Chapter 171 Who is he? He treats the unconscious man and gives him cold noodles.
Ray led the man into the house. The man was thin and had very little flesh on his body, so Ray carried him on his back without any effort.
Tata was groggily awakened by the pungent smell wafting towards him. He stared blankly at the two people standing in the doorway, not yet realizing what had happened.
"It stinks! How did they bring someone back? He looks like he's about to die!"
Tata almost covered her nose with her paws.
"Give me a hand and open the bedroom door."
"Oh, okay."
Tata pushed open the bedroom door, grabbed a blanket, and spread it on the bed.
"Ray, he's so dirty, don't get the bed dirty."
"Thank you, Tata."
"You're welcome."
Tata raised her fluffy little head and lightly jumped off the bed.
Ray stepped forward and gently laid the man down, making him lie flat on the bed. Even while unconscious, the man's brow was furrowed, and he looked to be in pain.
"Ray, Ray." Tata hooked Ray's trouser leg with her front paws.
"What's wrong, Tata?"
"Get away from him quickly, he stinks."
“He’s badly injured. The smell comes from the infected and festering wounds. Don’t be afraid, Tata. I’ll clean him up in a bit. Your sense of smell is better than mine, so stay away from him.”
As he spoke, Lei added warm water to the basin and used an old towel to give him a quick wash. The towel got dirty in no time, but at least the person's features were finally visible.
This person has a very handsome bone structure, with a high nose bridge and long eyelashes, but large freckles on his cheeks and forehead ruin the beauty of his face, making him look quite ordinary.
Only the exposed skin of his was dirty, while the parts that were not exposed were clean. This dirt was probably a disguise to avoid attracting attention.
The patient was lying down and couldn't easily take off his clothes, and some of his wounds were stuck to his clothing, so Ray found some scissors and simply cut the clothes open. The clothes he was wearing smelled sour and were tattered, so there was no need to mend them.
Once the clothes were removed, the person's wounds were immediately exposed.
He had many whip marks on his chest, each one swollen and bloody, which looked quite frightening.
The most serious wound was on his right lower back, a knife mark more than ten centimeters long, stuck tightly to his clothes. After Ray tore it off, it bled some more. The wound was severely inflamed, oozing pus and rotting.
His back, arms, and thighs had claw marks, abrasions, and many bruises.
Ray couldn't figure out who this young man had offended to end up like this.
He quickly and efficiently washed the young man, changing the water three or four times until the grime was finally removed. He also applied medicine to some of the less serious wounds. However, the wound on his lower back was too severe, and Ray dared not move it. In this situation, he had to trouble Dr. Blake to come over.
The young man remained unconscious throughout the entire process, except for uncontrollable facial spasms caused by the pain during the application of medication.
Ray noticed that his face was unusually flushed, and when he touched his forehead, it was indeed very hot. He quickly applied the medicine and changed him into his own clean clothes. His hair was a bit long and difficult to clean, so he had to leave it for the time being.
A cold can cause a fever, and so can a wound infection; Ray couldn't figure out what was wrong with him. If he were injured himself, he could use various medications without much thought, but he had to be careful when giving medicine to strangers. He didn't dare to give him any medicine lightly, lest it backfire.
The young man's injuries were really too severe; the wound on his lower back needed to be cleaned. After a moment's consideration, Ray decided to immediately set off for town to fetch Dr. Blake.
After cleaning up the sewage, Ray threw the tattered clothes directly into the fireplace and burned them.
"Tata, watch the house and don't let strangers in. If anyone in the house wakes up, don't speak. Communicate with Ryan in your mind. If that person attacks you, beg Ryan not to use magic or attack him. Just hide. Ryan won't abandon you."
"Mmm!" Tata nodded obediently.
"Ray, where are you going?"
"Go to town and fetch a doctor."
"The one that treats legs?"
"Yes."
"Ray, is he a bad guy?"
Tata and Lai both turned their gazes to the young man on the bed.
"I don't know, but he knows Guge, so maybe he's not a bad person. You have to be extra careful while I'm gone, okay?"
"The funds have arrived."
"Know."
"Capital".
"......"
"Okay, I'm going now."
"Goodbye, Ray, come back soon!"
Tata sat by the door to see Lai off, then turned around and jumped onto the bed in the bedroom.
The young man had changed into clean clothes, but his complexion was extremely abnormal, his forehead was covered in fine sweat, and his expression was ferocious, as if he were having a nightmare. Tata retracted her nails and slapped him across the face; the young man quickly returned to normal.
"Who is he?" Ryan had somehow appeared behind Tata's head, startling him.
"The human that Lei picked up," Tata replied guiltily, wondering if Ryan had noticed his little actions.
"He really likes to bring things back."
Ryan looked at Tata, and Tata felt that He seemed to be implying something.
"Weren't you also picked up by Lai?" Tata muttered softly, not daring to retort to Ryan's face.
"He's not human."
"Not human?" The little monster's ears perked up immediately.
"Then what is it? Is it a magical beast? Is it a magical beast?"
Ignoring the little monster that had already piqued his interest, Ryan leisurely floated away, a barely perceptible smile playing on his lips, while behind him the little monster howled in agony.
"Oh! What is he?!"
Ray came and went quickly, returning with Dr. Blake in just over an hour.
After examining the young man, Blake determined that the fever was caused by a wound infection and began to clean the wound. Because Ray's description of the injury was accurate, and Blake had brought a full range of tools and medications, the minor surgery could be performed directly on the bed.
In this medical environment, Ray wasn't sure if it was really okay, but he didn't question Blake's authority and prepared boiling water and clean gauze as instructed.
Blake first fed the young man a small bowl of brown liquid, then positioned him on his side, lifted his clothes, and placed a cloth under his waist.
"Are you going to cut right away like this? Should I step aside?"
"We've already given him pain-relieving medication, so he won't wake up halfway through. If you want to stay here, that's fine too."
Blake grinned wickedly, infusing magic into the knife and beginning to clean the rotten flesh from the young man's wound. Bright red blood instantly flowed out, but thankfully, Ray wasn't afraid of blood. Having seen too many severed limbs before, cutting flesh and cleaning wounds were now minor matters, and Ray didn't feel uncomfortable at the scene.
The minor surgery took nearly half an hour. Blake used a transparent, fine thread to perform the final sutures. After cleaning and applying medicine, a wound more than ten centimeters long was left, resembling a centipede. However, this was much better than when it was oozing pus.
"It's a pity for such delicate skin. I'll try my best to make it look nice, but this wound will definitely leave a scar."
Blake threw the scraped-off rotten flesh, along with the gauze used in the process, directly into the burning fireplace.
“His injuries are severe, and the claw marks on his legs are poisonous; I can only clean part of them. With the wounds festering and the poisoning, he will be unconscious for a while. I'll leave you some medicine; you need to change his dressings every day. As for the antidote, I can only prepare it when I get back; come to town tomorrow to pick it up. Give him two spoonfuls of this medicine this afternoon; it should help relieve his fever.”
"good."
After Blake finished explaining everything in detail, he took out several bottles of medicine.
"Just bring the medical expenses and medicine fees with you when you pick up the medicine tomorrow. I won't ask any more questions about where you rescued this person. Be careful in everything you do, and don't get involved in trouble that you shouldn't get involved in."
Lei nodded.
"clear."
"I'm leaving now, don't bother seeing me out."
Ray saw Blake to the door and watched him ride away before returning inside. Tata poked her little head out from the bottom of the stairs.
"He's gone?"
"Um."
Tata sniffed.
"I smell blood. Is he dead?"
"No, it's just a little blood."
"Oh. Then why hasn't he woken up yet?" Tata looked at the young man lying on the bed with curiosity.
"He's been poisoned and won't wake up for a while."
"Well, he's really unlucky."
Lei smiled, scooped Tata up, and casually patted his little belly.
"You scoundrel!"
"Pfft... Who taught you that word?"
"Beasts know! Don't touch my belly!"
"Okay, okay, okay." Lei surrendered.
"And you're not allowed to touch my butt!"
"Uh-huh."
The young man did develop a fever that night, and Lei gave him medicine and water, taking care of him all night until his condition stabilized.
After that, the young man remained unconscious for a week. Lai changed his dressings and fed him on time, and his wounds gradually healed, making him look less gruesome.
During this time, Lai asked Gug if he knew the unconscious person, but Gug said he had never seen him. However, when the young man was awake, he clearly stated that he knew Gug. This matter could only be discussed with him after he regained consciousness.
Although there was an extra person in the family, he remained unconscious. Apart from needing to be fed medication and cared for daily, Ray and Neil's lives did not change much.
However, the weather is getting hotter every day, and if the young man remains unconscious, he will eventually develop bedsores. Lei can't keep sharing a small bed with Neil.
On the thirteenth day of the young man's coma, Lai changed his straw mat and cut his long hair shorter, fearing he might get lice. He then temporarily moved to the living room.
Out of humanitarian concern, Ray took meticulous care of him, but this could not stop the young man from growing increasingly thin. He remained unconscious, as if trapped in a beautiful dream from which he could not escape.
Blake said the reason he hadn't woken up was because the toxins had seeped into his brain and couldn't be completely cleared; his body was in a self-repairing state, and perhaps one day he would suddenly wake up. One day—maybe tomorrow, maybe the day after, but it could also be a month later, or a year later.
Ray felt like he was the epitome of a vengeful spirit, and he was determined to make the young man pay for his medical and nursing care once he woke up.
As summer progressed, the vegetable garden welcomed a small harvest.
Pink lettuce and green cherry tomatoes were grown by Ray with his careful care and magical nourishment.
When the pink lettuce first sprouts, it presents a beautiful blend of tender pink and light green, quite different from regular lettuce. As it grows day by day, the tender pink turns into a vibrant rose-red, and it has a slightly sweet taste. Lai brought some to the market, but no one dared to buy it for fear of getting sick from eating it, so in the end, she could only share it with acquaintances.
Cherry tomatoes aren't ripe yet, so I haven't tried them; but I can occasionally find a few half-ripe tomatoes at home. If I find one like that, I just pick it, wash it, and eat it as a snack. It tastes sweet and sour and is very delicious. Neil also likes to pick tomatoes like that to eat.
The fruit trees on the hillside have already borne fruit, and the small, green fruits are particularly pleasing to the eye.
However, things often go to extremes. Too many fruits on the trees are not conducive to nutrient distribution, and they should normally be pruned while they are still small. But there is a comatose patient at home who cannot be left alone, so Ray can only go to the orchard to prune when Neil is resting. The workload is too heavy, but fortunately Lamb can help out.
It was another day off. The small mountain village was hot and sunny in the afternoon. Lai used deep well water to cook noodles, then mixed a large bowl of cold noodles with cucumber shreds, carrot shreds, cherry tomatoes, and crushed peanuts. He ate lunch with Neil and Lamb in the living room. Even Tata got a small bowl of noodles without chili.
It's hot, and I don't have much of an appetite, so a bowl of cold noodles is just right.
There were also two watermelons stored in the well. We cut them open and ate them when it was hottest, and it made us feel refreshed and relaxed.
The three of them sat in the living room eating. In the afternoon, when the sun wasn't so strong, they would go to the vegetable garden to pick vegetables to sell the next day, because some vegetables were too old to sell easily.
Neil added chili oil to his bowl spoonful by spoonful, and also peeled two cloves of garlic and threw them in. Lamb thought it looked spicy.
"Brother, do you want some garlic?"
Ray reached out, and Neil handed him the green garlic.
"There's already garlic in the noodles, why add more?" Lamb asked, puzzled.
“If you don’t eat garlic with your noodles, you’ll lose half the flavor,” Neil replied, looking at Lamb with a “you just don’t understand” kind of look.
"Brother, I want some too!"
Ray handed the remaining garlic to Lamb, who then ate a large mouthful of noodles with the garlic cloves.
"Hehe, I must say, it's actually quite delicious."
"Of course not."
Neil was a little proud of himself for successfully selling his noodle-eating tips.
Lamb was enjoying his meal when he suddenly stopped chewing and looked at Ray in surprise.
"What's wrong?" Neil asked Lamb, who pointed at Ray.
Ray turned around and saw a thin young man standing barefoot and shakily behind him, almost falling over, but luckily he managed to grab the door frame in time.
"Brother, he's awake!"
