Chapter 4 Roasted Chicken, Gift Giving in Lawson Town, Market Day in Lawson Town...
Lei tried again and again to condense a ball of light until he could no longer condense one, and he fell into a coma due to excessive mental energy consumption.
A bamboo basket and a small hoe were placed in the yard, with two dead wild birds hanging on the basket. The house was quiet.
The last time his brother was injured, it was in a similar situation. Neil's pupils contracted sharply, and he hurriedly dropped his bag and ran into the room.
Lai was relieved to see Lei lying asleep in bed.
My brother must have gone hunting today.
Neil sighed like a little adult and dealt with everything except the prey.
Lei picked a lot of mushrooms this time. Neil kept some to clean, and laid the rest out on a thin wooden board to dry.
As dinner time approached, Ray was still asleep. Neil, having finished his schoolwork and with nothing to do, went out to collect a bundle of firewood, where he met some familiar friends and chatted for a while.
When Neil's stomach started growling for the second time, Rae finally woke up.
When he woke up, his mental energy had mostly recovered. Neil was pitifully staying by his side, and his stomach was rumbling.
Are you hungry?
Neil nodded, blushing slightly.
"How about we have roast chicken today?"
Roast chicken? What's that?
Anyway, everything my brother makes tastes delicious!
"good!"
A large pot of water had already boiled on the fireplace; it was obvious that Neil had boiled it while he was unconscious.
Lai poured boiling water over the smaller wildebeest outside to remove its feathers.
The bird feathers smelled too strong, and the room was too small, so it would fill the whole room with the smell of bird feathers. He threw the internal organs to the big yellow dog, as Lai said he didn't want to deal with them.
As for the larger red rockbird, Ray had Neil deliver it to Hagrid's house.
Hagrid's house is located near the center of the village and is a larger two-story building.
They had four children in total, three boys and one girl.
The first two children are already married and each has one child.
In the village, families generally do not separate, and people have long lifespans, so almost every family that has lived here for a long time has a large household.
Neil walked into Hagrid's house. Linda was preparing dinner for the whole family, while Hagrid sat outside in the shade, weaving baskets.
Is Aunt Linda home?
Upon hearing Neil's voice, Kelly rolled her eyes; she was Brian's wife.
"He came over for dinner again, just to freeload."
Kelly deliberately whispered in front of Linda.
Hagrid and his wife always used their belongings to help the two brothers, which made her very unhappy.
The second son's wife, Farah, quietly helped Linda without saying a word.
Linda smacked the edge of the pan twice with the spatula and glared at her. Kelly immediately turned into a quail.
Linda handed the spatula to Farah and hurriedly wiped her hands clean with her apron before going out to greet her. She saw Neil standing outside the low wall, holding a large, brightly colored bird in his hand.
"My brother hunted a wild red rockbird today and asked me to bring it to my uncle and aunt to eat."
Neil shoved the red wildebeest into Linda's hand, and fearing she would refuse, he ran away quickly before Linda could say anything.
"What's wrong?"
Hagrid asked upon hearing the voice.
Linda held up the red wildbird by its feet and showed it to Hagrid.
“Rai got it, have Neil bring it to us.”
"The two children are so kind; please take it inside."
"Why."
Linda took the red rockbird to the kitchen, then called her granddaughter over and deliberately packed three loaves of bread in front of her two daughters-in-law, asking her to give them to Ray and the others.
Hagrid also asked his granddaughter to pass on a message to Rae, asking if he wanted to take a ride to the market the next day.
Neil ran home breathlessly, eager to get back and help Ray. As soon as he entered, he saw the red wildebeest already cleaned and laid out on the table.
Their two-story house has a small living room at the entrance, with a stone fireplace against the wall. This is where they entertain guests and cook.
There were two rooms on the first floor, one for living and the other for storing miscellaneous items. There were also two rooms on the second floor. In addition, they had a small cellar.
"elder brother?"
"Here."
Ray popped his head out of the cellar and threw a few potatoes upwards, which Neil gathered into a bowl.
The cellar contained only half a wooden crate of potatoes and a dozen or so sweet potatoes, most of which had already sprouted. Lai picked out a few that still looked edible and threw them out separately.
He carried the rest out of the cellar along with the wooden crates; he was going to plant them all in the ground.
"Uncle Lei!"
I could hear the little girl's clear voice from a great distance.
Lai grabbed the edge of the cellar with his hands, and with a push of his arms, he leaped out of the cellar, which was more than a meter high.
Neil put down the knife he was using to peel potatoes.
"It's Luna's little niece!"
As soon as Neil finished speaking, the little girl walked briskly into the living room.
"Hello, Uncle Lei, Uncle Neil!" the little girl greeted politely. "Grandma asked me to deliver bread."
Her chubby face and big, light brown eyes made her instantly lovable.
"Uncle Lei, Grandpa asked me to ask you if you want to go to the market together tomorrow."
Uncle Lei has fair skin and is good-looking; she likes him very much.
He didn't have much food at home, and he needed to find out about the situation in town, so he definitely needed to go to the market.
Ray readily agreed, but the little girl's fixed gaze made him a little strange.
Without thinking too much, he broke off a leaf, wrapped some berries in it, and handed it to Luna.
The little girl's eyes shone even brighter.
Uncle Ray used to always stay indoors and didn't like to talk to anyone. Now, Uncle Ray has a scar on his forehead, and although he looks fierce, he'll give her sweet fruit to eat!
Neil's little radar immediately activated, and he looked at Luna with some vigilance.
He felt like someone was trying to take his brother away from him!
He put the bread down and subtly urged Luna to go home for dinner.
The fragrant roast chicken was served two hours later, and the sun hadn't even set yet.
The two brothers left the door open and ate their rather sumptuous dinner by the light.
The selection of seasonings here is limited, and sugar is even more of a rarity. Despite this, Lai did his best to make the roast chicken delicious.
He used crushed berries instead of honey, lightly coated the red rockbirds with it before they came out of the oven, and placed diced potatoes next to them before roasting them together.
Meanwhile, they made a salad with bird eggs and fresh vegetables, and with Linda's bread, the two of them enjoyed the meal very much.
As dawn broke, Ray ate a little something and then carried the hare to Hagrid's house.
Hagrid's eldest son, Brian, had already harnessed the oxcart, which was piled with several tanned hides and some wild game.
Two women from the same village were also at Hagrid's house, preparing to hitch a ride to town. They set off immediately after Ray arrived.
They needed to go around two low hills to reach the town.
The mountain road was rugged, and the oxcart swayed and bumped along the way.
Brian drove the oxcart, while two women chatted about everyday matters. A young man named Ray couldn't join in the conversation and could only sit quietly to the side.
Hagrid noticed his discomfort and took the initiative to chat with him.
"I brought some bread made by your aunt, would you like some?"
Hagrid said with a smile, taking out some bread from the basket and handing it to Ray, who quickly declined Hagrid's offer.
Hagrid didn't mind being rejected and put the bread back in the basket.
"Uncle Hagrid, do you know where I can sell it?"
Ray removed the leaves from the basket to show Hagrid the long-toothed beast inside, and the two women craned their necks to look inside as well.
"Wow, what a huge long-toothed beast!"
The woman exclaimed in surprise.
"Did you call it yesterday?"
Hagrid asked, and Ray nodded.
He picked up the rabbit to adjust its weight.
"They are indeed quite plump. Wild game is worth some money in town. I know someone who can offer fair prices. I'll take you there later."
The two talked about other things along the way, and time passed quickly. They finally arrived in Rosen town when the sun was high in the sky.
Rosen Town is the only town within a radius of several hundred miles, and most of the trade from the dozen or so nearby villages is concentrated here.
The town has a permanent population of just over 5,000, which is far too small compared to towns in modern society that often have tens of thousands of residents.
Lai and his companions each paid a toll of ten copper coins to the city's garrison knight before being allowed into the city.
The oxcart couldn't enter the inner city, so after entering the city, Hagrid left it at the dock and spent some copper coins.
We agreed to meet at around 2:30 pm, when the sun was at its hottest, and then everyone went their separate ways.
Brian carried the hides, and Ray helped carry some mountain goods. The two followed Hagrid through the streets and alleys.
At first, the streets were lined with similar two-story buildings, and the road surface was paved with uneven stones. Gradually, the road surface became a complete stone slab road, and the streets were lined with neat three-story buildings, with many neatly dressed pedestrians coming and going.
Hagrid led the two through a maze of turns and stopped at the back door of a small building.
He knocked on the door, and after a short while someone warmly welcomed them inside.
Out of respect for Hai Ge, the shopkeeper of Laiyi's Long-Toothed Rabbit gave him four silver coins.
One silver coin was equal to one hundred copper coins, and one hundred silver coins could be exchanged for one gold coin. Four silver coins were equivalent to four hundred yuan in modern terms, which was a small amount of income.
Ray said goodbye to Hagrid and left; he had other important things to do.
Although the residents of Rosen Town were not very fat, they all had rosy complexions and their clothes had few patches, indicating that their quality of life was much better than that of the villagers.
Rye casually asked around and found out Blake's address and the location of the market.
He went to Blake first, wanting to ask him some questions.
After all, he's a big customer who's spent several gold coins, so I'm sure he'll have plenty to say.
