Chapter 22: The widow is really that little widow!
Director Zhao's words made the other three people at the table put down their chopsticks. Zhao Yunsheng looked at Wang Ying.
It's strange to say, Wang Ying and Zhao Yunsheng had not been together for long, but she immediately understood Zhao Yunsheng's eyes - he even minded her saying that she married him just to avoid going to the countryside.
Chen Xiuqin paused, saying, "Who knows how many more stories this will stir up."
"There's nothing we can do about it; this is the national policy," said Director Zhao.
"Eh? Old Zhao, doesn't the city have any explanation?" Chen Xiuqin said in a low voice.
"What's that?" Director Zhao also put down his chopsticks.
"Add some jobs or something." said Chen Xiuqin.
"It's easy for you to say, but it's not that easy." Director Zhao continued eating.
As Wang Ying listened to her parents-in-law's conversation, she wondered when she would finally have a job. The times were restrictive, and no matter how talented Wang Ying was, she couldn't escape the constraints of time and society.
After dinner, Wang Ying rushed to wash the dishes. While Wang Ying was doing so, Zhao Yunsheng was also busy, filling the stove with boiling water, replacing the coal briquettes, sealing the stove, and preparing water for washing...
After washing up, they went upstairs together.
After Wang Ying got into bed, she turned her back to Zhao Yunsheng and pretended to sleep. Zhao Yunsheng gently pushed her shoulder and said, "Are you asleep? Don't you want to listen to the poetry recitation?"
"I don't want to listen anymore." Wang Ying muttered.
"Tsk." Zhao Yunsheng withdrew his hand from Wang Ying's shoulder, lay down and sighed, "Alas, I must be the only one in the entire Beichong area who should thank the country's policy of sending people to the countryside."
Wang Ying didn't want to pay any attention to Zhao Yunsheng anymore after hearing his strange words, but even though she ignored him, he continued talking.
"If it weren't for this national policy, I would still be single right now... The country is so good to me..."
Wang Ying couldn't stand it any longer and turned to face Zhao Yunsheng: "Don't talk like if you don't marry me, you're going to be single for the rest of your life!"
Zhao Yunsheng chuckled and pulled Wang Ying into his arms: "Are you not pretending to sleep anymore?"
Wang Ying struggled for a while but couldn't break free, so he simply found a comfortable position and slept with Zhao Yunsheng in his arms.
"Why are you so corny?" Wang Ying asked. "Where did you learn that?"
"How could I?" Zhao Yunsheng hugged Wang Ying, and his hands began to move inappropriately.
"Speaking of which, your family is so well-off, why did you wait until now to get married?" Wang Ying asked the question she had been wanting to ask. As she asked this, she clearly felt Zhao Yunsheng's hand pause. Wang Ying continued, "Oh, there's a story."
"Yeah." Zhao Yunsheng admitted.
"Can you tell me about it?" Wang Ying said.
"No." Zhao Yunsheng said.
Wang Ying could tell that Zhao Yunsheng's tone was a bit stiff and cold, completely different from his usual self. Her hands also became more restrained, and the hand that was originally holding her tightly loosened a little.
"Oh, forget it." Wang Ying took advantage of Zhao Yunsheng's loosened grip and was about to turn over to sleep. Thinking that Zhao Yunsheng might still be worried, she decided not to ask further questions to avoid embarrassment and could ask again when she had the chance. As soon as she moved, Zhao Yunsheng's arms tightly clamped around her, and the two of them were pressed tightly together.
Zhao Yunsheng bit Wang Ying's ear hard, and Wang Ying cried out in pain.
"You are so carefree!" Zhao Yunsheng said in Wang Ying's ear.
"Ah?" Wang Ying didn't understand why Zhao Yunsheng suddenly started to tease her.
Zhao Yunsheng got even angrier after hearing Wang Ying's "Ah?". He didn't hold back and squeezed Wang Ying hard...
"It hurts, stop it!" Wang Ying begged for mercy.
"Hmph, I want you to feel pain. It's your fault for not caring about me." Zhao Yunsheng said harshly.
Wang Ying now understood why Zhao Yunsheng was bothering her. This guy was really… Wang Ying was afraid that she would suffer tonight, so she begged for mercy: "I care about you, please stop it."
Unfortunately, it was too late to beg for mercy now. Zhao Yunsheng turned over and pushed her down...
The next day, Wang Ying could barely get out of bed; her back was sore and her legs were weak. Fortunately, Zhao Yunsheng had gotten up early and prepared breakfast for the family. Only after breakfast was ready did he go upstairs and call Wang Ying.
After breakfast, everyone in the Zhao family went to work, leaving Wang Ying alone at home.
Wang Ying cleaned up the dishes, washed the clothes, and went back upstairs to knit a sweater while listening to the radio.
Without Zhao Yunsheng to disrupt and get in the way, Wang Ying knitted quickly and smoothly, finishing half of the front piece of Dongbao's sweater in just one morning.
At noon, Wang Ying was the only one eating at home. She did not treat herself badly. She cooked a bowl of noodles, beat an egg, added some vegetables, and ate the noodles and soup by herself.
One afternoon, Wang Ying had just finished knitting the front piece of the Dongbao sweater. This five-knit sweater is knitted in pieces.
Wang Ying calculated the time and thought Zhao Yunsheng and the others should be getting off work soon, so she went downstairs to prepare dinner for the family.
Wang Ying was busy in the kitchen. When dinner was almost ready, she heard the bicycle bell and Zhao Yunsheng calling her.
"Yingzi, I'm off work."
"Dinner will be ready soon." Wang Ying replied to Zhao Yunsheng in the kitchen. As soon as she finished speaking, Zhao Yunsheng had already arrived at the kitchen door.
Wang Ying looked up at him. Zhao Yunsheng walked over to her and asked, "You're home alone today. Did you miss me?"
"Let me think about it." Wang Ying said as he stir-fried the vegetables in the pot.
"Perfunctory!" Zhao Yunsheng snorted and went to wash his hands.
Zhao Yunsheng washed his hands without wiping the water off them. He walked over to Wang Ying and shot him in the face.
Wang Ying was so angry that she raised her spatula to hit him: "I was cooking, and you spilled water in the pot!"
Zhao Yunsheng chuckled: "How can I help you?"
"It's a good thing you don't make trouble." Wang Ying said unhappily. Is this man really twenty-six years old?
The couple was busy preparing dinner in the kitchen when they heard the sound of a bicycle bell outside and the voice of her mother-in-law Chen Xiuqin talking to a woman. Wang Ying was unfamiliar with the voice and couldn't tell who it was.
"It seems like there are guests at home, you can go and take a look." Wang Ying said to Zhao Yunsheng.
"I'm not going." Zhao Yunsheng took a plate and waited beside Wang Ying, ready to hand it to her after she finished cooking.
As they were discussing this, Chen Xiuqin came over and stood at the kitchen door and said, "Yingzi, there are more people eating tonight. Can we handle it all?"
"I'm afraid the rice isn't enough, so I'll cook some more noodles," said Wang Ying.
"Oh, don't bother Yunsheng's wife. I'll go back and eat later." The speaker was the woman who walked out from behind Chen Xiuqin. She spoke slowly and softly. She was thin and slender, with a melon-shaped face and long and narrow eyes. She was very feminine.
Wang Ying looked up at her and suddenly realized that this person was definitely the young widow Wang Hui had mentioned in her previous life. She just had this intuition. Wang Ying glanced at Zhao Yunsheng who was standing beside her. He was not looking at the door, but at the food in the pot.
Wang Ying deliberately nudged Zhao Yunsheng with her elbow. Zhao Yunsheng looked at her, and Wang Ying gestured to Zhao Yunsheng to introduce the guests.
At this time, Chen Xiuqin introduced: "Yingzi, this is your sister-in-law Yanfen. She is alone. She was reluctant to come on the day of your wedding, so she came to see you today."
Wow! It really is that young widow who has come to visit!
Wang Ying looked at her again and felt that she had a kind of gentleness and elegance, and should be the kind of woman that men would easily like.
"Sister-in-law Yanfen." Wang Ying called out generously without asking which relative this sister-in-law was from or which family her dead man belonged to.
"Yingzi, don't be busy. I'm not eating here. I just came to see you." Yanfen said.
"Don't talk nonsense. Eat first before you leave." Chen Xiuqin said, "Come on, let's go to the main room to talk." Chen Xiuqin said as she pulled Yanfen away.
After they had all left, Wang Yingcai asked Zhao Yunsheng, "Whose relative is this? What's her husband's surname?"
Zhao Yunsheng said, "They're not real relatives. Her father-in-law, Gao Cheng, and Director Zhao were comrades-in-arms. He's the deputy director of the paper mill. Her husband, Gao Weifeng, and I are also childhood friends."
"Oh~~~" Wang Ying stretched out the sound, put the dishes in the pot, changed the pot and prepared to put in the noodles.
"What are you saying?" Zhao Yunsheng said.
"It's nothing. Sister Yanfen doesn't look very old. How did her husband die?" Wang Ying asked.
"He was sick. He was three years older than me. He passed away two years ago."
"Any children?"
"No."
Wang Ying asked, Zhao Yunsheng answered. Wang Ying couldn't detect anything wrong with Zhao Yunsheng's tone, but perhaps because she had a preconceived notion, she felt that Zhao Yunsheng seemed reluctant to talk about Sister-in-law Yanfen and her husband. Wang Ying had already made up a story about her and Zhao Yunsheng in her mind.
"So is she living with her husband's family or her own family now?" Wang Ying asked again. Generally, women who are married but their husbands are gone and who don't have children will return to their parents' home and marry again later.
"She is still in her husband's family, and the Gao family has adopted her as their daughter," said Zhao Yunsheng.
"It's a pity that she becomes a widow at such a young age. She is quite pretty." Wang Ying poured hot water into the steel pot, took out half a handful of noodles from the cupboard, and stood by the stove waiting for the water to boil.
"Not as good-looking as you." Zhao Yunsheng said.
Wang Ying laughed: "Don't you feel guilty about saying that? She's prettier than me anyway."
"What have I done wrong? Don't you know that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder? You are just prettier than her." Zhao Yunsheng said.
The water in the steel pot boiled, and Wang Ying put the noodles in. Zhao Yunsheng took a pair of chopsticks in his hand at some point and reached into the pot to stir the noodles.
Wang Ying looked at Zhao Yunsheng. He was calm and composed, showing no trace of guilt. But she didn't quite understand where Zhao Yunsheng's affection for her came from. Perhaps a young man like Zhao Yunsheng was particularly sentimental? She couldn't tell whether he had anything going on with Sister-in-law Yanfen.
"Does Sister-in-law Yanfen often come to our house?" Wang Ying turned the subject back to the young widow, trying to test her again.
"It's OK. She and her mother both work at the Wujiaohua store. They used to come here often when Gao Weifeng was here, but they haven't been here much in the past two years." Zhao Yunsheng said as he picked up a noodle with his chopsticks and broke it. "It's ready."
Wang Ying didn't say anything else. The couple took the things to the main room. Director Zhao had returned from get off work at some point.
"I'm really sorry to trouble you." Yanfen stood up and said embarrassedly as soon as Wang Ying and others entered the main room.
"It's not a problem, please sit down, sister-in-law." Wang Ying said.
Yanfen stayed at Zhao's house for dinner. At the dinner table, Wang Ying paid attention to her and found that Yanfen glanced at Zhao Yunsheng several times, but Zhao Yunsheng was concentrating on eating and didn't even look at her.
