Chapter 66 Just Neighbors

After regaining some consciousness, she found a place to hide. There happened to be a car in front of her. She pulled on the car door and found that it could be opened, so she hid in the back seat.

After having a couple of drinks with his old friends, Zhao Qingyun decided to go home. He called a designated driver, and just as he was about to leave, the door opened.

He was just about to ask the designated driver what was going on, and why he hadn't locked the car doors, when he saw Xu Lai get in. He was a little surprised, "Xu Lai, what are you doing here?"

Xu Lai recognized Zhao Qingyun's voice and felt a little relieved. She then said, "I need your help. My ex-boyfriend... is looking for me. I've been drugged."

Zhao Qingyun looked down at her expression and, sure enough, something was wrong; she seemed disoriented.

Xu Lai glanced outside and saw that Liang Xuzhou had already come out. Not seeing her by the car door, she kicked the tire in anger.

"Could you take me away from here first? He's out." Xu Lai tugged at his sleeve.

Zhao Qingyun had a designated driver take him directly to the hospital. As soon as they arrived, he carried Xu Lai out of the car and took her to the emergency room. "Doctor, my friend accidentally drank something."

After a series of examinations, Xu Lai received an IV drip and fell into a deep sleep. Zhao Qingyun pinched the bridge of her nose and was just about to make a phone call when Xu Lai's cell phone rang.

Zhao Qingyun answered the phone and heard the other end ask, "Xiao Lai, when are you coming back?"

He glanced at the person on the hospital bed, and only said after walking to the door, "Hello, I'm her friend, she's in the hospital right now."

Xia Ning rushed over and guessed what was going on today. She never expected that Liang Xuzhou would dare to do something like drugging someone.

When she arrived, Zhao Qingyun was leaning back in his chair, pretending to doze off. Hearing the noise, he looked up and was immediately struck by his good looks. When did Xiao Lai meet such a handsome guy?

"Hello, I'm Xu Lai's best friend. You should go back and rest first. I'll stay here and watch over things."

Zhao Qingyun nodded, "Then I'll be going now. She needs to be observed for another night. I'll come to pick you up from the hospital tomorrow."

When Xu Lai woke up the next day, she felt perfectly normal and had no discomfort. Xia Ning bought her breakfast and teased her, "You were taking care of me the other day, and now it's the other way around."

Xu Lai was very fortunate that the amount of medicine in that glass of wine was not enough to make her lose consciousness, but only made her a little dizzy, otherwise Liang Xuzhou would have succeeded.

Xia Ning asked, "So how do you plan to handle this? Call the police?"

Xu Lai pondered for a moment and said, "We definitely have to call the police. Although he may have destroyed the evidence, the bar should still have surveillance cameras. We absolutely cannot let him get away with it."

Xia Ning agreed, saying, "This is the right thing to do; we must dare to defend our rights."

Xu Lai felt troubled thinking about those upsetting things. She covered her face, not wanting to face them.

Xia Ning held her hand and comforted her, "Let's not talk about these unhappy things."

She changed the subject, asking about the man from last night, and said somewhat sarcastically, "What's your relationship with that man from yesterday? He seemed very concerned about you."

Xu Lai knew she was referring to Zhao Qingyun, and explained, "We ran into him by chance. Luckily, he was there. He's Grandma Jiang's grandson next door, and also my neighbor."

Xia Ning is also from Shangxi Village, but she often lives in the city, leaving only her grandmother at her hometown.

She joked, "He seems like a typical domineering CEO. In the novels I've read, don't all these domineering CEOs have private doctors? He's actually quite normal; he brought you to the hospital."

Xu Lai couldn't help but laugh: "Stop teasing me, okay? You already said it's a novel."

Zhao Qingyun arrived at the hospital at 10 a.m., went to complete the discharge procedures first, and then went to the ward to find someone. That's when she heard those few words from the beginning.

Xu Lai had nothing to pack; she just needed to change her clothes and she could leave.

She thanked her, saying, "Thank you so much for last night. If it weren't for you, I might have already..."

Zhao Qingyun interrupted, "Alright, there's no need to be so polite between neighbors."

Xu Lai: ...I suspect you've been eavesdropping on our conversation.

On the way, Xu Lai and Xia Ning sat in the back seat in silence until Zhao Qingyun finally spoke up: "When are you going back?"

"My flight is tomorrow morning."

Zhao Qingyun asked, "Shall I take you there?"

Xu Lai remembered that he said he would stay for a week, and it was almost time, so she asked, "Aren't you going back?"

Zhao Qingyun tapped the steering wheel and said, "We need to take care of some things and stay for another two days."

After he got home last night, he asked someone to look up Liang Xuzhou for him. He found out that Liang Xuzhou had been fired a few months ago and that his family wasn't very wealthy; they owned a small factory.

Just then, their company was looking for suppliers, and the Liang family also sent someone to deliver the project proposal. Zhao Qingyun scoffed and said, "Tell Factory Director Liang to discipline his son first. Not just anyone can be offended."

He thought for a moment, then instructed, "Tell the companies that have partnerships with our company that they no longer need to consider the Liang family."

Liang Xuzhou was in a bad mood lately because someone had let him get away right under his nose. As a result, on his way home, someone covered his face, dragged him into an alley, beat him up, and threatened him: "Remember, you can't just touch anyone."

He returned home bruised and battered, and his father slapped him across the face, forcing him to kneel down. "I shouldn't have bought you that diploma in the first place. You have no ability of your own, and it's one thing to climb the social ladder by relying on women, but now you've offended the Zhao family. Our family is doomed."

...

Xu Lai reported the incident to the police as soon as she was discharged from the hospital. After giving her statement, the police said they would investigate carefully and asked her to keep her contact information accessible.

Xu Lai and Xia Ning returned to Heng County. Just past noon, they took a taxi to No. 1 Middle School and went to the snack street to eat.
