Chapter 43 The Sacrifice (Part 2) Eating roasted meat, Neil's sense of smell...
The meat wasn't fully cooked yet, and everyone was saving their stomachs for the rare barbecue feast.
Ray searched around but couldn't find Neil. Later, he asked Lamb and found out that Neil had gone to play with his friends.
The children ran around in the crowd, and there was no need to worry about them getting lost even though there were people all around.
Ray turned his gaze away and stood to one side with Linda and Lamb.
Linda was worried that Ray might not get to eat anything good because he was too shy, so she quickly handed him some delicious fruit.
Fruit doesn't weigh you down, and it's sweet too. Lai accepted Linda's kind offer.
He chatted casually with Lamb. After a while, Ray noticed that there were many young girls coming and going around them. He would steal a few glances from time to time, and when he was caught, he and his female companion would cover their mouths and giggle.
What happened?
Lai looked around and saw young girls and boys exchanging purses and ribbons. After exchanging them, the two of them walked shyly to a less crowded place to chat.
Huh? Could this be an exchange of love tokens...?
He ripped the ribbon off his left arm and stuffed it into his pocket.
"Why aren't you wearing it anymore?"
Linda asked, and her next sentence confirmed Ray's guess.
"Don't you have a girl you like?"
“I’m still young, no rush. Neil might not be able to adjust to having a stranger in the house either.”
Lei immediately rejected it.
He had no intention of starting a family. Some people just prefer to live their lives quietly, and Ray is one of them.
He enjoys reading and keeping records, he loves rural life, and he also enjoys wandering around.
There are so many things in the world that interest him, so many magnificent mountains and rivers; his steps will not stop for anyone. Life is only a few decades long, and he only wants to live for himself.
"Wouldn't it be better to have a virtuous wife to help you take care of Neil?"
"I still prefer to take care of Neil by myself for now."
Linda sighed.
"You and Vivian are just like each other."
Vivian was suddenly called out, and it was about getting married, so she quickly moved away from Linda's attack range.
It's clear that Linda has been talking about her marriage a lot.
Although Lamb is an adult, he's sometimes more immature than a child, and he's still clueless when it comes to relationships. He's just lucky if he doesn't cause Linda any trouble; marriage is still a long way off.
Her face was full of helplessness.
As soon as Lai took off his ribbon, there were indeed far fewer girls passing by. He breathed a sigh of relief and left with Lamb under some pretext.
"Brother, where shall we go for fun?"
"I'm not going to play, I'm just going to look around."
"oh."
The warehouse next to the threshing ground was also brightly lit, with elders from various villages and other influential older generations sitting inside.
Ray saw Simon and his apprentices by the warehouse. The apprentices were talking excitedly, and Simon would occasionally chime in.
After selling the Warcraft, Barnett immediately settled the payment and warmly invited them to the bonfire party that evening.
Simon looked up and saw Rye, smiled and nodded to greet him, and Rye nodded in return.
As the drumbeats rang out rhythmically, young men and women danced around the campfire to the music.
Soon, more people joined in, and the threshing ground became even more lively.
Lei stood on the periphery watching this joyful scene, his heart filled with mixed emotions.
Who could have imagined that this once vibrant Earth would one day be struck by a zombie virus? Thousands of years of glory vanished in an instant. How insignificant humanity is in the face of such a catastrophe!
As the music came to an end, the meat began to sizzle and release its oil, finally cooked through.
The roasted meat was taken off the grill and immediately replaced with a new one to continue roasting, with everyone lining up to get their meat.
Lai received a large piece of lamb, which was simply roasted with salt without any chili powder or other seasonings.
Even so, the meat tasted incredibly delicious. The villagers responsible for grilling the meat cooked it to a perfect crispy exterior and tender interior, demonstrating exceptional skill.
Neil returned to Ray's side, his pockets bulging, clearly indicating he had received a lot of snacks.
After finishing the barbecue, the threshing ground took a short break.
Lamb stepped forward and led Ray and Neil to the largest campfire in the center.
"Come quick, Vivian is about to cast a spell!"
Vivian raised her right hand, opened her palm, and recited a long incantation.
Fire elementals rapidly gathered around her, the spell ended, and a fire dragon flew out of the campfire. The dragon circled the threshing ground twice before finally soaring high into the air and exploding into large bursts of sparks.
Everyone looked up at the night sky and exclaimed in amazement.
Neil seemed to smell something and twitched his nose.
Vivian then cast two more flashy little spells to entertain everyone.
After the meat was grilled, a new round of eating began, and the ritual continued until late at night.
Neil was so sleepy he was swaying. After saying goodbye to Rye and Hagrid, they carried Neil home.
The full moon shone brightly, making the cobblestone path beneath our feet seem less difficult to walk on. Neil, leaning on Ray's back, mumbled sleepily.
"Brother, I'm so happy today! I wish Mom and Dad were here too."
“Parker brought me and Helen some delicious honey candy. He said he might not be back for next year’s harvest festival.”
"Uncle Buz's son is so wicked, he actually tried to steal Helen's flesh to eat."
The sound of Ray's footsteps on the cobblestone path and Neil's voice broke the silence of the night, creating a stark contrast between the deserted road and the bustling crowd in the threshing ground.
"Brother, are you listening?"
"I'm listening."
"Brother, I have a secret to tell you."
Lei chuckled. "What a child, so young, already has secrets."
"What's wrong?"
“My cousin Vivian also has a different scent; it’s the scent of flames.”
"Does fire have a smell?"
"Yes, it's very hot and warm. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I know that's it."
Ray recalled what Neil had said earlier; it seemed he was particularly sensitive to the scent of magic.
"Neil, do you know magic too?"
"No, I don't even know how to make a ball of light."
Have you ever had your magic tested before?
"I don't know, I don't remember."
The children who took the magic tests were all very young, so it's normal that they don't remember. To find out what was going on with Neil, Ray decided to take him to the Mage's Association when he had some free time.
It's hard to say whether this talent is a blessing or a curse for Neil.
Back home, Neil washed his feet and immediately climbed into bed to sleep.
Although we didn't stay up very late, it was still quite exhausting for the kids.
After washing up, Lai lay down on the bed, but he didn't sleep. He was very concerned about what had happened during the sacrificial ceremony and the bonfire party that day.
Where did all that light go?
Where did that staff come from, and what is its purpose?
Why can ordinary people use a staff to perform skills?
What about Neil's sense of smell?
Lei thought and thought but couldn't come up with a solution.
His eyelids slowly drooped, and he finally fell asleep.
