Chapter 188 Robber Attack, Wounded, Reversal
After several days of practice, Saiya's driving skills improved significantly, and the carriage traveled very smoothly throughout the journey.
Following the direction Dale pointed out, Saya walked a long way without encountering the gathering team, but the clearly visible tire tracks on the ground clearly told them that they were not far away.
Saiya had no choice but to continue in that direction.
As darkness fell, we had to find a place to stop and rest. While people could endure it, horses might not be able to withstand such a long journey.
After selecting a location, the carriage slowly came to a stop.
The three men worked together, some gathering firewood, others feeding the horses, and still others cooking. No one was idle. They divided the tasks and worked together to finish as quickly as possible.
Only Tata is relatively free. The little cubs don't need to do any work; they just need to take care of themselves.
He had climbed onto the hood of the car without anyone noticing, and lay on it watching Lai and the others work. Tata's eyes reflected the light from the glass lamps in the darkness, as if they were glowing.
The little monster was feeling down because it hadn't had a chance to chat with Lai and the others for the past few days. It wanted Dale to leave quickly so they could head to the elven tribe as soon as possible.
Thanks to her excellent hearing and sense of smell, Tata can see everything around her.
Ray didn't ask him to do anything, but Tata would always obediently do what he could. Like now, helping them be aware of their surroundings.
At dinner time, they roasted a whole long-toothed beast, which Saiah had shot down with his bow and arrow.
Lai uses a lot of seasonings, so even though it's just simple grilled meat, it tastes delicious.
Three adults, plus Tata, who has a big appetite. Each person shared a leg of the beast, and anyone who wanted the rest of the meat could eat it. A whole adult long-toothed beast was enough to fill them all up, with some left over.
Delicious grilled meat and refreshing drinks are the perfect combination, but unfortunately, the timing and location are wrong. Being able to drink cooled boiled water is already a pretty good option. They simply don't have the time to enjoy life right now.
After eating and drinking their fill, the group rested as they had done in the past few days.
Lai sat by the campfire, adding firewood and tending to the flames. Dale chatted with him for a while before going into the tent.
Perhaps tired, Tata didn't keep watch with Lai tonight and went back to her carriage to sleep early.
A breeze picked up at night, bringing cool gusts. The campfire blazed quickly in the wind, and Lai threw in two more pieces of wood as thick as his leg.
Affected by the sound of the wind, the horses paced restlessly.
The howls of wild beasts rose and fell, and out of fear of light and fire, they dared not approach Lai and his companions easily, but the green eyes glowing from behind the bushes still revealed their tracks.
This is only what's on the surface; who knows how many more twin beasts are secretly watching them.
Ray wasn't afraid of these beasts; they could try their luck, and the bone knife in his hand would make them regret it.
The night was peaceful, and the rustling of the bushes and grass was made by mice and other small animals foraging for food.
At first, he would be wary, but now Lei has gotten used to the sound.
It was late at night, almost time for the shift change.
Lai looked tired. With no entertainment, staying up all night was very boring, and he couldn't even concentrate on reading the book in his hand.
Just as he was about to get up and stretch his muscles, something unexpected happened.
A group of people surrounded him, brandishing knives, and immediately attacked Laiyi with deadly intent.
The sudden attack jolted Rayleigh awake, bringing him back to his senses.
They must have encountered the group of robbers that Dale had mentioned earlier. Perhaps it wasn't a sudden encounter, but rather that the bandits had already discovered their whereabouts and were simply waiting for the right moment to launch an attack.
Ray was outnumbered by four men, who surrounded him, none of them concealing their faces.
The other six men approached the tent and the truck bed, assuming there were people inside. They cautiously got closer, intending to kill the person directly with their knives.
"An attack!"
While dodging the attacks of the group, Lei provided warnings and information to Seya and the others.
No sooner had the words left his mouth than a white figure emerged from the wooden window of the carriage. With a "whoosh," an arrow grazed the curtain and struck one of the men in the shoulder.
Lai felt relieved, knowing that Saiya and Tata had woken up.
On the other side, Dale, who was sleeping closer to the campfire, rolled over and hid in the bushes.
Who are you!?
Lei questioned the other party.
"The one who will take your life."
As if they were certain that Lei and the others were already dead, they attacked ruthlessly, unwilling to say a word, only launching attacks until blood was spilled.
Saiya excels at ranged attacks, but he struggled to withstand a close-quarters assault from several people.
Seeing that things weren't going well for him, Lei found a way to break free from the encirclement and shielded Saiya behind him.
"What about Tata and Dale?"
"Seya asked."
“Tata is fast and won’t be caught by them. Dale should have escaped by now.”
"good."
Seymour can help defend against attacks from behind, but Ray can handle several opponents by himself, and even four hands might not be enough.
They were no match for Ray in terms of strength, but because they outnumbered him, Ray was constantly on the defensive. If the opponent intended to use a war of attrition, they could wear Ray down.
No, we can't just keep defending like this, we have to counterattack!
With his sword in his right hand, Lei quickly condensed an energy ball in his left palm and threw it at the enemy. The enemy dodged it but dared not attack again.
"Damn it, I was wondering why the two of them came over. Turns out he's a wood-type mage. Fifth Brother's information was inaccurate."
One of them spat as he cursed.
"Big brother, shall we continue?"
"Are we just going to wait to die if we don't continue? Let's go!"
Magic attacks are more effective than swords, and they are clearly wary of Ray.
Ray infused magic into the bone knife and launched a counterattack. A green crescent-shaped blade of light shot out in the direction of his swing, directly severing the enemy's hastily blocking steel knife and a tree as thick as two legs behind him.
As Lai fought, he became increasingly fierce, and the robbers were finding it difficult to keep up.
"Did you kill those five people a few days ago?"
Which five?
The man referred to as the "boss" spoke with malice in his words.
"Oh~ those five from a few days ago, those five from a few months ago, or those five from last spring. What? Are you related to one of them?"
He seemed to be trying to provoke Ray with his words, referring to those people's lives as nothing more than cabbages in a field.
“We’ve dealt with so many people, how could we remember five or ten?”
He laughed wildly, and several robbers joined in with malicious mockery after hearing his words. The flickering firelight shone on them, making them look like a group of demons just crawled out of hell, their faces contorted in a grotesque display.
"Ray, watch out!"
A silver blade flashed towards Lei Yi at a tricky angle, and he almost couldn't dodge it, his shirt was ripped open.
Lai felt a stinging pain in his shoulder. Looking down, he saw that he had been cut and there was a long, bloody gash on his shoulder.
"Pah, this kid actually dodged it."
The attacker retreated to the leader's side; the end of the knife in his hand had an elemental stone with a metallic sheen.
"Kid, you're lucky to be alive."
He scrutinized Lei with a look that was as if he were weighing an object, making Lei feel very uncomfortable.
"What's wrong, Third Brother? You've got your eye on this kid? I must say, he's quite good-looking."
The eldest brother joked, his smile quite lewd.
Feelings of annoyance and resistance rose in Lei's heart.
Regardless of gender, anyone facing the same scrutinizing gaze or some form of harassment will feel physically and psychologically uncomfortable. No matter where you are, there always seems to be some unprovoked malice.
"Ray, you're bleeding!"
Seyah was very worried when he saw that Lei was injured, fearing that his injury was serious.
"It's okay. Just take care of yourself later."
"Um!"
"Heh, kid, you're overthinking things. You'd better think about how to protect yourself. Go!"
One second the boss was laughing and talking, the next he was giving orders with a ferocious expression.
Several people rushed towards the two men, but Lei pushed Seya out of their encirclement.
After running out, Seya flipped and climbed onto the roof of the car, taking up a high point, and used his bow to support Laiyi.
These bandits have committed too many evil deeds; today, we absolutely must fight them to the death.
Lai was extremely focused on fighting them. The others were not a threat, only the eldest and third were stronger.
The bone knife clashed with the steel knife inlaid with elemental stones, and the green and silver light collided, producing a crisp clang.
Lei didn't know what kind of animal bone the bone knife Temuji gave him was made of, but it remained sturdy even when it clashed head-on with iron objects, without suffering any damage.
"Stop him, don't give him a chance to use magic."
"good!"
The bandits' attacks became increasingly intense, and Ray had no chance to use any other magical skills. The only thing he could use was the bone knife in his hand, which he had imbued with wood-type magical energy.
Seeing Lei Yi besieged on all sides, Seya was seething with hatred.
If his magic hadn't been sealed, how could he have left Ray alone down there to fight these villains?
"call out--"
This time, the sound of the arrow piercing the air was particularly loud, and Saiya used almost all his strength to draw the bow to its fullest extent.
"ah!"
Three wails came from around Lei.
One bow and three arrows!
With Saiya's help, three troublesome henchmen were dealt with in no time, instantly relieving much of his pressure.
Saiya drew his bow again, this time aiming at the boss who was full of trash talk.
He was running low on arrows. He only had twelve arrows left, three of which he had just used up, and five more in the previous battle. He had to use the last four in the most critical situation.
Besides that, all he had was a bone knife that Ray had lent him for self-defense, with an earth element stone embedded in the end. Ray had told him to take it out only in critical moments to save his life.
"You two go and kill him!"
The boss gave the order.
Ray stepped forward to stop them, but two more people walked out from the side and headed straight for Seya. By then, it was too late for Ray to stop them.
"Don't worry about me, I can handle it."
"Saya shouted."
Lai was constantly bothered by the eldest and third brothers, so he had to solve the immediate problem before helping Seya.
With five men gone, his pressure was greatly reduced, and his attacks became even more ferocious.
The situation has reversed again, with Lei basically dominating them and it's estimated that the battle will end soon.
"Put down your weapons!"
Lai thought he had misheard, and quickly glanced at the source of the sound, where he saw a familiar figure.
"I say, Lai and Seya, you two put down your weapons. Don't you want this little monster to live?"
The man walked from the shadows towards the campfire, his left hand gripping Tata's neck, his right hand holding a dagger firmly against Tata's throat. His smile was arrogant, a far cry from the honest man he had appeared to be these past few days.
"Daller!"
Saiya was the first to call out his name, his eyes practically spitting fire, his anger rising so intense that his hand holding the bow and arrow trembled with rage.
Dale completely betrayed Sayya's sympathy and trust.
Judging from his familiarity with the robbers, they were clearly in cahoots from the start. Perhaps to find out their background, or for some other reason, he orchestrated Dale's approach to them.
"Hahaha, Seya, thank you for taking care of me these past few days. I will give you a proper burial after you die. But now, please put down your bow and arrows. Do you hear me!"
Tata struggled desperately in Dale's hands, but his limbs and mouth were firmly bound, and all his struggles were in vain.
"What makes you think we'd give up the fight for an ordinary monster cub?"
Ray's eyes were cold.
Tata looked at Lai and Seya with a mixture of grievance and stubbornness. Especially after hearing Lai's words, the little monster wilted and became very sad.
"Given his extraordinary abilities, do you think I don't know he can talk? I'll count to three, and you'd better put it down right now!"
"one!"
"two!"
"three!"
"Hmm!"
Dale made a cut on Tata's right leg, and the bright red blood immediately stained the little monster's white fur, which was extremely glaring in the firelight.
"A light scratch will disfigure you and make you worthless."
The robber next to Dale reminded him, but after being glared at by him, he shut his mouth.
Lai threw the bone knife at his feet. With a clatter, Seya threw his bow and arrows onto the carriage as well.
"And storage pendants."
Lei pulled open his collar, ripped the pendant off his neck, and threw it at his feet.
"Okay, very good."
Dale looked very smug and was extremely arrogant.
"Now, both of you, raise your hands and come over to the campfire."
Seyah jumped off the roof and looked at Rae.
"hurry up!"
The two slowly walked to the campfire, and the bone knife and pendant behind them had already been quickly taken away by their men.
"Are you still fierce?"
The third brother approached and patted Lai Yi's face lightly, looking greasy and sleazy.
"Ugh! Ugh! Ugh!"
Ray! Ray!
The little monster could no longer hold back its tears, which fell in large drops.
He felt sorry for Ray, who was being humiliated like this because of him.
"Tie them up!"
After the leader gave the order, two men immediately stepped forward and tied up Lai and Seya. Only then did Dale release Tata from his grip and hand him over to his men.
The opportunity is now!
"Lian!"
As Ray finished speaking, mysterious black lines began to spread from his forehead, and these black lines could be faintly seen beneath the tattered fabric, as if they were alive.
Before they could react, all the ropes binding Ray snapped, and Tata was rescued and held in Ray's arms.
A small wisp of golden-green light condensed at Lei's fingertips, and as soon as it got close, it cut the ropes binding Tata and Seya.
"Impossible! Absolutely impossible! You're not human! You're a demon! You're a demon!"
Dale pointed at Lai and started spouting nonsense, but some of the quick-witted robbers, realizing the situation was turning bad, had already dropped their belongings and run away.
"Protect him."
Lai placed the little monster in Seya's arms, his eyes cold.
"I'll go take care of it."
"good."
Seya stared blankly at the human who was so different from before, while a golden light seemed to shimmer deep in the depths of Lei Yi's pupils.
Aren't you going to run?
Lei chuckled.
"Here I come."
