Chapter 8: Getting Married She is getting married tomorrow!
The day before National Day, Wang Ying and her sister's grandmother and uncle arrived from their county in Beichong City. The Wang family's relatives were all in the city, but they didn't visit much on weekdays. When they sent the letter, they said they would come on the day itself.
Wang Ying's grandmother was an old lady with bound feet and a bit of an odd personality. As soon as she sat down, she started complaining to Wang Ying's parents: "They married off both girls without even discussing it with us. It's not against the policy to keep one at home."
"Mom, the wedding day is tomorrow, why are you talking about this now?" Li Fengju was already regretting it in her heart, and she felt annoyed when her mother said that.
"I just think Huihui is too young, only eighteen. You raised her for eighteen years, and she didn't even bring home a penny, and she's already married off." Grandma added, "The same thing happened to Yingzi, she's been eating for free at home for twenty years, and she still has to pay for a dowry!"
"Mom, what are you talking about!" Even though Li Fengju was a little partial in her heart, she never thought of her two daughters eating free meals at home.
"Your stomach is useless. You can't even give birth to a son. Fortunately, your parents-in-law passed away early, otherwise you would have to eat three meals a day..." Grandma continued.
"Grandma!" Wang Ying couldn't stand it anymore and interrupted her.
Wang Yongren also said, "Mom, two daughters are great. Please don't say that. I haven't thought about having a son either." Of course Wang Yongren wanted a son, but it was impossible to think about it, so it was better not to think about it. Besides, nowadays, people say that having a boy or a girl is a man's business and has nothing to do with women...
After hearing what Wang Yongren said, Li Fengju began to wipe away her tears.
Wang Ying's uncle was an honest man. In Li Fengju's words, he was so honest that he couldn't even get a fart out of him. He just sat there with his head down, not saying a word or trying to persuade them.
"You're crying now, so I'll just say that since you've already decided...there's no point in me saying anything," said the old lady.
Li Fengju was busy wiping her tears. Wang Yongren didn't want to contradict his mother-in-law, so no one else said anything. Only Wang Ying said, "Grandma, you know it's settled, so don't say such things to upset Mom. And if you want her to have a son, do you want it this year or next year?"
The old lady wanted to say something, but when she met Wang Ying's eyes, she felt timid for some reason, as if she had seen the director of their county women's federation. The old lady was most afraid of this director, but she had always been strong-willed, so she muttered, "Little Ying, don't be so sharp-tongued. You're about to leave home and your in-laws will dislike you."
"If my husband's family dislikes me, I'll just divorce him and live with my uncle," said Wang Ying.
The old lady was dumbfounded for a moment, not knowing whether her granddaughter was telling the truth or not. Even Wang Ying's uncle looked at Wang Ying. He remembered that his niece was not a talkative person, so how could she be so talkative?
Li Fengju wiped her tears and glanced at Wang Ying. She never expected that her usually quiet daughter could speak up for her at a critical moment.
Wang Ying suddenly thought that Li Fengju was so partial to Wang Hui later because Wang Hui was unable to give birth to a child. She felt sorry for Wang Hui and could empathize with her more.
Wang Ying still remembers that after she gave birth to Du Yaozu in her previous life, her mother once said: Yingzi, you are lucky. Although the child came late, the first one is a boy. It doesn’t matter whether you have more children in the future.
She's lucky, so who's unlucky? Wang Ying felt that, according to her mother, it wasn't just Wang Hui, who couldn't have children, who was unlucky, but also herself, who couldn't have a son. Wang Ying never mentioned the hardships she'd endured in the Du family over the years because of her childlessness, as if having a son was a great blessing that could compensate for all her suffering.
And her mother often said: "We have two daughters, so we can treat them equally." The subtext of this sentence is that if one of them was a son, it would not be fair.
Wang Ying looked at her mother and then at her grandmother. Compared to her grandmother, her mother was already doing better. Wang Ying understood that this was the shackles and stigma of the times. However, fortunately, things would get better in the future.
With Wang Ying playing the villain, Wang Hui played the villain and said, "Oh, grandma, my elder sister and I will definitely be filial to you and mom in the future, don't worry. I'll take you to see my new clothes."
The old lady snorted and followed Wang Hui.
Wang Ying intellectually understood that her mother was limited by the times, but emotionally she didn't want to see her mother cry because she couldn't give birth to a son. She turned around to leave, but was stopped by Li Fengju.
"Yingzi."
"Hmm?" Wang Ying stopped.
Li Fengju wiped her tears and said, "Don't blame Mom."
"It's inexplicable. Why should I blame you?" Wang Ying said, "Is it because you didn't give me a brother?"
Li Fengju wanted to tell Wang Ying not to blame them for asking her to give in to Wang Hui for so many years and even talking to Wang Hui about the marriage they thought was a good choice. But after Wang Ying retorted, Li Fengju was speechless. She felt that Wang Ying must have blamed them in her heart, but she had never said it.
Oh, no, that's not right, she said it, she had been saying it all along, but she had never taken it seriously. Li Fengju didn't know what was wrong with her these days, she was just worried that Wang Ying would hold a grudge against her.
Seeing that Li Fengju didn't say anything, Wang Ying turned and left.
Wang Yongren wanted to call out to Wang Ying, but he didn't. He tried to persuade Li Fengju, "Come on, don't overthink it. Yingzi can't really ignore you. She won't. Don't sit here anymore. Look for anything you haven't prepared for tomorrow's meal. I'll go next door and borrow a table, chairs, pots and pans."
Wang Yongren was about to leave when Li Fengju stopped him and said, "Put some candy in your pocket. You're leaving empty-handed."
"Yes, yes, I was distracted for a moment." Wang Yongren returned to the room and filled both pockets of his jacket with fruit candies.
Li Fengju sat there for a few minutes before calling Wang Ying and her sister to help prepare the dishes for tomorrow's wedding banquet.
The three of them bustled back and forth between the kitchen and the main hall, while Wang Yongren kept moving tables and benches into the yard. Occasionally, a passing acquaintance would stop to offer a few polite words of blessing, and Li Fengju would give them a few candies.
Li Fengju went to talk to an acquaintance who passed by, leaving only the two sisters Wang Ying and Wang Hui in the kitchen peeling peanuts.
Wang Hui suddenly said, "Sister, we can't become estranged after getting married. We have to be good sisters like before."
"Were we good in the past?" Wang Ying said.
"Why is it not good? My elder sister is the best to me, I know it in my heart." Wang Hui said coquettishly.
"Really?" Wang Ying put a handful of peeled peanuts into the bowl.
"I was young and ignorant before, but I will definitely be nice to my elder sister in the future!" Wang Hui said seriously.
Wang Ying looked at Wang Hui. She felt that Wang Hui might really think so, but she also knew the premise behind Wang Hui's thinking. Didn't she just think that if she married Du Jianguo in this life, she would definitely replace her previous life?
"Then I'll see how you treat me well in the future." Wang Ying said.
"Hey, just wait." Wang Hui said, "Sister, let's sleep together tonight. It's been a long time since we slept together."
"The bed is too small. There's no room for me." Wang Yingcai didn't want to sleep with her.
Wang Hui thought about their bunk bed: "Yeah, it's too small. We've both grown up!"
However, Wang Ying felt that Wang Hui had not grown up. Even though she had lived two lives, she still had not grown up.
"Sister, if Zhao Yunsheng treats you badly, you must tell me and I will help you vent your anger!" Wang Hui said, just like her sister helped her in her previous life.
"If he treats me badly, I can vent my anger on my own. I don't need you." Wang Ying said, "Besides, how do you know he will treat me badly?"
"I'm just saying, he's a good guy." Wang Hui was afraid of letting the cat out of the bag, so she quickly changed her words.
"Well, why don't you get married?" Wang Ying said again.
"I just fell in love with Brother Jianguo!" said Wang Hui.
"You're quite strange. I think Zhao Yunsheng is better looking than Du Jianguo, and his family is better off. Why do you just ignore him? I can't understand it no matter how hard I try." Wang Ying said, "Don't regret it in the future."
"I will never regret it!" Wang Hui said with her chest puffed out.
"There's no use regretting it," Wang Ying said.
"Yes, there's no use regretting." Wang Hui said to herself, so she must live a good life after arriving at the Du family, better than her elder sister in her previous life!
As the sky gradually darkened, the Wang family had almost finished preparing for tomorrow's wedding banquet.
After dinner, Li Fengju came to the two sisters' room.
The mother and her two children all sat on Wang Hui's bed.
"Grandma is asleep?" Wang Hui asked.
"She sleeps. She goes to bed as soon as it gets dark," said Li Fengju.
"I really can't stand her. Mom, it's a good thing you're not like grandma!" Wang Hui said as she hugged Li Fengju's neck and rubbed her shoulders.
"You're going out tomorrow and you're still acting like a child." Li Fengju pushed Wang Hui but failed to push her away.
"Hehe, I will always be my mother's daughter!" Wang Hui hugged Li Fengju tightly.
Wang Ying looked at the two of them. She seemed to have never hugged her mother like this before. Maybe she had when she was a child, but she didn't remember it. She wasn't a sweet talker, she didn't act like a spoiled child, and she wasn't as lively as Wang Hui.
When Li Fengju met Wang Ying's eyes, she suddenly felt a little embarrassed and pushed Wang Hui away.
"Okay, okay, don't learn from your elder sister at all. Be more steady!" said Li Fengju.
Wang Hui straightened her back and saluted. "Okay! I'll definitely learn from you, big sister! And become a steady and good comrade!"
Li Fengju smiled and sighed, "Not a proper person."
Wang Ying looked at Wang Hui. She was over forty years old in her previous life, but now she was back in the body of an eighteen-year-old. She was still so lively and acted like a spoiled child. No wonder her parents liked her, and Du Jianguo and Du Yaozu also liked her.
Wang Hui hugged Wang Ying again. Wang Ying struggled but couldn't break free and was held tightly by Wang Hui. She could feel Wang Hui crying.
Why is she crying? Isn’t she going to marry the person she wants to marry and live the life she wants, Wang Ying said to herself.
"Sister, I'm sorry." Wang Hui cried and said in Wang Ying's ear.
Wang Ying was stunned for a moment. Was Wang Hui apologizing for her past life, or for this life? Otherwise, why did Wang Ying say that Wang Hui hadn't grown up yet? She thought that snatching her husband was like snatching a piece of candy or a piece of clothing, and that just saying sorry would be enough?
Wang Ying wouldn't forgive Wang Hui, but she inexplicably cried along with her. She suddenly remembered a past life where the two sisters had also cried and hugged each other before getting married. But in that past life, they had truly been reluctant to part with each other, a true sisterhood between them. Although they were crying now, their feelings were completely different from their past lives.
Seeing the two sisters crying and hugging each other, Li Fengju suddenly felt comforted. As long as the two sisters were not estranged, she also wiped away her tears and said, "Okay, stop crying, don't cry your eyes out, it won't look good tomorrow."
Only then did Wang Hui let go of Wang Ying and wiped her tears with a handkerchief.
"It's not far from here. In the future, whether it's between sisters or between me, we can visit each other more often," said Li Fengju.
Wang Hui sobbed and said, "I will definitely come back often. Mom, please don't find me annoying."
Wang Ying also wiped the tears from her face. Under her mother's gaze, she just nodded and said nothing more.
Li Fengju looked at her two daughters and thought about their childhood. The more she thought about it, the more reluctant she became. The more she thought about it, the more she regretted marrying them off. Tears kept flowing.
Wang Yongren came over and saw Li Fengju crying, her eyes a little hot, but he didn't cry in the end. He persuaded Li Fengju: "Okay, the girls are grown up, and they will get married sooner or later. It's not far away. Tell them to come home when they have nothing to do."
"You fathers don't understand a mother's feelings!" Li Fengju cried.
"Okay, okay, don't make them cry with you. It will look ugly if their eyes get swollen tomorrow." Wang Yongren came over and pulled Li Fengju back to the room.
As soon as Li Fengju left, Wang Ying climbed back to the upper bunk.
Wang Hui lay beside Wang Ying's bed and said, "Sister, we will all be fine."
Wang Ying hummed, turned over and faced inside, ignoring Wang Hui.
Wang Hui stared at Wang Ying's back for several seconds before she got back to bed. Soon, the sadness of leaving her parents was replaced by joy. She was getting married tomorrow, marrying Brother Jianguo. Her good days were about to begin!
