Chapter 32 Magic Notebook: A blue package, a magic notebook, a new skill...

As soon as Vivian arrived at Lai's house, she saw a clean and tidy front yard and a brand-new shed on the side. The little mule was tied up inside and kept chewing on grass.

The windows of the small building were all open for ventilation. A pot of lily of the valley was placed on the windowsill of the window facing the front yard, with clusters of small flowers hanging on it like little lanterns.

"Ray! Neil!"

When Lai heard the noise, he went outside and saw a strange woman standing at the door.

“Brother, it looks like Cousin Vivian.”

Neil tugged at Ray's sleeve, somewhat uncertain.

Upon hearing Neil's words, Ray also felt that the face looked somewhat familiar. His subconscious told him that this person was someone he knew very well.

"Vivian?"

"It's me."

Vivian's smile remained unchanged despite seeing Lai's unfamiliar expression.

Ray was naturally a bit introverted, and he was quite shy when he met her at school. Moreover, Lamb mentioned that he had injured his head and was experiencing some inexplicable aftereffects…

"Cousin, come in and have a cup of hot tea."

"No, Lai, it's getting late, I need to go back early. There will be time later. I came to deliver something to you."

Vivian handed him a blue package.

"These are your things from school. One of your classmates packed them for you, and the little packages inside were also a gift from him. The gifts I bought for you and Neil are also in there."

Vivian winked at Neil.

"Thank you, cousin."

Lei thanked him politely.

"Thank you, sister!"

Neil also thanked Vivian very politely.

"Lay, I'm going back now. Feel free to contact me anytime if you have any questions. I'll be here for you."

Vivian turned and left, raising her hand and waving with her back to Ray and Neil.

"No need to see me off, it's getting dark, go home now."

"Goodbye, Cousin Vivian!"

Neil called out to her retreating figure.

"Go inside quickly."

The two watched Vivian's figure disappear around the corner before returning to the house.

The light was dim, so Lai lit a candle and opened the package by the flickering candlelight.

Inside was a dark blue crossbody bag, made of sturdy fabric, and clearly sized for Neil.

At this time, all dyes were natural, with a limited range of colors and they did not last long. This deep blue was one of the hardest to find.

Neil happily carried it on his back.

"Is it pretty?"

Neil asked Rye.

"nice."

Inside was a brand new water bladder, decorated with beautiful, simple yet elegant designs. It could hold a lot of water, making it perfect for travel. This was a small gift Vivian gave to Ray.

Next came a small package, which Lai put aside for the time being, saving it for last.

There were also some odds and ends.

A few charcoal pencils, a half-used notebook, a small knife, a spoon, and a fork.

At the very bottom was a somewhat old, dark-colored garment.

Ray unfolded his clothes, and a notebook fell to the ground. Neil picked it up for Ray and put it on the table.

"Brother, is this a magic robe?"

"Yes."

This is a uniform magic robe worn by the church, with wood element totems embroidered in green silk thread on the chest.

These are the clothes that Ray used to wear when he was studying at magic school.

Lai folded the magic robe and put it in his bag, then picked up the notebook.

The notebook's cover was made of thick kraft paper, with no writing on it. The color was very dark, indicating that it had been used for a long time, and the corners of the notebook had been worn into rounded shapes.

Turning to the first page of the notebook, a familiar name—Ray Victor—was written right in the center.

Ray continued flipping through the pages, which were filled with dense writing and various vivid diagrams.

He slowly stopped flipping through the middle of the notebook, his pupils dilating with emotion.

The title page clearly read "Commonly Used Magic Skills".

If Ray continues down that page, he can see how to cast some basic magic skills and incantations.

Dead trees come back to life, growth accelerates, basic healing techniques...

Although it was only a beginner's introduction to magic, it was just right for Ray!

He counted them and found that there were more than a dozen skills, most of which were support skills, with only one or two attack skills.

These skills are useless in online games, but in real life, Lai hopes that the more the better.

There was nothing useful after that. Lei carefully put the notebook away.

"Brother, what's inside? Why are you so excited?"

Neil asked.

"Magic skills".

"ah?"

Neil's mouth gaped open, surprised and incredulous.

Is my brother joking?

Neil knew that magical skills were generally inaccessible to ordinary people like them.

Looking back at the entire history of magic on the continent, the number of humans with magical talent is only about one percent.

Because of the large number of people, there are quite a few who have awakened their magic, but they still need to systematically learn how to use magic.

You could go to a free magic school run by the church, become an apprentice to a mage, or join a magic guild to learn magic.

If you are unfortunate enough not to have received any guidance, then even if you are very talented, you may very well live out your life like an ordinary person.

Resources like magic books circulate only internally.

There are some basic magic books available on the market, but their prices are unimaginable for an ordinary family like Lai's.

Those high-level spellbooks are even more priceless.

Vivian was partly responsible for the successful retrieval of Ray's magic notebook.

"Brother, are these your things from school?"

"Yes."

"So you went to a school that teaches magic?"

Ray conjured a small ball of light in his hand and showed it to him.

Neil stared at it with bright eyes, touched it with his finger, but felt nothing.

"That's amazing!"

Ray clenched his fist, and the ball of light disappeared. Neil exclaimed in surprise again.

"Brother is so amazing!"

Ray shook his head.

"She's not that impressive. Cousin Vivian is the real deal."

"My cousin is amazing too, you're all amazing!"

Ray smiled and helped Neil smooth down his upturned tuft of hair. Then he opened the last remaining small package.

The small package was made of delicate, smooth fabric, tied in a tight knot. Lei struggled to untie it, revealing another layer of sturdy gauze inside. Peeling back the gauze revealed what was wrapped inside.

A letter, a pen, a bottle of ink, and a book.

Ray picked up the book and flipped through a few pages before realizing that it wasn't a book at all, but a notebook with a cowhide cover filled with densely packed text.

Ray carefully opened the wax-sealed letter—

Lei:

Hearing the news of your withdrawal from school filled me with burning anger. I can't imagine why someone as passionate about learning as you would leave.

Later, when I learned of the tragic news about your family from others, I felt extremely regretful and saddened, and I also regretted my anger at the time.

I know that if I give you gold coins, you will never talk to me again, and I will lose a true friend.

So I've copied some content from a wood-based magic book for you, hoping you'll find it useful in the future...

...

Your friend, Arthur.

This letter was three long pages long.

It includes various events that happen at school after Rye drops out, Arthur's longing for his friends, and his lamentation about the injustice of fate.

It's clear that Arthur is a very good friend of "Ray".

Throughout the reading of the letter, Ray viewed it from the perspective of a stranger.

But looking at Arthur's letter, a sense of regret and reluctance welled up deep in Ray's heart, as if he had really experienced what Arthur was talking about.

"Brother, don't be sad, I will always be with you."

Neil got off the chair and gave Ray a small hug.

Neil's arms were short, but warm.

"I'm not sad, I'm just recalling some things."

Lei explained.

"Just wash up quickly and go back to sleep; it's already completely dark."

"Okay, brother."

After washing up, Neil took his small backpack and went back upstairs.

Ray reopened the notebook he had been using as a book.

The handwriting was somewhat ugly, but it was written neatly with great effort, and the lines of text occasionally tilted to the upper right.

Besides some basic theories, there are also some more profound magic concepts that Ray doesn't understand yet.

After packing everything back into the blue package, I washed up and took it back to my room.

Back inside, Lai opened the locked wooden chest and placed the leather notebook and steel knife together. After thinking for a moment, he also put the old mage's robe inside.

These are all precious items, but he doesn't need them for the time being, so they need to be carefully preserved together.

Lai put the rest of the items in another unlocked box for easy access.

Then, by candlelight, Ray sat down at the wooden table and began to read his own notebook.

The first skill is "Rejuvenation of Dead Trees".

The following text describes its skill characteristics: it can revitalize plants within a unit. The unit is carefully marked with its length and width as one meter.

The effect of the skill depends on the caster's level. A high-level caster can make a tree sprout new buds, while a low-level caster can at most make a shriveled seed plump up.

However, regardless of the level, it only has an effect of one unit. Only the higher-level "Rejuvenation" can expand the range and effect.

Lei took a quick look and, perhaps due to bodily memory, learned how to unleash the skill in just over an hour.

But the incantation was too difficult to pronounce, and he could only succeed two or three times out of ten. Even so, he was already very satisfied.

So, while studying the notes and practicing casting spells, most of the night passed.

Studying late into the night brought back memories of the time before his university exams.

The next day at dawn, Lai got up to cook and feed the various livestock in the house; you couldn't tell at all that he had stayed up very late.

After breakfast, Lai temporarily tied the mule to another location and used a broom and shovel to clean up the manure on the ground. After sweeping, he washed the ground with clean water and waited until it was completely dry before tying the mule back into the shed.

The ground only needs to be washed with clean water every few days. There is dry grass on the ground to keep the shed dry.

After the dew in the vegetable garden dried, Lai cut down the above-ground parts of the potatoes and sweet potatoes, as well as the potato and sweet potato vines.

They've withered; there's no need to keep them any longer.

The harvested trash is piled on a wheelbarrow, and once it's full, Lai pushes it all outside.

He has a lot of work to do today, and he needs to hurry up and finish it all.
