terrifying aura emanating from the egg, as if something was awakening.
